If you are faced with a problem, it can be very easy to feel overwhelmed by it, but by choosing to focus on solutions to the problem rather than the problem itself we can learn to solve it far more effectively.

We have a tendency as humans to try to analyze a problem, understand it and try to work out what caused it. But by focusing on the problem this way, and the effect it is having on your life, you will find it difficult to see a way past it and can become stuck. It is far more effective to take your focus off the problem and start to think of a way to solve it instead. Try to imagine what your life will be like when the problem is solved and is no longer in your way; when you do this your subconscious will start to come up with a variety of solutions.

This is known as the solutions-focused approach, which works by focusing on the solution rather than the problem.

Taking a solutions-based approach when you are faced with a problem encourages you to see the problem as something you have- not what you are. You may need to identify and source any resources you need to solve the problem, and you may need to try more than one solution until you find the one that works most effectively. You will also need to look at times in the past when you have dealt with similar problems effectively and what you did that worked well- can you use this approach again?

Some people feel as though they need to fully understand a problem before they are able to solve it. However, it is only by solving the problem that we are actually able to understand it. It is like one of the clues in a cryptic crossword puzzle; once you know the answer the clue then seems obvious. You may have had some idea what the answer may be, and will try different words out to see if they fit the clue until you arrive at the solution.

When we are dealing with problems, we may already have an idea what the solution might be. We can then take this possible solution and apply it to the problem. If it does not solve it, we can then change our solution and try another approach. By moving our focus on solutions and away from the actual problem, we can actually solve it without ever needing to fully understand it.

What a great article – I have clutter and am always sitting here blaming myself instead of acting – I am stuck! I printed this article and am going to read it often until it really sinks in. Thank you!
