What is the Master Cleanse Diet?

I believe no matter what some people say that the master cleanse diet is a great idea for everyone to try at some point. I will tell you a bit why.

Most of us go through life having some up and down days and exercise or try to eat better to improve how our energy, concentration and look are. Not trying to hard but doing what we can.

Well for some people that is just not enough. I know that years ago I was the picture of fitness and then through some bad decisions my body started feeling not so great. My wife had to do one of those one day cleanses and I jumped at trying it as well just for a lark on a Sunday.

I can tell you I felt great the next day and for weeks afterwards. That one day cleanse changed the way I looked at cleanses although sometimes the medical community is slow to pick up on the results.

Anyone that has listened to the Howard Stern show on the radio, or has seen the movie Private Parts has seen Robin Quivers, the straight girl to Howard’s crazy antics. Well I just ran across a quote from a People magazine article where she said the following about doing a detox cleansing called the Master Cleanse diet:

“This wasn’t about loss,” says Quivers, who traces her health problems to steroid-based medication that she took in 1989 to regulate her menstrual cycle, “I was really trying to regain my health, and that’s what it did.”

“She’s a whole different person, “says Howard Stern producer Gary Dell’Abate, “I’ve been with her 20 years, and I’ve never seen her this happy and confident.”

As a fitness and health blogger I get lots of people asking and commenting on how good cleanses are for them in general and the master cleanse diet it particular and I know that the medical community is split, but once you do a cleanse, a proper cleanse, you will see and feel the difference as your body becomes much more powerful and you have better concentration and clarity.

Many people will do some kind of fast or detox or cleanse or whatever you call it to lose and although you will lose some it is like starvation , it will come back over time. If however you do the master cleanse diet with the right idea, to make your body healthier and more efficient then you are going to jump start yourself to losing much more easily because you will be in fact making your body work better and you will not be fighting the toxins in your body at all.

What is the Master Cleanse Diet?

Out of all the cleanses out there I had heard that the Master Cleanse is the best one. The master cleanse is also known as the lemonade diet or the cayenne pepper and lemonade diet. The 10 day diet is the detox method that you hear about celebrities doing and having success with. I just also heard from my wife that the girls on The View were talking about the Master Cleanse last week and Beyonce used it in getting read for the movie Dreamgirls. The Master Cleanse diet is free and you can buy the stuff for it at the suppermarket but really it is very very tough to follow through on

Why is the Master Cleanse Diet Tough?

At the start of the Master Cleanse diet everyone is excited but after the first or second day a lot of people bail out. It is importnat ot go through the full 10 days of the Master Cleanse diet and after a lot of searching I have found a way that should help you.

I have found a great and cheap product that not only teaches you how to do the Master Cleanse but since it is so difficult for the 10 days it is also a guide on how to do the cleanse most successfully so that you do not quit half way through.

I have never recommended a fast or cleanse before because I never ran across one that had the support system for it. I could make up a cleanse right now that would probably be good but if I had no support system for anyone to go through is then what would be the point, by lunch the first day you would drop it for a hamburger.

  2. Hi everyone, Im starting the master cleanse tomorrow, I gained a lot of over the months, Im 5’8 247 pounds an Im very unhappy not to mention uncomfortable at this . I have very unhealthy eating habits so I feel like I owe it to myself and my body. Im going on a mini vaca to Florida at the end of may and im hoping to lose 40 to 50 pounds, and i will also be going to the gym every morning starting tomorrow, I attempted the master cleanse in the past so i know what its like, I have a hard time getting the sea salt down but Im determined.   3. I’m starting the MC tomorrow. I have 14 days until I go on a trip to Florida, so I’m really hoping I’ll be able to lose the . I was wondering if anyone knew of certain exercises that would work well while on this diet. I just made my first cup of the concoction a few minutes ago and it actually tastes very good! Also, is no food at all aloud on this diet? I’ve searched everywhere and I’m pretty sure you can’t eat on it. Just making sure. Thanks!

    1. I would be careful exericising … you are not eating at all so you should probably conserve your energy … wait to exercise after you are off of the cleanse.

  4. hi every one,. its day 13 for me, i have not cheated,. all i have been having is the salt flush in the mornig,. 6 glasses of lemonade,. cayenne pepper and 6 table spoons of maple syrup,..then laxative tea before bed,.. in 13 days av lost 4 pounds,. is there anything wrong with me?? am 5,5 tall weighed 146 pounds at the start of the diet naw day 13 i weigh 142 pounds please help,.. though i have not been exercing only going to school and back home,..

