What is the Master Cleanse Diet?

I believe no matter what some people say that the master cleanse diet is a great idea for everyone to try at some point. I will tell you a bit why.

Most of us go through life having some up and down days and exercise or try to eat better to improve how our energy, concentration and look are. Not trying to hard but doing what we can.

Well for some people that is just not enough. I know that years ago I was the picture of fitness and then through some bad decisions my body started feeling not so great. My wife had to do one of those one day cleanses and I jumped at trying it as well just for a lark on a Sunday.

I can tell you I felt great the next day and for weeks afterwards. That one day cleanse changed the way I looked at cleanses although sometimes the medical community is slow to pick up on the results.

Anyone that has listened to the Howard Stern show on the radio, or has seen the movie Private Parts has seen Robin Quivers, the straight girl to Howard’s crazy antics. Well I just ran across a quote from a People magazine article where she said the following about doing a detox cleansing called the Master Cleanse diet:

“This wasn’t about loss,” says Quivers, who traces her health problems to steroid-based medication that she took in 1989 to regulate her menstrual cycle, “I was really trying to regain my health, and that’s what it did.”

“She’s a whole different person, “says Howard Stern producer Gary Dell’Abate, “I’ve been with her 20 years, and I’ve never seen her this happy and confident.”

As a fitness and health blogger I get lots of people asking and commenting on how good cleanses are for them in general and the master cleanse diet it particular and I know that the medical community is split, but once you do a cleanse, a proper cleanse, you will see and feel the difference as your body becomes much more powerful and you have better concentration and clarity.

Many people will do some kind of fast or detox or cleanse or whatever you call it to lose and although you will lose some it is like starvation , it will come back over time. If however you do the master cleanse diet with the right idea, to make your body healthier and more efficient then you are going to jump start yourself to losing much more easily because you will be in fact making your body work better and you will not be fighting the toxins in your body at all.

What is the Master Cleanse Diet?

Out of all the cleanses out there I had heard that the Master Cleanse is the best one. The master cleanse is also known as the lemonade diet or the cayenne pepper and lemonade diet. The 10 day diet is the detox method that you hear about celebrities doing and having success with. I just also heard from my wife that the girls on The View were talking about the Master Cleanse last week and Beyonce used it in getting read for the movie Dreamgirls. The Master Cleanse diet is free and you can buy the stuff for it at the suppermarket but really it is very very tough to follow through on

Why is the Master Cleanse Diet Tough?

At the start of the Master Cleanse diet everyone is excited but after the first or second day a lot of people bail out. It is importnat ot go through the full 10 days of the Master Cleanse diet and after a lot of searching I have found a way that should help you.

I have found a great and cheap product that not only teaches you how to do the Master Cleanse but since it is so difficult for the 10 days it is also a guide on how to do the cleanse most successfully so that you do not quit half way through.

I have never recommended a fast or cleanse before because I never ran across one that had the support system for it. I could make up a cleanse right now that would probably be good but if I had no support system for anyone to go through is then what would be the point, by lunch the first day you would drop it for a hamburger.

  1. I am starting MC on Monday, June 20, 2011 . Does anyone want to join me? The plan is to do MC from the 20th to the 29th, then a vegetable only diet till July 6th. Then I can try to eat healthy after that.

  3. I started the MC sunday june 12 2011 and im on my 4th day I was just about to give up ahhh!!! Me n my boyfriend are both on it together we are going to do it for ten days so we will see how it goes, Im feeling really good about this whole thing Ive been feeling alot more energetic and I have been craving food although i work at a place where there is food surrounding me all the time! I never done the master cleanse before this is my first time and the first couple days i was geeked up till now but im sticking to it like i said i was and i will let u guys know how it goes.

