Are you hungry because you’re fat, or are you fat because you’re hungry? This is no chicken-or-the-egg question. To some degree, at least, you are hungry because you’re fat. You have more body area and that means greater surface to radiate heat and call for calories.

That being the case, foods which satisfy your hunger fastest will help you to cut down comfortably on your calories. Nutritionists call the hunger-satisfying properties of foods “satiety value.” Satisfying foods are those that remain longest in the stomach and small intestine, demanding the most vigorous attention from the digestive machinery.

Meat is the most satisfying of all foods, containing extractives that stimulate the stomach to highest activity. Milk ranks next to meat in satiety value; whole milk is more satisfying than skim milk. Fish is slightly less satisfying than meat because usually it contains less fat. Read the rest of this entry »

Thanks to Christine here at work. Here is a list from Divine Caroline of the worst fast foods to eat.

Dennys smoked sausage slam has 88 grams of fat? That is more than I probably get in a couple of days, and some people in a week.

Chilis Awesome Blossom was an appetizer that I had when I was in Hawaii. It is a broken up onion that is breaded and then deep fried. It was free with a coupon that we had and everyone in the family had a piece or two and then it sat. I tasted like crap and I tend to like a couple of onion rings. The bottom of the plate is just completely full of the dripped off oil.

Check the list, not before lunch or dinner. Makes me more aware of foods that you have to watch out for but we should all know that frying food is never good for you.

If you look deep in all of the US Government info on the internet you can find gems of information. I am not exactly where I found this first but a couple of weeks ago I found the Small Steps site that is targeted at adults and teens to get them in better shape and to improve their fitness. Here is just a few of the tips

1.     Add lettuce, tomato, onion, and cucumber to sandwiches
2.     Add vegetables like bell peppers, broccoli, spinach, mushrooms or tomatoes to your egg or egg white omelet
3.     Ask a friend to exercise with you
4.     Ask for more vegetable toppings (like mushrooms, peppers, and onions and less cheese on your pizza
5.     Ask for salad dressing on the side
6.     At sandwich shops, ask for leaner cuts and smaller amounts of roast beef, turkey, or ham; extra lettuce and tomato; and whole-wheat, oatmeal, or rye bread Read the rest of this entry »

With the switch back to Weight Watchers for my wife we have also added a new twist to our daily eating, no eating after 7:00 PM.

I didn’t want to mention this until after we had done it for a few days but what started out as a joke has become a great change in our lives. We started on Wednesday night not eating after an hour or so after dinner and over the last three or four nights I have missed snacking less and less.

The first two evenings of not eating I found that I was hungry when I went to sleep and my stomach was a little unsettled for some unknown reason but in the mornings I have not felt any different then I did before, not too hungry.

I have spoken to a few people that have done the exact same thing and found that they have lost weight wityhin the first week or two just from making the cahnge to no evening snacking.

What do you eat at night? Is it good or bad food or nothing at all? I know that I was not eating any really bad foods although I was eating some not very great food. I was eating fruit as well as trail mix and other kinda salty food.

There is one drawback that I am concerned about and that is the really long time between meals and what it will do to my muscle mass and my metabolism. I am a bit of a graser usually and eat throughout the day so my body never has to get nervous about me starving and because of this my metabolism is always pretty high and good.

Next of course is the whole catabolic balance. If your body is looking for energy it will use the energy within your muscles but if your muscles and the rest of your body can not find any energy it will go into a catobolic state where your body eats away at the protein and fat in your body. I know that this is what we are really looking for when we try to lose fat but the problem is that with any prolonged fast that you will lose the muscle that you really want to keep at as great a pace as you are losing fat.

Time will tell if this experiment with not eating at night will be a great method of cutting some calories and maybe even helping improve sleep cycles.

As an acne sufferer you have probably wondered for years what you can do to naturally get rid of your acne. Most dermatologists are quite happy to very quickly throw a prescription for Accutane or Tetracycline at you. How about more holistic natural methods to treat your acne? Eating is a great natural acne treatment.

Instead of immediately trying to treat your acne with pills or creams why not try your best to be more healthy in the way that you eat and see what your eating is going to do to help you.

Most dermatologists and the health industry as a whole do not seem to care much about the food you eat but think about your body and the way that your body reacts to food in other ways. If you eat greasy food how do you feel? Tired? If you  drink too much coffee how do you feel? Shaky and distracted?

Fogetting what the skin doctor days for a moment why not take a serious look at your diet and get really serious about cleaning up your diet. Here are some things that you should definitely avoid.

Greasy Foods – Deep fried foods are the very worst thing that you can eat. I have always found that my skin will break out if I eat a lot of greasy food.

Sugar – Sweets are very bad as they start your body in unnaturally increasing your metabolism and we do not even want to talk about how this will affect your blood sugar.

Caffeine – caffeine stimulates hormone production. This is bad.

Other than the above foods it is important to remember that dairy products like milk and cheeses as well as refined and cooked carbohydrates like flour, bread, rice, and chips are acid-forming in the body.

If you really want to get rid of acne, you need to eat more alkaline-forming foods like fresh vegetables and fruit, as well as some nuts and seeds.

Eating really can be a great natural treatment for acne. Looking at this list of foods you can probably guess that the more natural a food that you eat and the closer that it is to the source (unrefined) the better it will be for you.

One more thing to remember in this system is that you really need to drink water. Water is going to have a much bigger effect on your then almost anything else. What water will do is clean out your body as well as regulating your sweat and metabolism.

Try this natural acne treatment using healthy eating and your will see that it will help you get rid of your acne better then any prescription can.

I have been telling people to eat six small meals a day for a long time and people usually see big advantages to doing this very quickly after adapting to the new schedule. Now I have proved to myself why.

Over the last couple of weeks I have been pulled into some big lunch meetings with big food. When I say big food I mean a salad, meal, dessert and usually the main meal is pretty big. After grazing for years and never usually eating big meals except on holidays I  have gotten used to that nice even feeling with good energy but never feeling bloated but that feeling has left me these few times. This is not the ideal way to eat six small meals a day.

I eat a big meal for lunch, maon about my fullness, skip dinner, have a bit of a snack in the evening and then wake up groggy and tired in the morning. there is really something to be said for keeping an even blood sugar level.

So again, what should you be eating? Well get all of the food that you would eat in a day, all the meals, pop, snacks, everything! and then split all of this food into six servings so that you have six small meals a day and no snacks. This will have you kind of missing your dinner but loving your breakfast and the snack between lunch and dinner.

Try eating these six small meals a day starting today and see if you start feeling better almost immediately. I would expect that oyu will and the evening snacking will almost completely disappear.