Penny, Do not feel bad or get discouraged that you have not lost , sometimes people loses inches and not , i will say 40 days is a long time (i commend you for doing it that long) i am sure if you stay on the cleanse for 40 days you will LOSE ALOT OF WEIGHT AND INCHES.     1. long story short you drink the sea salt water and it makes you crap out all the junk in your intestines/colin, first you can’t eat for 24 hours prior to doing this, secondly it must be sea salt NOT table salt. you can boil the salt in the water the night before so the water is not as bitter, you can also add lemon juice for better flavour, and you gotta finish the water in 15 minutes and it must be luke warm. the recipe is below
      1 quart (1 Liter) Water
      2 Level TEASPOONS sea Salt
      Juice from a Lime/Lemon – if required to offset the taste

  6. So glad I found this site. I am determined to lose as much as possible in the next month before I visit my family on holiday. I’ve tried to start a couple of times, but gave up. NOT this time 🙂 I know it’s considered cheating, but I will be doing whatever it takes to stick with it, even if that means chewing gum or eating grapefruit (thanks to other posters for the tips). I figure doing that is better than giving up. I will be weighing in tomorrow morning and getting stuck in! I also intend to walk as much as possible and will be doing hot yoga classes to help with the detox. Wish me luck ….

I am 22 5’2 160 pounds. 35 pounds over !!!. i started the . master cleanse today and let me tell you it was not easy i couldn’t help it .. but hopefully tomorrow i can continue with out cheating , . so you cant eat at all?? do you gain the pounds u lost back when u start eating.?? guys i need help here … anyone here the kept their s off and happy with the results ? =] helppp

    2. I did the MC in July 2011 and lost 20lbs in 10 days ;-)!!!! But i have gained about 30 lbs since then. I will say My father passed in May 2011 and i was told that may have caused me to gain because people mourn differently. So my question is has ANYONE KEPT THEIR WEIGHT OFF AFTER THEY FINISHED THE MC?       1. I’ve done the master cleanse and juice fasts. You will obviously gain the back when you go back to old habits. News flash: You will gain the back if you go back to your old habits no matter what you do to lose the . A cleanse or juice fast is great when you’ve made up your mind to look at it as a jump start toward eating healthy.

  10. I just started the cleanse on Monday. Today I had the worst headache but I would not give into food!! I need to lose about 40 pounds and hoping to lost about 25 pounds on the cleanse.. I am going to start working out soon, once my body get used to the low cal intake. Wish me luck!!!!

    1. I started the MC on Monday as well and I’ve had the WORST headache all 3 days. It sucks!! I haven’t given into food either….yeh!! I’m with you – I will start working out next week when my body should be used to the cleanse. I plan to do 21 days. I’d like to do longer, but I have to start traveling. I’m hoping to lose at least 25 lbs during the 21 days. Only lost 2 lbs so far… Good luck!!

  11. Hey Everyone. Im On Day 4. This Has Been Kinda Tough But Its A Challenge That Im Willing To Go Through With. Day One Was Hard I Wanted To TASTE Food. I Wasn’t Hungry At All. So I Ended Up Eating A Hot Dog. Big Mistake. I Gained 2 Pounds. I Felt So Bad Afterwards. I Didn’t Give Up Though. I Weighed In Last Night And I’ve Lost 7 Pounds. Its A Start And Im Happy. I’ll Weigh In Later On Tonight. I Also Do Ab Exercises And Walk 3 Miles Around A Track. Im On My Way To Do My Workout Now. I Have A Lot Of Energy And I Sleep So Good At Night. I Have 10 More Days To Go.

So I’m Starting the MC on friday the 23rd of march this will be about my 5th time giving it a try lol i keep on quiting after the 2nd day but would like to go a full 20 dont really think that will happen im gonna try for 10 days then see if i want to go more. the 1st time i tride this i was weak and hungary haha then the 2nd same but the 3rd was serouse about it and was gonna do it made it past my 2nd day and took a bite of one thing got sick everywhere haha, so the 4th time i said no cheating gonna do this all the way i dont really know what happend here but on my 2nd day i got sick and through up like the exorsist decided i didnt wanna do something that was gonna make me sick but now im gonna do it another time and after reading everything that everyone had to say i plan on making it all the way doing this for the loss and the detox tired of feeling the way i do and ready to change it even if i dont loose it will be nice to feel better in general haha well ill make a comment back up when im finished it would be nice for some support and stories from you guys and if your doint this at this time too then great we can help another along the way haha thanx

    1. I started my cleanse today as well, Just finished my salt water rinse. To be honest it was horrible but I pulled through. As of now 13 days to go for me. I currently weigh 147 hoping to be at 115 in 13 days. I’m very excited to loose the not so much to drink the salt water lol 🙂

