I had not heard of this until today but a few years ago there was a diet created by General Motors called the GM Diet to get or at least keep the employees in shape (to bad it didn’t help the bottom line) and this diet was really popular even outside of General Motors.

The GM Diet is one of those older diets that seems to be based on heresay and fads more than anything and you can see this in the strange ideas about drinking certain alcohols and the idea of eating until you are “stuffed” can not be at all good over the long term. Also funny is an all meat day as opposed to the fat loss 4 idiots all fruit day.

The GM Diet was originally created by GM and only for the employees and families. Somehow GM (biggest company in the world at the time) got a grant from the FDA and the Department of Agriculture to create this. Johns Hopkins was involved and the diet was approved and launched in 1985.

This GM Diet program is designed for a target weight loss of 10-17 lbs per week. It will also improve your attitudes and emotions because of its cleansing systematic effects.

This can also be used over and over again although I am not to sure about the food balance as it seems to be extreme in a few ways. The GM Diet is designed to flush your system of impurities and give you a feeling of well being. The plan is designed to lose you 10 pounds or so in a week. Has anyone tried and found this?

GM Diet Plan

During the first seven days you must abstain from all alcohol. You must drink 10 glasses of water each day on the GM Diet

Day One All fruits except bananas. Your first day will consist of all the fruits you want. It is strongly suggested that you consume lots of melons the first day. Especially watermelon and a loupe. If you limit your fruit consumption to melons, your chances of losing three lbs. on first day are very good.


Day Two
All vegetables. You are encouraged to eat until you are stuffed with all the raw or cooked vegetables of your choice. There is no limit on the amount or type. For your complex carbohydrate, you will start day two with a large baked potato for breakfast. You may top the potato with one pat of butter.

Day Three A mixture of fruits and vegetables of your choice. Any amount, any quantity. No bananas yet. No potatoes today.

Day Four Bananas and milk. Today you will eat as many as eight bananas and drink three glasses of milk. This will be combined with the special soup which may be eaten in limited quantities.

Day Five Today is feast day. You will eat beef and tomatoes. Eat two 10 oz. portions of lean beef. Hamburger is OK. Combine this with six whole tomatoes. On day five you must increase your water intake by one quart. This is to cleanse your system of the uric acid you will be producing.

Day Six Beef and vegetables. Today you may eat an unlimited amount of beef and vegetables. Eat to your hearts content.

Day Seven Today your food intake will consist of brown rice, fruit juices and all the vegetables you care to consume.

Tomorrow morning from the GM Diet you will be 10-17 lbs. lighter than one week ago. If you desire further weight loss, repeat the program again. You may repeat this program as often as you like, however, it is suggested that you are allowed two glasses of white wine in addition to the instructions on the program. You may substitute champagne for white wine. Under no circumstances are you to drink any other alcoholic beverages with the exception of beer which is allowed. Any liquor (bourbon,vodka, rum) is forbidden.

Cream drinks are especially forbidden on the GM Diet. You may have an occasional cordial such as creme de menthe or schnapps, but you must always limit yourself to two drinks.

If you wine, drink only wine that day. If you have beer, drink only beer that day, etc. Alcohol adds empty calories to your diet. However, after the first week on the GM Diet it will help your digestion and settle your stomach.

GM Wonder Soup

The following soup is intended as a supplement to your GM Diet. It can be eaten any time of the day in virtually unlimited quantities. You are encouraged to consume large quantities of this soup.

28 oz, Water, 6 Large Onions, 2 Green Peppers, Whole Tomatoes (fresh or canned), 1 Head Cabbage, 1 Bunch Celery, 4 Envelopes Lipton Onion Soup Mix, Herbs and Flavoring as desired.

GM Diet Additional Notes

Vegetables as may be taken in the form of a salad if desired. No dressing except malt, white or wine vinegar, squeezed lemon, garlic, herbs. No more than one tea spoon of oil on the GM Diet.

You have above a recipe for the wonder soup which can be eaten in unlimited quantities. This soup is a supplement while you are on the program and it should be a pleasure to eat. Not everyone likes cabbage, green peppers, celery etc. This recipe is not inflexible. You may substitute vegetables according to your taste. You may add any vegetables you like: asparagus, peas, corn, turnips, green beans, cauliflower, etc. Try to stay away from beans (lima, pinto, kidney, etc.), however, because they tend to be high in calories even though they are very good for you.

Beverages you may consume while on the GM Diet program :

1. Water (flavored with lemon/lime if desired).
2. Club Soda is OK.
3. Black Coffee. No cream or cream substitute. No sugar or sweetness.
4. Black Tea = Herb or Leaf.
5. Absolutely nothing else except the fruit juices which are part of day seven. No fruit juices before day seven.

How and Why the GM Diet Works

Day One – You are preparing your system for the upcoming program. Your only source of nutrition is fresh or canned fruits. Fruits are nature’s perfect food. They provide everything you could possibly want to sustain life except total balance and variety.

