running-breast-cancer-risk-reductionA recent study from the journal called BMC Cancer shows  that in age-adjusted and BMI adjusted models,  anything more than 7 hours per week of moderate-to-vigorous activity during the past 10 years was associated with 16% reduced risk of postmenopausal breast cancer  compared with inactivity. Neither moderate-to-vigorous intensity activity during other periods of life nor light intensity activity during any period of life was related to breast cancer risk, and associations did not vary by tumor characteristics.

This is very interesting because we look at exercise in two ways. What we did this week and what we have done in our whole life. This study shows that the last 10 years are critical in looking at the help that good exercise does in lowering breast cancer risk.

However, the study which also surveyed activity at various age levels in the more than 110,000 post-menopausal women, found no link between breast cancer risk and being active at a younger age.

The women were asked to rate their level of physical activity at ages 15-18, 19-29, 35-39, and in the past 10 years.

“Our findings could help inform the mechanisms of the physical activity-breast cancer relationship,” study leader Dr. Tricia Peters of the U.S. National Cancer Institute in Bethesda said in a statement.