      1. Day one

        I did the salt rinse, It was the worse. Getting to the last of what was left in my cup I decided to drink it fast and swallow. Bad idea I vomited it up 🙁
        I brushed my teeth cleaned the floor since my body didn’t give me enough time to run to the bathroom.
        Anyway, I did not let this discourage me and I continued my cleanse. I felt fine that entire day.
        By the way you can definitely beat the hunger.
        You see my mom loves to cook and on my first day of dieting my whole family had tortas de chorizo which basically is sliced bakery bead almost like sourdough bread and in it you include the chorizo meat along with veggies; it smelled delicious and made me soooo hungry lol. Anyway, proud to say i made it through day one. Also known in my agenda as Day 14 [X]

      2. Day two
        OMG on day 2 I really felt the urge to eat. I thought to myself just a little bit of stew will not hurt. My mom was also not of great help as she kept tempting me with food in attempt to make me break the diet. Today she made posole. I don’t eve like this dish that much but just the smell of the food made me go just a liltle insane haha not really but really I pulled through and it was hard. The way I see it is, “It’s only 14 days of my life”, this is what I keep saying to myself and helps me move on through 🙂

        By the way salt water rinse is not for me, it almost feels as if I am in the ocean and a wave has submerged me deep into the water forcing me to drink a gulp of ocean salty water. Nooo, eww its not the best flavor. So what I did to solve this problem was include the salt serving to my evening lemonade. This was I still get the salt portion in my diet but I don’t have to take it on its own. Day 13 [X]

      3. Day 3
        I woke up this morning and went straight to the mirror, pulled my blouse up in front of the mirror to see my abdominal. YES!! I look smaller already 🙂
        I actually this a lot since I started my diet (well 3 days now) I feel this helps me motivate myself. I look in the mirror and see my abdominal slimming down and of course this gets me happy and motivates me to keep on with the cleanse. For more motivation I also see the negative side, I see my body is still not were i want it to be, I still feel fat and it makes me feel unhappy, “ughhh I’m not the ideal I want to be, I’ll just have to keep pushing, its only 14 days of your life, you can do this!!”.
        And by the way today I was able to fit in a size 7. I feel comfortable but I can’t wait to fit in a size 5 then a size 3. Out of this cleanse I am hoping to loose 30+ pounds and believe me I will as I will stick to the diet. You should too!!
        Believe me its hard but we have to do this, the only reason I would suggest you stop is if you have health problems or you feel sick as a product of the cleanse. Don’t compromise a healthy life style for loss of . I myself consider myself to be healthy, I exercise and eat healthy for the general part. SO yeah make sure you stay true to real priorities, such as a healthy life.
        Now today is my third day, and I have to admit I feel low in energy :/ . I really hope this is only a one day thing and that I feel better tomorrow and for the rest of the cleanse or else this might change my mid about following through with this cleanse diet because like I said I don’t want to harm my health.
        As for today, my mom has not cooked so at least this is helping my cravings for food. However, today I did make a stop at a CVS to take out money at there ATM and had to purchase something, I bought flaming hot chips. OMG i LOVE chips haha so yes I bought them and gave them the bag to my mom, I so wanted to eat that bag. i even thought to myself, “well it should be fine if I only eat 1 or 2 chips, right?!?”. haha who am I fooling, I didn’t do it because I knew I could crash. I couldn’t stop once I tried them so I decided not to touch the bad and just give it away to my mom to eat. Best decision I made because now i am a lot closer to my goal of 14 days of the cleanse. Day 13 [X]

    2. I am starting the cleanse today. This will be my second time around. I did it last February as well – for 21 days. It was rough at first but then it was awesome…lots of energy. The hardest part was cooking for my family. I have three girls – one is a vegetarian, one is a diabetic and the other is a food connoisseur at 7! I really felt like I was torturing myself making lunches and cooking meals. However, I made it through and lost 26 lbs. I gained about 6 back after starting to eat again but ate extremely healthy. During the last cleanse, I only did the Salt water flush once. yikes. I know that’s bad. However, i was repulsed by it. I will do better this time around even if it kills me – and i’m not sure it won’t. The tea doesn’t bother me as much but the flush was SO effective when I did finally do it, I can’t imagine the tea could work as well. I really want to get the maximum effects from this effort. Yes, I want to cleanse my body but I’m doing it more for loss. I haven’t weighed myself yet, either…still trying to psyche myself up for that. One good tip I can offer is this: carry a little container with you that has your cayenne in it. pour yourself a glass of the cleanse and add the cayenne at the last minute. It is nowhere near as hot as it gets sitting in the lemonade for hours. Sitting in the liquid intensifies the heat. However, taking pills is not the greatest idea either because the pill opens in your stomach without the enzymes your body makes to warn the stomach when one naturally drinks or eats something hot. Much better to just add it later and avoid stomach issues, especially with nothing in your stomach.

