I don’t know why I feel like commenting on this story but there is a Reuters story today that 8 glasses of water a day is not needed to be any healthier.

Strange, I read through the article and they seem to say that only athletes and people with some diseases need extra water and that the kidneys clean our blood anyway so no extra water is needed.

Well if that is true then:

Why do I feel better after I drink some water?

Why did my stomach problems subside yesterday when I drank that water?

Why does my skin seem to clear up when I  drink more water?

Why do I have more energy when I drink more water?

Strange that the writers of newspapers always seem to try to jump on reports that we don’t need to drink more water but in my own personal experience I always feel better from drinking more water. People always seem really smug when saying that you don’t need to drink water, why is that?

I will drink a glass of water right now and think about it.

I saw the same story reported in our local free rag. I don’t think reporting such things does anything to guide people toward a healthy lifestyle. Chances are that if you DON’T drink water, instead you are drinking softdrink, too many coffees, or too much juice. I definitely feel better when I drink water.
I’ve known of plenty of people to get dehydrated and tired from drinking enough water – I’ve never known anyone to drink so much water they flushed all their electrolytes out (it is possible of course). So drink enough water everyone! :)

Most people do not drink enough water, and many mistake thirst for hunger and end up consuming extra calories. That concept was not disputed in the above mentioned literature review. People live life on the run, and don’t stay hydrated or eat a balanced diet. I love vitaminwater because it hydrates and helps enhance my diet with added B vitamins and vitamin C. At only 50 calories per serving, I can stay hydrated and save on calories that I otherwise would have eaten. So maybe water intake over and above our needs won’t bring onb a miracle, but getting enough to meet our daily needs is a good start.