      1. I started the MC yesterday too….it really wasn’t too hard, until my bf kept mentioning food. That has been the biggest hurdle this far. I don’t feel hungry but I do miss the sensation of eating. I had dreams about food all night long though:)

I’m starting the Master Cleanse soon but can’t find GRADE B MAPLE Syrup ANYWHERE, I just recently bought Grade C and tried it for 2 days and stopped because the drink didn’t have really any taste and thought I should try getting maple syrup somewhere it so hard to find and I live in the UK….Does anyone know where I canbuy the Maple Syrup GRADE B?         I had the same problem finding Grade B as well, if you read the comments below someone told me you can use Grade A it’s just thicker but it will work the same..I start my MC on Monday hope it works out for you. Good luck

    1. hellow..thats one of my questions i found out that yes grade a still works but dont use the butterworth stuff how ever u spell it jaja..nothing artificial…it has to be organic..my other question i neeed to kno is..do i must use the salt water flush too?

        It is actually no where to be found that you Must use grade B. the only difference is, the Grade B is thinner, so it has less calories. Grade A Works just as well, and it leaves you a little more full. Tony, Sorry, but you must do it. You can rotate days, but every other day, you should take both laxative and SWF. I know it tastes horrible, but you will feel so relaxed and energized. Trust me

  7. Can anyone tell me if there is a difference in using organic and non-organic lemons when following this diet? Some people tell me it doesn’t matter and some say it does.

    1. none organic is a lemon drink….no good..use real lemons. do u know if i have to use the salt water flush too? while doing the 10 day master cleanse

      they tell you to do the Organics because they don’t have the chemical enhancers. I have tried both, and to tell you the truth, you never receive the chemical enhancers. Organic is just the Hippy style that never went out.

SO I RAN OUT OF THE MAPLE SYRUP AND I DONT HAVE ANY MONEY TO BUY IT I SWEAR NO MONEY AND IM ON DAY 2, I RAN OUT BECAUSE I STARTED IT 5 DAYS AGO BUT I CHEAT, AND THE I DECIDE TO START ALL OVER AGAIN YESTERDAY .       the Syrup is a filler. It gives you the calories you need to face the day. You can put 1 tablespoon of honey in, and do the rest a usual. You should also drink more water now, because you need to trick your stomach into thinking it has the same thing it always does. A good tip: Do the SWF at night…it makes you feel more energized, when you do it in the day, you feel almost wasted. I can tell you did this to lose , but you will lose about 20, and gain 10 back….this is about cleaning your body and leaving you energized. IT gives you the head start you need TO lose . and yes, eating a small apple isn’t the best. Try playing with a toothpick or chewing on some fresh mint leaves.

  9. I am thinking of trying this program but am a bit concerned. What do you do if you are on a regimen of blood pressure, cholesteral, potassium and baby aspirin a day pills. Do you stop taking your meds or continue on them while doing the cleansing? Please advise.

    1. I have only 6 days before I leave for vacation. Do you think this is enough time? I would like to do the full 10 but don’t want to wait until I get back.

      You can keep the pills, but after the second day of the master cleanse, do away with the baby aspirin. the next day your head will hurt slightly, but when your body is cleansed, it makes your head feel light and refreshed.

  10. I have completed all 10 days of The Master Cleanse twice before, both in 2009 and I am about to do it again in 2 weeks. My advice – psych yourself up for it…the hardest part about the cleanse is the mental aspect of it. Prepare yourself for about a week ahead of time – every time I would eat something or think about food for the week leading up the the beginning of The Cleanse, I would remind myself that in a week I wouldn’t be eating ANYTHING – it kind of helps strengthen and prepare your mind for what lies ahead.

    Next, it’s completely do-able. Some people suggest starting/doing the diet when you have days off, when you aren’t stressed, etc. I find that I do the best on the diet when I am busy and have a lot going on – keeps my mind off of eating and wanting to eat! Also, both times I got “the headaches” – they came for me about day 3 or day 4 – these will most likely be your HARDEST days. Remember – it will pass! No Ibuprofen or any pain killers can enter your body – but it will go away! Drink plenty of water and STAY POSITIVE – this is where the mental part is VERY important!

