I took my son last weekend to see the movie Wall-e. The movie was really good but one of the jarring parts of the movie was when you see what happens to people in the future. In the future all of the people that we see are living on a flying boat in outer space and are living a life of leisure so much so that they have lost most of their bone mass and have little legs and are very rolly polly.
Well apparently there are some that are saying that the depiction of people in Wall-e is Anti-Fat. In fact one of the writers at the Defamer Web site has found a couple of quotes from critics calling Wall-e anti-fat.
So what is Anti-Fat, is it a railing against a lifestyle choice? If we are going to say this then sure, if you choose to be fat then some people may decry that lifestyle and say it is wrong. But the fact is that I have never heard of anyone persuing the goal to be fat.
What we really have in Wall-e is a type of warning filled with comic relief. A bit of a commentary that as we all try to create a lifestyle of liesure that we have to look at what the consequences are. I joke with my wife that I am going to retire soon and sit on the couch and watch TV all day, of course that is the furthest thing from the truth, as we make plans for the future, as we change our lifestyles to make life easier then the only rational way to do this is to live healthy while at the same time lowering the stress level in our lives.
Having a different job, having quiet afternoons on the weekend, eating great food at restaurants, playing tennis in the morning, these are all lifestyle choices that we can make but when we make these decisions we are standing up for ourselves and making ourselves a better life. When you watch Wall-e take a look at the lifestyle that people in the future have nad see if it is something that you would aspire to.
