Just caught this long article on Eating disorders on the main MSN.ca site. There are a lot of facts in this article and it is interesting that when people want to better their health sometimes they go to far and actually harm themselves by losing to much weight. I used to hate the talk of Anorexia and Bulimia being a disease thinking that it was just a way for some people to get attention but have really learned over the last few years that this is something that is a very dangerous disease with very deep rooted causes.

Eating disorders have increased in frequency as a consequence of society’s emphasis and preoccupation with thinness. Eating disorders are multi-factorial, with genetic, traumatic and nutritional causes. In North America, anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa are the two most important eating disorders. They predominantly affect females.

What is the difference between anorexia and bulimia?

Anorexia nervosa is a psychiatric condition where people intentionally starve themselves because of a false belief that they are fat, or for fear of becoming obese. In reality, they are almost always underweight or of normal weight when the condition starts. It is estimated that more than 90% of all those diagnosed with anorexia nervosa are female, often from middle and upper socioeconomic backgrounds. This disorder usually starts in the years between adolescence and young adulthood, with the average age at onset of 14 years. Anorexia nervosa afflicts about 1 per 100,000 in the population at large, but the rate is believed to be higher among Caucasian adolescent girls – about 1 in 200. Read the rest of this entry »

I don’t know why I keep noticing these detoxing articles although today I do. I made a turkey for the first time this weekend and messed up making the gravy. After a few hours of suffering from all the fat in the gravy I have come to the sudden realization that I would like to detox it right out of my body

When we want to detoxify our bodies naturally, we usually look to herbs to cleanse our bodies. You can’t get any more natural than greens that come from the good earth, now can you? However, how efficient are herbs in taking impurities out of our system? This article features a list of Pros, Cons and general guidelines in using herbs as a natural detoxification of your digestive system.

The Good news about herbal detoxing

1. Herbal detoxing is all natural. There’s no suspicious complex formula or secret ingredient, so you don’t have to worry about bloating and other side effects brought on by strange chemical reactions. You should find out, though, which herbs will do what to your body. Read the rest of this entry »

detox diet optionThere are at least five detox diet options when it comes to trying to clean out your body. I am going to stay away at this point from the battle between the detoxers and the non-detoxers. There is of course a camp of people that believe that there is no good that comes out of detoxing your body and that it is just a waste of time. I have no view either way but thought i would just offer these fixe options out to you to either try or to give you something to think about in the future

In order of complication to do her are five detox diet options
1. Fasting
2. Monodiet
3. Cleansing diet
4. Colon cleansing programs
5. Systemic detoxification programs

Fasting Detox

Fasting is the first detox diet option and is a good way to rest the digestive system and to help “burn off” surface toxins. Fasts can be done with pure water or fresh juices, prefer¬ably vegetable juices such as carrot, beet, parsley or wheat grass. You can do short fasts up to three days safely, but extended fasts should be supervised by a qualified naturopathic doctor. I have seen several patients harmed by long-term fasting.

Monodiet Detox

Monodiets are a detox diet that involves eating only one food for a period of one to five days. These are usually done with fruit such as grapes, grapefruit or apples. My favourite is the papaya diet because the fruit contains high amounts of natural enzymes, fibre, vitamin C and beta-carotene.

Cleansing detox diet

Cleansing diets are usually high in fruits and vegetables and mayor may not be accompanied by detoxifying herbal supplements. Examples of these diets are the alkaline diet, the mucusless diet, the natural hygiene diet, the Fit for Life diet and the macrobiotic diet.

Various companies offer a variety of cleansing kits, which can be combined with this type of diet to assist the elimination of toxins through the liver, kidneys and colon. The best herbs for liver cleansing are milk thistle, dandelion root, cheli-donium, boldo, curcumin, artichoke and black radish. Foods that help support liver detoxifica¬tion are cruciferous (cabbage family) vegetables, flax, sesame, sunflower and safflower oils, garlic and onions, raw nuts and seeds and, of course, all fruits and vegetables.

Colon cleansing detox programs

Colon cleansing programs are a popular way to begin a detoxification program. These include colonies, colema boards, wheat grass or coffee enemas and a variety of psyllium and bentonite clay cleansing formulas. While it is im-portant to have a clean colon, it is also important to realize that other methods should be included such as saunas and dry skin brushing for the skin, and herbs for the liver and kidneys.