    Once you reach day 6 or 7, you feel AWESOME! I wanted to keep going just because I felt so great! Once you get to the end, you will NOT want to eat/drink bad foods, etc. It’s really refreshing and eye-opening and for me, a great experience. I also had a weird rash on both of my arms – some weird skin thing – and it was gone by the end of the 10 days (really 12 if you add the Juice and Fruit only days). I also exercised about 8/10 days and felt fine – I couldn’t work out as hard as normal, but it felt good to get to the gym and exercise – just be cautious.

    A lot of people have bad things to say about this cleanse, but we do horrible things to our body every day with the foods we eat, with alcohol, caffeine, salt, fat, etc. so 10 days of anything won’t kill you. And I think a lot of the people who trash this cleanse have never tried it – listen to your body! Not on day 3 or 4 though haha. It’s tough but once you get through, it’s worth it! And when you get to the end you will be so glad you did it – not only does it make you feel good and healthy, but it’s an amazing accomplishment when you think about it!

    If anyone has any questions, I’m no doctor, but I could give you my point of view having done it a couple of times. Good luck everyone!!

      I want to do the MC, but I’m nervous because I do get migranes and I am afraid I will get them while at work and i don’t want to start and then give up. I had a couple questions for you. How much have you lost during the 10days you did the MC? Were you able to keep it off? What can you use besides the SWF? Do you recomend any teas? Any tips would be greatly appreciated!       I’m on day 3 of the cleanse. I haven’t lost any and am feeling a little discouraged.
      I’m drinking around 64 ounces of the lemonade a day, with one tbsp of maple syrup per drink instead of two.
      Should I be exercising too? I felt like giving up today but am hoping there’s an explanation for not losing any by now.

      1. You might what to start using a herbal laxative tea at night before bed. This really helps rid the body of toxics that have been stored up in your colon for sometime. I would suggest that you try it for about three to four days. The will definitely come off. I did the entire 10 days and lost about 1.5 lbs per day. It really does work. I know a lot of people hate taking laxatives especially when they have to go to work, but this is needed if you going to lose the .

    3. To Master Cleanse Advocate: I wonder if you could give me a little support? I’m at the end of day 6 of the Master Cleanse and I am discouraged! The first 2-3 days were amazing – everything out and 10 pounds lost. The but day 4 I began to feel bloated and a little constipated, day 5 I did two SWF’s and neither really came out – I feel there is a blockage. I’ve increased the laxative dose, and today I even tried an enema to try and release whatever is in there – nothing really came out except the enema fluid. I’m up 5 pounds since day 3, I’m unhappy and I want to quit! I mean, really – how can someone not take in any food for 6 full days, exercise and only lose 5 pounds??? But I don’t really want to quit. What do you think could be causing this bloat? What would you do? You sound like you’ve been quite successful on this thing. One note: I have had 1 cup of coffee each morning as I was dreading the horrible caffeine headache I knew would come. Otherwise, I’ve been very faithful.

  11. Hi! I am planning to start the MC with 3 co-workers in a couple weeks. We have a few questions: 1. Once stopping the MC are people able to keep the that they lost during the cleanse off, or do you gain some back? 2. Are there any symptoms of nausea, extreme prolonged dizziness, etc? 3. We are nervous about the SWF..any advice? 4. We are all avid exercisers, everything from running to yoga and lifting. We don’t want to lose our stamina and experience atrophy. What kind of suggestions do people have for this issue? 5. Is the Ease-In recommended? We appreciate any advice people have! Thanks!

    1. When you come off the cleanse, watch your diet! Do the Juice only on day 11 and then fruit only on day 12. Then eat healthy and watch your portions, etc. I think it’s like any diet or any time you lose , you will gain it back if you’re not careful and don’t watch your portion sizes and intake.

      I never felt nauseous but I got a little dizzy sometimes when working out so just be careful – start slow – and listen to your body! I worked out the majority of the days on the cleanse but I didn’t work out as hard. I also don’t feel like I lost muscle mass.

      Don’t be nervous about the SWF – it’s nasty, but that’s about it. Do it when you have at least 1/2 hour to an hour afterward to be able to wait for what comes next. 🙂 It usually happens pretty fast and it’s nothing terrible. For some people, it may take longer, so just give yourself a little bit of time afterward. It WILL work.

