flu_photoThere is a lot of information out there about H1N1 flu but quite often we are getting info that is either out of date or inaccurate. Here is some info that WalMart pharmacies have been giving out. Hope this helps you to understand the fact from the fiction about H1N1

What is H1N1 flu?
H1N1 flu is a respiratory infection of pigs caused by type A influenza viruses. People can be infected with H1N1 flu. H1N1 flu can spread from pigs to people and from one person to another.

How is H1N1 flu spread?
It is thought that H1N1 flu spreads from person to person in a similar way to regular seasonal flu. Germs are released into the air through coughing and sneezing and the droplets enter the nose or throat of others. You may also become infected by touching something with the flu virus on it and then touching your eyes, nose or mouth, before washing your hands. Read the rest of this entry »

marijuanaBack many years ago I drank too much and I smoked marijuana. Those days are far behind me now but I was always intrigued with and remain intrigued by the health affects as well as the drawbacks of marijuana use and mental health.

As anyone that has used marijuana can tell you the mental effects are very intense and for anyone that has lived with a marijuana user can tell you the effects can also lead to laziness and a lack of motivation.

But what about psychosis? Will marijuana permanently affect your brain for the worse? Read the rest of this entry »

hipAs we all get older we fight with aches and pains but for many people the biggest problem is hip pain. As you may be aware hip replacements are one of the top surgeries for people in their 30s and 40s even though we associate people that are much older with hip replacement surgery.

So what are the causes and treatments for hip problems and hip pain?

Hip pain can be a sign of many medical conditions. Some disorders, such as arthritis could, in time, require a hip replacement. But others, such as bursitis, can be managed with much less invasive treatment options. Exercise may help in some situations, but not all. Of course I would suggest going to your doctor instead of self diagnosing as the hip is a complex joint.

Hip pain  may be a sign of a problem with the muscles, ligaments, tendons or other structures that support the joint. To diagnose the cause of your hip pain, your doctor will likely do a physical exam followed by an X-ray of the hip. In some cases, another imaging exam, such as an MRI, may be necessary, depending on your condition. For most people, the exam and imaging test is all that’s needed to uncover the cause of hip pain. running-breast-cancer-risk-reductionA recent study from the journal called BMC Cancer shows  that in age-adjusted and BMI adjusted models,  anything more than 7 hours per week of moderate-to-vigorous activity during the past 10 years was associated with 16% reduced risk of postmenopausal breast cancer  compared with inactivity. Neither moderate-to-vigorous intensity activity during other periods of life nor light intensity activity during any period of life was related to breast cancer risk, and associations did not vary by tumor characteristics.

This is very interesting because we look at exercise in two ways. What we did this week and what we have done in our whole life. This study shows that the last 10 years are critical in looking at the help that good exercise does in lowering breast cancer risk. Read the rest of this entry »

flu-vaccineI have been getting flu shots for years now and I would have to guess that I do not get the flu becasue I am getting the shot but this year I am not so sure. Crazy paranoid maybe but we will see ovr the next few weeks what happens.

First of all the annual flu shot is a bit of a crapshoot. last spring or maybe even eealier there is a group of researchers that would have gotten together and decided what their best guess was for the strains of flu that would pop up this winter. Usually these researchers do well and often they still get it wrong.

I am not sure what the side effects of the flu shot really are for me and for everyone they will be different but what I do know if that I have not had more than a 24 hour bug over the last few years and I am never sure if this is good or not. Does this mean I may be more susceptible to other illnesses? I saw a report last week saying that people that got the flu shot last year are twice as likely this year to get H1N1 flu. new-momsI know that when my wife gave birth to each of our kids that it was not too obvious as to what she should be doing next to get into shape. Sure if you read around you can find some info easily enough but I just ran across a program that a lasy has started to help new mothers get together and get new mothers into better shape after pregnancy

Amanda Russell  takes fitness in stride. Literally.  Russell,  mother of a 1-year-old  son, runs a workout program  for moms called Stroller Strides.

A franchise, Stroller Strides, is a  60-minute class that focuses on  cardiovascular activities and  muscle-strengthening exercises using  resistance bands, body weight and  strollers. Moms are able to interact with  their babies throughout their workout.

“Stroller Strides is not only an amazing  workout, but a great social outlet for  myself and my daughter,” said Danielle  Rousayne of Pembroke, mother of a  20-month-old daughter. “I did not have  many friends in the area with children,  and these women have become some of  my best friends. I love that my daughter  can play with other kids.”

This is a great thing. Look around your community if you are a new mom and see if you can find a program like this as well to do more than sit and meet new moms but instead move while you are meeting with other new moms.

Knowing how to test for diabetes can put your mind at rest if you are worried about your blood sugar levels. A basic test can be done at home, but if you have any reason to think that you may be at risk of developing diabetes you should discuss this with a medical professional.

Diabetes is a disease in which the levels of glucose in the blood rise above normal because the body’s usual regulatory mechanism, involving insulin, is not working correctly. This may be because the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin have been damaged or destroyed by an auto immune response (type 1 diabetes) or because the body has become resistant to insulin and the pancreas cannot keep up with the demand (type 2 diabetes). Keeping to a gestational diabetes diet plan is very important if you have been diagnosed with diabetes during pregnancy. It is vital to your own health as well as the health of the baby that your blood sugar levels are managed and controlled during your pregnancy.

Gestational diabetes is diagnosed when women who have not been diabetic before develop diabetes during pregnancy. Most pregnant women are tested for it as a matter of routine. It happens because the needs of the baby for glucose, which provides energy, interfere with the body’s normal insulin-based regulatory mechanism.

If you maintain close contact with your health care provider during your pregnancy and take any medications that they prescribe as well as following the gestational diabetes diet plan that they will help you to formulate, there is every chance that you will have a normal birth with a healthy baby. The diabetes often goes away when the baby is born. Read the rest of this entry »

Anybody following a type 2 diabetes diet will know that ‘brown’ foods like whole grains and whole wheat bread and pasta are recommended instead of the white varieties, but did you know why? Did you know that there is something you can do to make them more potent? And did you know that there is one very special whole grain that recent research suggests may actually reduce the damage to blood vessels caused by diabetes, so reducing the risk of serious complications such as strokes and heart problems?

Why Grains Should Be Whole In A Type 2 Diabetes Diet

Whole grains including whole wheat products should always be selected over white because they are unrefined and so contain the natural fiber that is removed from white wheat, rice and other grains. Grains contain a high amount of carbohydrate and in white grain products, this is very quickly digested and converted to glucose in the body, which can cause an increase in your blood sugar levels. It is important for parents to be aware of the symptoms of diabetes in children. Over 90% of children with diabetes have type 1, which results from the auto immune destruction of the cells in the pancreas that produces insulin, the essential hormone that regulates blood glucose levels. Type 1 has no connection with being overweight and can come on suddenly in otherwise healthy and active children.

A tendency to develop childhood diabetes is thought to be inherited, but the disease is not triggered in everybody who carries the gene, so you may be unaware that this genetic factor exists in your family. Of course if you know that there is diabetes in your family or your spouse’s family, then you should be particularly conscious of the symptoms of diabetes in children in relation to your own kids. But most of the children diagnosed with diabetes do not have any close family members who have the disease. Read the rest of this entry »
