folic-acidI remember when my wife was pregnant both times we were told by the doctor that she should increase her intake, actually supplement, with Folic Acid. Well there is a study from Australia that seem to show the link between Folic Acid and a reduction in Asthma issues in kids.

But taken later in pregnancy folic acid will actually have the opposite effect.

As you may know the number of kids diagnosed with Asthma has been skyrocketing over recent years and any easily implemented method that a mom can give to reduce health problems is definitely exciting news

Found in its natural form in leafy green vegetables, legumes and some nuts, folic acid is commonly recommended to women trying to conceive to prevent neural defects in the first weeks of pregnancy.

But the Australian study found that women who continue to take folic acid late into pregnancy were 30 percent more likely to give birth to a child which would develop asthma. Read the rest of this entry »

We have all heard about Tamiflu being a good product to take within a couple of days of getting symptoms of a flu including the H1N1 flu but as you ca nimagine there are many products out there claiming to be cures for the flu that have never been tested.

There is a real hysteria out there and a lack of vaccination shots available it seems so I am sure that I am not the only guy looking for an alternative to a flu shot that will protect me and this will always lead to a bunch of shysters trying to seperate you from your money using fear as their tactic.

Since May 2009, FDA has warned more than 75 Web sites to stop the sale of more than 135 products with fraudulent H1N1 influenza virus claims. FDA urges consumers to be cautious of promotions or Internet sites offering products for sale that claim to diagnose, prevent, treat, cure, or lessen the effects of the 2009 H1N1 influenza virus. Surviving breast cancer is a very difficult in the first place for any woman but the self esteem issues of a masectomy are something that many women find hard to overcome. A study was just released that seems to shed some light on the idea that by taking the steps to improve a persons body through exercise, especially lifting weights will improve self esteem in many breast cancer survivors.

In addition to building muscle, weightlifting is also a prescription for self-esteem among breast cancer survivors, according to new University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine research. Breast cancer survivors who lift weights regularly feel better about bodies and their appearance and are more satisfied with their intimate relationships compared with survivors who do not lift weights, according to a new study published in the journal Breast Cancer Research and Treatment. Many workplaces are taking exercise and health more seriously. There is a couple of great reasons for this. First, a healthy employee is going to be sick less and will be more productive. secondly, it is great to have a work gym so that you can help to get and keep employees with a feature that is different then many other workplaces have.

Northrop Grumman is a big defence contractor and has many employees and a ship building station in Mississippi that employees by iteslf 12,000 employees. So Northrop Grumman spent 250,000 dollars building a fitness center that will be the awe of all who think that a corporate fitness center is always dark, dingy and old. This sounds really nice and even the VP of the company works out there. Read the rest of this entry »

biggest-loser-traceyLast nights episode of Biggest Loser was a lot of fun as Allison,Bob Harper, Jillian Michaels, and all the remaining contestants went to Washington DC on a working vacation.

The Biggest Loser camera crew must have really enjoyed this trip I was thinking because they tried their best to get great video of all the landmarks during the show including a great end to a challenge doing steps ups in front of the capitol building.

There were lots of chances for the show to pump itself up with the idea that the Biggest Loser is a movement that is changing the way people live and I really do believe that the show does do that. Read the rest of this entry »

I ran across this article by the creator of the Fat Burning Furnace (sorry I have not done a review of the program yet) Anyway Rob is talking here about something that we see a lot of in the fat loss industry and that is confusion about what to do, especially when we see people promoting concepts that seem to be in conflict with others. Take a quick read and see what you think.

By Rob Poulos, Fat Loss & Fitness Expert & Creator of ‘Fat Burning Furnace’

People are confused more than ever about how to burn fat.  They are confused about the best way to go about achieving the body they want.  They are confused about what works and what doesn’t, and the reasons why.  There are countless individuals slaving away in gyms and fitness centers around the country right now. That is what my wife is saying this morning. Last night Halloween was a smash hit with the weather cooperating and lots of people dressing up their houses for all the ghoulish behavior that makes us all remember what it is like to be a kid and excited about free candy just for saying “Trick or Treat”

This morning not so much though. The kids were a little wired on chocolate and had a bit of trouble getting to sleep last night and this morning my son (he is 6) keeps asking for more candy. Only 3 candies now, wait until later for more.

My wife keeps a firm hand on the kids eating though. Growing up my wife really struggled with her weight and to make sure our kids don’t fall into the same bad eating traps and lack of exercise that she was used to growing up she tries to instill great habits in the kids. And it works with my daughter, my son though is another story. Read the rest of this entry »

vaccineI keep hearing about the mercury in vaccines and how this may be a health issue or not. At one point people with autistic kids were blaming the mercury in the vaccines for causing autism as well as other health issues but now I believe that this same group is now targeting the vast number of diseases that are being protected against in a single vaccination. As we become better at protecting against more things I guess we need to watch out for the delivery system of these vaccines.

Anyway, I have often wondered about the amount of mercury in vaccines and why this is an issue and in knowing that mercury is poisonous and stays in the system I could not understand why it is being used at all in vaccinations.

Thimerosal is a mercury-containing preservative used in some vaccines and other products since the 1930s. The kind of mercury that is used is called Ethyl mercury from the vaccine preservative thimerosal.  Ethyl mercury leaves the blood 10 times faster than methyl mercury, on which current risk assessments are based. My daughter got diagnosed with Asthma last week and it got me thinking about all of the times that she has had colds and been sick over the years. Of course the asthma was an even bigger deal right now with H1N1 hitting the headlines and 5 hour plus lineups here in Calgary Canada for H1N1 flu shots.

Nearly one-third, or 28 percent, of adults and children hospitalized with H1N1, also known as swine flu, have asthma. That’s more than any other chronic condition, according to a recent analysis of cases published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

“Asthma was the most common underlying medical condition that we saw,” says Seema Jain, M.D., a medical epidemiologist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Jain’s team analyzed 272 people who were hospitalized with swine flu for more than 24 hours between April and June.

Twenty-five percent were admitted to the intensive care unit and 7 percent died. Overall, 29 percent of children and 27 percent of in adults in the study had asthma, while only about 8 percent of the U.S. population has asthma, according to Jain. Read the rest of this entry »