      Both times I did the cleanse I did not do the Ease-in portion where you eat less the 2 days before – and I was fine. I’m sure it wouldn’t hurt. Good luck and let me know how you do!

  12. Well today is day one of the diet for me. I’ll be sure to post my new half way through the ten days and then on the 11th day when I weigh myself. I don’t really have any cravings. I feel hungry so I just drink more tea. I did something simular to this before in highschool . But I added an hour walk to it. I had lost 12 ibs and kept them off. Now after having my son I have gone from a cute slim body to 205 ibs. I miss wonder land (being in the 100’s). I looked in the mirror and realized I will end up one of those out of shape moms and I will not have myself looking like a cow. lol! A good thing to help keep the mind off the food is to clean the house from top to bottom everyday and leave the room when your family eats. I usualy save my me time for that.

  13. A friend of mine suggested to try the Master Cleanse Diet to help my constipation issues. That it is supposed to clean everything out. Is this true? I am trying to do a little research before I make a decision to try it. I have a appointment with my doctor next week to disucss my issue and I figured I’d ask him about this too. I have had issues with constipation my whole life but it seems to be getting worse the older I get. I am 29 years old and I’d say maybe 2 years ago it started getting worse. I am willing to try pretty much anything at this point because it’s pretty frustrating.

  15. The only issue I have with the master cleanse is the salt water flush. They tell you to not drink ocean water for a reason! salt water dehydrates the kidney and then the kidney freaks out and begins to go into survival mood, taking water from your cells. Then your cells wig out and it affects the whole body. My advice is to use only the senna tea in the moring and at night. The salt flush is NOT healthy. Dont be brainwashed into thinking this is a miracle cure. Its good to relieve your colon because it works really hard but dont take a bunch of salt. Think about how your body will react inside.

    1. Yes, I think it depends individually, we all have different bodies. What works for one, doesn’t work for another.
      I have a friend who told me she didn’t have anything after she drank the salty water, nothing get out even after 4 hours.
      For me it works , I am on my 7 th day now and feel great. The salty water doesn’t taste that disgusting to me anymore like it was at the beginning.
      There is SWF In Yoga , this is one of 6 Shatkarmas which are purification practices. There are also some body positions suggested that one should take after the intake of salty water and massaging the colon to help water to move faster.

      It is also a practice which the ancient Hawaiians used in their traditional healing. Salt water is a substance which is soothing to the interior of the body (the body’s composition being similar to the ocean). But again if you feel like if it is not for you replace it with something, just make sure that something really prompts you to eliminate toxins from your body.

  16. Do you have to do the SWF with the MC? If so, do you do it in the morning? And how long does it last throughout the day…like, the “flush”?

    1. I’m on my 4 th day and I feel great.
      You have to do the SWF ideally every morning for 10 days or whatever days you choose to stay on MC. If not at least for the first 2-3 days it’s a must!
      SW flashes your column from debris and toxins and this will make headaches and dizziness go away.
      It will be enough to drink 1 liter with 1 full table spoon, and flash will start in the next 1 up to 2, 5 hours. it is sort of having diarrhea.
      You will be amazed at what you will see in toilet and be wondering how could i carry all this trash and happy you flashed it all out.
      this is why it is called a cleanse, it is cleansing!
      Also it is important to take laxative tea in the evening it will help to move bowels and eliminate in the morning. Because you don’t take any solids it’s harder to have bowels but very important to have them to eliminate, so the tea will help you do that.

    I am starting the MC today. I want to do this to jump start my loss again, but the main goal is a photoshoot that I have on June 5th. I am trying to lose 30lbs or more within that 3 week period. From reading the post of others some have lost about 20-27lbs in just 10 days, which is very motivational for me. I am also going to exercise on the MC by walking on my treadmill. I dare not do my other workout regime because I will be too low on energy most likely. So, wish me luck guys, and please keep me motivated.