    3. Day 4
      I weighed myself today and I lost 6 pounds in 4 days, yay!! Haha this made me very happy.
      I still want to loose 26-31 more pounds. I was thinking of doing 14 days and tomorrow begins my 10 day count down.
      I might consider extending my MC time if I don’t get to goal. I want to weigh 110 currently I’m at 141. Wish me luck!!
      BTW my mom cooked pasta today, ughhh I MISS FOOD!! lol

      1. Day 5
        I wanted to wait till tomorrow to weigh myself again but I couldn’t wait so I hit the scale.
        To my HAPPY surprise I had lost 2 more pounds. WOW!!
        I am soooo beyond happy with my results.
        Today I weigh 139, this makes me close to my high school .
        To everyone that wants to try this diet, I say GO for it.
        If you want a tip or motivation I say.
        1. Your motivation should be your health.
        2. The ONLY way you will get through this tough diet is if you really WANT it!!
        I really am tired of having this extra weigh. It makes me sad at times and makes me lack confidence.
        I’m about to complete day 5 and have lost 8 pounds. I WILL not stop my diet till I reach my goal of 110 pounds.
        This year will be the year I reach my beautiful body. I WANT it bad I will work HARD to reach my goal!!
        By the way, today I had to resist pizza. Ughh its not easy but if we want it we cant push through and get the results we want.

Hey on day 3 you said you felt low energy heres a lil trick haha take a spoon full of the syrup and down it yourl get a sugar high and feel better dont do this all the time though just when your low on energy your not getting all the sugar your used to so this will give you the push if you choose to do it

  15. I just completed day one, and I already have lost 3lbs. I’ve had slight headache but I already feel so much better. I did switch to cayenne capsules instead of sprinkling in lemonade and it has made it so much easier.

After i gave birth to my son i couldnt drop that last 25 lb.s so i went on the watermelon diet 🙂 i dropped all that and felt great,more energy.basically you eat all the watermelon,honeydoo melon,cantalope,oranges,berries you want but emphasis on the watermelon.i have a sweet tooth so it got me through wanting to eat sweets and i was full all the time.all of those fruits have minimal calories and kept me satisfied.hope it works.also if you can do 10to 15 minutes 2,3,4, times aday of walking fast or high impact exercise of any kind your metabolisim will continue to work at full speed win your not doing anything,great for loss and you clothes will be fitting loose in no time.goodluck and a few a prayers to the MAN can certainly help you on the way to your new happiness.janet barry. 😉

    2. Hello. So i have done the master cleanse and followed every step of it. My first time was in December 2010.After I had my baby girl in may of 2008 I dropped down to 125lbs. Over the 2 years i gained 20 lbs. I was 145 when I started and dropped down to 137. It was only 8 pounds but i did the full 10 days and i did an herbal laxative tea at night and every morning of the 10 days, i did the salt water flush. It was hard, i wanted to give up on the 3rd day and the 7th day but never did. I didnt follow the ease out process and didnt change my eating habits after so gained all the wait back plus an extra 10 pounds. So in March of last year, I got pregnant and shot up to 191lbs when I pushed my 2nd daughter out on December 30th of last year. I dropped down to 160 and I was stuck there. I started the cleanse once again on Sunday, February 26th. I take nightly laxative pills instead of the tea this time and I only did the salt water flush for the first 3 days. Today is day 7 for me and I am determined to finish. I lost 9 lbs so far and i feel great. The salt water flush is optional but the nightly laxative is not. “read that on the sight.” It is hard and you need the will power to do. This is my second time and it is a lot easier for me. I can be around food and not even get the urge to eat. It’s only 10 days of your life. YOu can do. Just push yourself. Everyone is different so the loss varies. But i look skinnier in my legs, face , arms and abdominal are. It truly is great. No cheating. not even nibbling on a piece of fruit or gum chewing. Just water and the lemonade. Go for it.       1. Thanks for sharing your story! I just began master cleanse lemonade diet. Today was the first day of the lemonade and it taste pretty good. I did not do the SWF this morning, but will do the laxative tea tonight. I’m a little nervous, because I have a difficult time having a BM . I work out regularly so I did a hour of cardio and 15 mins strength training. I did not find a lot of good info around working out. Does anyone know about the working out? Also, do you have to take the SWF and laxative or one or the other? Thanks in advance for your help!

    3. The first few Day you will only go Pee a lot , them both … the answer will be a Minimun of a Lb a Day
      But people should really do the cleanser to clean your body not just thinking on losing easy

    4. I did the master cleanse diet in 2007 and lost 15 pounds in 10 days. The first three days were the hardest, but I got through it. I am going to do it again to lose and feel better. It made me not crave sugar or unhealthy foods. I had to slowly introduce myself to these foods. Yes, the master cleanse works. I only did the salt water flush once because I could not handle going to the restroom all day! I took he capsules and it did increase my energy.
