Many workplaces are taking exercise and health more seriously. There is a couple of great reasons for this. First, a healthy employee is going to be sick less and will be more productive. secondly, it is great to have a work gym so that you can help to get and keep employees with a feature that is different then many other workplaces have.

Northrop Grumman is a big defence contractor and has many employees and a ship building station in Mississippi that employees by iteslf 12,000 employees. So Northrop Grumman spent 250,000 dollars building a fitness center that will be the awe of all who think that a corporate fitness center is always dark, dingy and old. This sounds really nice and even the VP of the company works out there.

Irwin F. Edenzon, vice president and general manager of Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding–Gulf Coast, starts his day at the new gym around 3:45 a.m. and said the new fitness center is all about promoting healthy workers.

“The new fitness center is an example of the company’s commitment to the health and well-being of our employees,” said Edenzon.

“We want healthy employees because our shipbuilders have jobs that require physical labor and can involve strains and sprains. We have always been robust in our safety programs but wanted to offer this center for our employees so they can have the opportunity to improve their own physical condition day by day.”

The facility is available to all 12,000 Northrop Grumman employees for a $10 a month payroll deduction.

The new facility features strength training machines, free weights, cardio equipment, basketball and racquetball courts, personalized exercise programs, group exercise classes, fitness incentive programs, fitness assessments and locker rooms with showers.

This is more than most companies can afford to pay but if you can get just 10% of the employees to join up then the initial cost would be directly paid for in less than two years and this is not even including all the great benefits of a healthier and happier workforce.
