I remember when I was younger and I never did cardio. I would go into the gym and do weights Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and just do weights on a 2 on one off schedule. I would do chest, shoulders, and triceps one day and back, biceps and legs the second day. And again I did no cardio. I did so little cardio that there was a woman bodybuilder in the gym that we would talk to and she said that she did 2 hours of cardio a day. I was shocked that this was even possible for someone that lifted weights to do. times for me have changed a bit. Now I do three sets per muscle group three times a week so my workouts are only around 45 minutes or so and I do get cardio on my mountain bike or indoors on the elliptical trainer. I believe that now my workouts are much more focussed and I listen to my body more so that I do not risk overtraining like I really did back then. What can TV teach us about workouts? So now when I watch the Biggest Loser I just have to cringe. These guys are really kicking it into high gear and working damn hard for apparently four hours a day. I have a lingering questions and that is about recovery time. Every season of the Biggest Loser we see someone have some kind of joint or bone problem but it appears that whatever the trainers Bob and Fillian are doing seems to work really well because carrying all of that weight and doing lots of exercise is going to cripple even an athlete let alone a recently reformed couch potato. So how long do we have to take to recover anyway?I have always looked at two days of recovery for weights and 24 hours for hard cardio but this is only when you do not overtrain with weights in the first place. Somehow most of the people persevere but I wonder what they do for muscle recovery, cardio is one thing but the strength training is something else altogether. I sometimes think that there should be a warning on at the beginning of the Biggest Loser. Something like
I like what they do on the Biggest Loser show, not just for changing peoples lives on TV, but also to open the eyes of people who want to get in shape to see just how resilient a human body can be. Most people can not just lose 10 pounds a week at home but even losing a couple of pounds week in an week out is going to get a lot of people out of real trouble that they have gotten themselves into. How hard can you push yourself while exercisingThe key to any change like the ones that we see on TV is to make sure that we are integrating the change in our lives and especially that we do not have limits. A few years ago I had a crazy idea that I could ride 45 minutes to work. Now I ride to work most days. Even longer ago I thought that doing more than 30 minutes of cardio more than twice a week would hurt my knees now I know that any length of cardio is possible. If you couple an ideal lifestyle with what you need to do and you just implement changes to how you live life you can create a different future for yourself. You can do anything. Looking to make a change and lose some weight? I have reviewed the top diet on the internet and you can go and read over 200 comments people have made about why this diet has worked well for them, as well as some of the problems. This was a funny meandering. Perhaps you could read a textbook on physiology and anatomy and learn about muscular action’s relationship with metabolism. We are all active all the time; it’s simply a matter of intensity and how long our metabolism can provide for that intensity. Just as you know weight training is a greater intensity than aerobics, and lactic acid threshold is what makes you stop your set in weight training (unless you let your mind, instead of your body, tell you to quit), as well as what makes you stop your session of cardio. Technically, if the body is trained up to it, you could do cardio eight to sixteen hours a day. How do you think these people work on farms and in factories that long? As far as The Biggest Loser, I think people are really buying entirely too much into the red, sweaty faces. This is simply what people should do. The body has the recovery capability. There is enough time for rest in bed and in the grave. Good article, though.