Systemic detox diets

Systemic detox diets are highly specialized detox procedures performed by a naturopathic physician or other health practitioner. Using a variety of laboratory diagnostic tools including biological terrain analysis, live blood analysis, hair analysis, comprehensive stool and digestive analysis and specialized blood and urine tests, it is possible to determine the body’s burden of toxins and the specific type of toxin affecting the body. Methods currently employed to perform systemic detoxification include homeopathic drainage remedies, nosodes, ozone therapy, EDTA and DMPS chelation therapy, high dose IV vitamin C and vitamin-mineral drips, peat baths, constitutional hydrotherapy, colonic hydrotherapy with chorophyll implants and hyperthermic infrared sauna therapy.

I have written before about detox diets and the options that you have if you would like to detox your body but I think that if you are serios about this it is best to look for more in depth info before you embark on anything more than a 1 or 3 day detox diet.

I have had a lot of email lately on the newest popular treatment for acne and that is Juice Fasts, or fast in general for detoxing your body to get rid of acne. Acne fast have become popular because over the last tow years or so many people have been trying fasts and enemas to aid in their health. These two methods are not new but just like Atkins a couple of years ago some health fads come and go and then a few years later after the hype has worn off the concept comes back again. This is exactly what has happened with fasts.

The question about using fasting to get rid of acne is one of anecdotal evidence more than anything. People go on a fast and then afterwards find that it has helped their skin, the idea is that a lot of toxin buildup in your system is flushed away by the very clear and clean diet that you go on for a few days. I know that there are a lot of naysayers to fasting and I am sure we will see a few comments on this but remember, if it works for you then it works .

I am no expert in fasting and the longest I have fasted for in the past is about half a day, but for treating acne there is a great book that I reviewed a little while ago and that is the Acne No More plan. Acne no more has a lot of it’s grounding in fasting and is a very popular book. Read the review and order the book. If it works then great but if you find that it stinks and does not help you then you can of course get a refund from the writer of the book.

I have helped sell a few copies of Acne no more through this review. and I hope that you like it as much as I do.

My family is a wealth of content for this blog. This week my 7 year old daughter has been constipated. We are always a little concerned about this because no one else in the house suffers from constipation and you really hate to see your kids suffering from anything.

Usually for the first couple of days after the first day that my daughter is constipated we will just make jokes about poo, with kids there is always joking about poo so it is fine but after a while we will start laying Taylor on the prune juice and making sure that she eats lots of Bran. All of this usually does the job and the constipation will never seem to last more than four days. This time my daughters constipation lasted for about six days so we took her to the doctor.

First of all most people and doctors seem to agree that to avoid constipation most people just need exercise, drinking lots of water and making sure that their diets are high in fiber. Sometimes this is not enough but usually this is all it takes to stay regular.

Our doctor gave us a couple of options Suppositories, Laxative, and Enemas

Suppositories
Glycerin Suppositories acts as a lubricant and a mild irritant and stimulates the muscles of the intestine, causing it to contract. The contractions help to move the stools along and makes passing them out of the body much easier.

Glycerin Suppositories may also be known as Glycerol. You may notice either name on the packaging of your medicine. Before using Glycerin Suppositories make sure your doctor or pharmacist knows:

if you think that you may be so constipated that you have a blockage
if you have any pain in the lower abdomen
if you feel bloated or have stomach cramps
if you have ever had an allergic reaction to this or any other medicine
if you are taking or using any other medicines, including those available to buy without a prescription, herbal or complementary medicines

How to use Glycerin Suppositories
Always read the manufacturer’s information leaflet, if possible, before beginning treatment.
1. If the suppository is too soft, it may be chilled in the refrigerator or under cold running water before unwrapping. Remove the wrapping and moisten the suppository with water. Lie on your left side (if you are right handed) and draw your knees up towards your chest, with the right leg drawn up more than the left.

2. Using your index finger or middle finger, whichever you find easier, gently push the suppository into the rectum, pointed end first.

3. The suppository should be inserted as far as possible, pushing the end of the suppository sideways to ensure contact with the wall of the bowel.

4. Lower your legs to a comfortable position to help you to hold the suppository in place.

5. Retain the suppository in place for at least 15 to 20 minutes if possible. If you feel the suppository must come out immediately, it has not been inserted high enough.

6. You may feel an immediate urge to go to the toilet. Try to ignore this as the suppository will not work for at least 15 minutes.
