Often when people want to lose weight they will simply think about losing weight instead of actually doing the hard part which is the doing of the weight loss.

The doing of the weight loss is actually two different things. Deciding how much weight and when you want to lose it is the first part to weight loss , and the second part would be developing the plan to lose the weight.

Make it your priority today to lose weight. You are not going to lose any weight today which means that you will need to plan what you will do over the next weeks and months to lose 2 pounds a week, which is a good ambition although definitely doable. Here is exactly how to get that weight loss started.

1.       Figure out why you want to lose the weight – Is it to be healthier? To impress someone? To fit into old clothes? It does not matter why as long as the reason is important to you.

2.       Figure out when you want to lose the weight by, give it a date – Next Christmas just is not good enough as it is too far out. Better to get a shorter term goal that you can attain. A good rule of thumb is 8 pounds per month or 25 pounds in three months

3.       Decide what is will take to lose the weight – Change in exercise patterns? A new eating style? Cutting out the morning Latte? Do a bit or research so that you are doing the right things at the right time to lose the weight and make that goal attainable.

4.       How will you celebrate your weight loss goal – Are you going to treat yourself to new clothes? Are you going to go on a vacation? Are you going to get glamour shots taken by a pro photographer? Whatever is important to you is the celebration that you will decide.

This may seem simple but if you follow this four step plan you will have a much easier time losing the weight that you want to lose and you will go from wishing  that you could lose the weight to actually doing the losing of the weight.

    1. Excellent article! Motivation is so important – but getting out there and doing it is so much MORE important! Nike says it all… ‘just do it’. I’ve always said that its really important to set attainable goals… not too hard nor too easy. So just beyond what you think you’re capable of. Its going to take a few times before you realise what you’re capable of – but if you set your mind to it, you can achieve anything. It really is all in the mind. If you really want it, you’ll be doingyour best to get it!
      Great stuff here.

    2. Those are great tips Bill. I especially like the first one. Find a “why” you want to do it. Without defining the why, you will really be lost over the course of the process and really have a tough time finding your way.

The other advice is to be realistic. Too many people I talk to want to accomplish too much too fast. While it is great to be ambitious, setting the bar too high can lead to frustration.

As long as your reward doesn’t include binging on food you haven’t been allowing yourself to eat! People have a bad habit of doing that =(