Day Two – Starts with a fix of complex carbohydrates coupled with an oil dose. This is taken in the morning for energy and balance. The rest of day two consists of vegetables which are virtually calorie free and provide essential nutrients and fibre.

Day Three – Eliminates the potato because you get your carbohydrates from the fruits. You system is now prepared to start burning excess pounds. You will still have cravings which should start to diminish by day four.

Day Four – Bananas, milk and soup sound the strangest and least desirable. You’re in for a surprise. You probably will not eat all the bananas allowed. But they are there for the potassium you have lost and the sodium you may have missed the past three days. You will notice a definite weight loss of desire for sweets. You will be surprised how easy this day will go.

Day Five – Beef and tomatoes. The beef is for iron and proteins, the tomatoes are for digestion and fibre. Lots and lots of water purifies your system. You should notice colorless urine today. Your allowance calls for the equivalent of five “quarter ponders”. Do not feel you have to eat all this beef. You must eat the six tomatoes.

Day Six – Similar to day five, Iron and proteins from beef, Vitamins and fibre from vegetables. By now your system is in a total weight loss inclination. There should be a noticeable difference in the way you look today, compared to day one.

Day Seven – Finished off the program like a good cigar used to finish off Victorian meals, except much healthier. You have your system under control and it should thank you for the flushing and cleaning you just gave it.

I am not sure of the value of the GM Diet but go ahead and try this and see if you are pleasantly surprised. Make sure that if you try this that you also let us all know of the results good or bad in the comments below. Maybe GM Diet will me the legacy that General Motors will be remembered for instead?

  1. My mother did this diet last week, and by the third day she had already lost six pounds, and that was without exercising at all. I was amazed! I am definitely going to do this diet, but I will exercise everyday so I hope that will help me lose even more

  2. I started the GM diet yesterday, and i ate a banana for breakfast without realising you weren’t meant to, i carried the day on with just fruits except bananas but i’m unsure if i have messed up the diet and should start again on go on to day 2?

      I would start the diet all over again (give it a couple days break). The reason is because of personal experience, on first day I drank fruit juice and I guess we were not supposed to drink it till the end. I didnt get the expected results, yet i continued doing the diet till the end and was very disappointed. The next time I did the diet again and followed it exactly I lost 4 pounds (net) within the first day.

      So I have to say follow the diet, if you made a mistake then re start it because you might get disappointed at the end.

      So here is my analysis on how the diet program works. Pretty much the first 4 days is when you do actually prepare your body to loose and the last three days are more like trying to get you back on track with normal food diet just so your body does not get shocked with different food variety. Considering that my analysis is correct here is what I am planning to do:
      Cut down the diet to like three days or so:
      Day 1: Fruits (all kinds except banana and mango)
      Day 2: Mix of vegetables (coocked and raw except potato) + Fruits (all kinds except banana and mango)
      Day 3: Banana + milk (I will drink at least one banana shake for dinner no sugar)

      Let me try and implement this plan within this week and will let you know my results.

      Another pointer is that keep your work out routine pretty much light and same during the diet and post-diet, because I started seeing more curves in mepost-diet as I was working out. I dont do too much just some very light run and some pushups (you tube the work out sessions that suits you best). And drink 2 liters of water at the bare minimum.

    I have started this diet on last monday..and today is my third day…I am following the instructions as it is..but still haven’t loss single pound….is there anyelse I can do..I am totally disappointed..

      i had the same problem but hang in there and wait till your 4th day. when you have to eat bananas all day. what i did on the 4th day for dinner was i had a banana shake (without sugar) and then like an hour later wonder soup. the next day i was 5 pounds lighter. try that..and let me know what the results are 🙂

      1. @Vasavi: not eating anything throughout the day is not what this diet is all about. on 4th day remember you had to eat 8 bananas and 3 glasses of milk. i could only get upto 6 + 3 glasses of milk + one bowl of wonder soup. and for day 1-3 i had:

        Day 1: lots of loupe + lots of melons + 2 apples + 2 liters of water
        Day 2: boiled potato with a small pat of butter + salad + carrots + boiled veggies with spice (peas + green beans + green chilies + carrots + spices – black pepper, salt etc.) + 2 liters of water
        Day 3: lots of loupe + boiled veggies + 2 apples + boiled veggies + 2 liters of water

    please help me with my questions:

    1.i am on my 2nd day of the diet but dint have any wonder soup yet does it make any difference if i dont have the soup at all
    2.i am allergic to tomatoes please let me know if there is any substitute

    My work colleague and I are starting the GM diet tomorrow, we intend to go through with it strictly and not loose focus. Any advice that can help us while we start will be appreciated.

