Eating Increases have Caused Fat Problems

I just found a reference to a report on Science Daily showing that obesity problems in North America can be directly attributed to overeating.

The study originated in Europe and included almost 2400 people as well as using stats on the amount of food grown as well as imported.

Here is a bit of a quote:

New research that uses an innovative approach to study, for the first time, the relative contributions of food and exercise habits to the development of the obesity epidemic has concluded that the rise in obesity in the United States since the 1970s was virtually all due to increased energy intake.

As much as we like to point fingers at a host of different causes of obesity, it seems that eating more calories is the number one culprit.

How much of the obesity epidemic has been caused by excess calorie intake and how much by reductions in physical activity has been long debated and while experts agree that making it easier for people to eat less and exercise more are both important for combating it, they debate where the public health focus should be.

A study presented on Friday at the European Congress on Obesity is the first to examine the question of the proportional contributions to the obesity epidemic by combining metabolic relationships, the laws of thermodynamics, epidemiological data and agricultural data.

So if we are to agree that eating causes obesity then it should be simply a case that if you decrease eating then you should lose that extra weight right? Well i am not so sure.

The fact is that even though this study may show that the leading cause of obesity is greater food intake, which I agree with. The move from an agrarian society to a more urban lifestyle over the last 50 or so years I am sure would contribute. Many people do not walk or exercise more than getting to the car and then getting to the office.