      I am on day 5 of the GM diet…..and has lost 5 pounds so far. Not sure whether I will lose more , It was hard on the first day around lunch hour, but was able to pull through. I tried a weird way..than running away from the food , I tried cooking food for my family ….( There is a saying that goes…if u have anything plentiful, u dont realise the value of it) So I tried this trick, n didnt feel much of cravings:)

  6. Day 4:

    I have been following this diet very carefully but haven’t lost a single pound yet. Although I feel a lot lighter and yes I don’t have many cravings today and my system does not desire sweets I guess. But my scale does not seem to change.

    Here is what I have done so far:
    Day 1: lots of loupe + lots of melons + 2 apples + 2 liters of water
    Day 2: boiled potato with a small pat of butter + salad + carrots + boiled veggies with spice (peas + green beans + green chilies + carrots + spices – black pepper, salt etc.) + 2 liters of water
    Day 3: lots of loupe + boiled veggies + 2 apples + boiled veggies + 2 liters of water
    Day 4: so far I had 3 bananas + a glass of milk (no sugar) + a liter and half of water + wonder soup. It is 3:30 in the afternoon and I am ready to go for another glass of milk plus a banana.
    please advice if i am doing something wrong..any suggestions will help!

    1. So Day 4 went off pretty well, i had 2 bananas + 2 glass of milk + one bowl of wonder soup. The day went pretty fine, except I started feeling symptoms of diarrhea. Granted I had a terrible night, but in the morning I WAS 5 POUNDS LIGHTER than day 1. I felt very satisfied and now very exicited to see thru the rest of 3 days. So far on my Day 5 I had rice+tomatoe currey and about a liter of water for breakfast. Lets see how my day goes through!
      YEY! I feel full of energy, I rarely had these wide awake mornings, thanks to this diet!

      2. hey guys sorry for the delayed response..so i completed the diet with not much of loss as i expected but i am not that dissapointed because i really feel energetic and it does feel that my system is all clean and i am less tired now…so really thanks to GM diet.
        I am starting another session starting this thursday/friday in full force, this time i am planning to avoid lot of salt and add daily workout in my routine. i am planning to post my progress by day here..it just keeps me motivated.
        so keeping fingers crossed that this time i will loose enough ..
        please post your response guys and new ideas are most appreciated 🙂

      YOU HAVE NOT LOST TOO MUCH . U SHUD ALSO HAVE MILD EXERCISE/WALKING/JOGGIND FOR ATLEAST 30 MIN DAILY FOR BEST RESULTS .
      REMEMBER , DON’T TAKE TOO MUCH SALT AS SALT INCREASES THE BODY WATER ABSORBTION ABILITY WHICH AGAIN INCREASES WEIGHT .

      1. Yeah Ajay I agree I have been using quite a bit of salt in my food. I couldn’t do without it the first day. Until the second day afternoon I had no salt and I felt that I am going to collapse, which is why at night I had the veggies with some salt and spices in it (no oil).

        I also couldn’t go out for work out because until the third day I was very tired of not eating and then my work got in the way, so couldn’t go for work outs. But I was planning to start from tomorrow considering there will be a whole lot that I can gain when I am done with the diet. So will keep that in mind.

        I hope I will still see some more loss, as I still have three more days to go?

        Suggesions?

    i am on second day of this diet. so far the first day was terrible i still have headache from yesterday. the second day i am supposed to consume all veges, well i am unable to consume boiled vegetables, can i cook them? i wont include oil in it, but can i put salt and pepper in my veges? i really need salt and i dont know if i can use salt in this diet at all??
    please provide answers asap! i have already started my second day and i really want to see myself go thru all 7 days.

    Started the GM yesterday. Would just like to ask a few questions:

    1) On day4 can I add the milk to my coffee with artificial sweetner?
    2) Am I allowed to eat minced/ground beef instead of fillet etc on day 5?
    3) Can I eat Avocados?

  9. It works without a doubt. I lost 4lbs the first day right off, and progressed to a loss of 11 lbs by the last day. I feel great and at no time are you ever with a hungry feeling. I will repeat this for 3 weeks as I would like to lose another 20 lbs.

    So I Did the GM Diet this Past week and WOW was i impressed, first day lost 5 pounds i stuck to the melons for a greater result.

    second days i lost 4 pounds day 2 was much easier then day 1 lol.

    I skipped day 3 since i lost alot of , and did day 4, losing 2 more pounds.

    Day 5 was a body buzz with all the meat and tomatos but definatly delish 🙂 and down 1 more pound.

    4 days of the diet with excersize and i am down 12 pounds and holding 🙂 very happy with the results, didnt feel like i needed any more off so i am now just maintaining my as is … start 150pounds- finsihed at 138 pounds.

    Great Diet/Cleanse – talk about spring cleaning ….. CHEERS!!! 🙂

  12. hi i done diet last week lost amazing 9 pounds thinking of repeating on monday which leaves me with four day break in between will my loss slow down second time round or does any one no any tips for high loss again i go the gym and zumba dance twice a week but i am currently still 14st 9lb so would like to be lighter for summer 🙂
