arnold-armsI have been asked before how to gain weight fast. Most people that are weight lifting at one time or another, usually in the winter, try to bulk up and gain a lot of muscle for the summer, of course there is the diet down afterwards but we can deal with that later.

How to gain weight fast is a question that many people that are dieting to lose think is insane but I know from personal experience that many people would like to gain weight but do not really know how. I have a former weightlifting partner who had a really hard time gaining muscle no matter what he tried.

Here are some tips on how to gain weight fast that I think would help almost anyone. Read the rest of this entry »

I found a couple of posts around the internet that spoke of a study at McMaster University that showed that hard exercise for a shorter period of time is better than a long workout at a lower level of intensity. I found the article at the Journal of Physiology but you really need to be a scientist to decipher what they have to say.

When it comes to cardio exercise, less appears to be more.

That’s the conclusion of researchers who discovered that extremely short bouts of high-intensity exercise produce the same improvements in muscle health as longer, more moderately paced workout sessions.

In the two-week study, published in this month’s issue of the Journal of Physiology, 16 college-age men, all recreational exercisers, were asked to exercise on stationary bicycles three times a week. One group cycled for 30 seconds all-out, followed by four minutes of recovery, or pedaling at a slower speed while keeping the heart rate somewhat elevated. They repeated that several times for a total of about 20 minutes a day. The other group cycled at a moderate pace for 90 to 120 minutes a day.

At the end of the study, the men’s muscles were tested for an enzyme that’s “an indicator of the muscle’s ability to use oxygen,” says lead author Martin Gibala, associate professor of kinesiology at Canada’s McMaster University. In both groups, the enzyme level increased by about 25% to 30%. He adds, “You can think about that as being able to produce energy more efficiently, being able to go at a faster pace and exercise longer.”

Depression is a very serious problem for many people and families and one of the real problems is that as a person starts to fall into depression the change is gradual and even your family does not see it coming until you need help.

You may have been feeling low for some time, or have noticed that someone close to you appears to be out of sorts, and you may be wondering whether this could be depression; here we list the most common symptoms of depression and how it could be affecting you or a loved one.

One of the first signs of depression is that your sleep may be affected. You may have difficulty getting to sleep at night, and may find that you are troubled by negative thoughts. Often people with depression will wake several times during the night, or wake very early. Read the rest of this entry »

I have been pretty clear that I am just working most of my body in a single workout lately but there is of course another way. The split weight workout. With a split schedule you can do the same amount of work in one day but get twice the number of sets per workout. As you start lifting more and more weight and your body gets accustomed to the workouts you may start to get tired of and start not getting the results that you were getting before. If you are at that point than breaking up your workout may be just what you need to get to the next level.

Here is the classic 2 day split:

  • Day 1 – Chest, Shoulders, Triceps, Hamstrings
  • Day 2 – Back, Biceps, Quads, Calves

There has been a diet floating around for many years called the 3 day diet. It is crap and promises a 10 pound weight loss but is in truth a lie. I have thought a bit about this and decided to come up with my own 3 day diet.

Have you ever thought of going on a 3 day diet? I was just surfing around and found that there are people looking for something of a short diet. If you were to do a three day diet I fear that you would not lose a lot of weight but you would have an opportunity to get in better shape by eating better and concentrating on some of those fundamentals of good eating and good metabolism tricks.

So here are some ideas that I have for how to do a 3 day diet.

First as you get up in the morning on the first day remember that you will be trying to do a couple of things. You will be looking to space out your eating and you will be looking to improve your water intake to help fill you up. Read the rest of this entry »

lose-weightLosing weight for good is a big topic. There will also not be much said about some fairly obvious health issues. If you smoke or have a problem with alcohol or drugs, you probably realize that this isn’t good for you. The same with overeating. Some of the methods here can help you with these issues, but I am not going to go into any detail about subjects that are so extensively covered all over the mainstream media and internet. The same with the advice to exercise. I do refer to exercise in the breathing chapter, but I don’t spell out “get x number of hours of exercise per week.” Exercise is important, but it should be tailored to you as an individual. I don’t want to imply that what I haven’t written about in detail is not important. It just isn’t the focus of this report.

What I am doing here is presenting a solid foundation upon which you can build. If you do have specific health challenges, need to lose a lot of weight, get into better shape, everything here will definitely be a good base upon which to add anything else you may need.

One final note about the focus of this report. I try, as much as possible, to give positive rather than negative advice. What I mean by that is, except where it is absolutely necessary (as with the chapter on junk foods!), I try to keep the focus on the positive –what is good for you rather than on what to avoid. fruitIf you are wondering which foods can help in your weight loss goals, these ten superfoods for weight loss may be just what you’re looking for. First, a few words about superfoods and losing weight in general.

As a rule, when it comes to losing weight, the focus is on what you should not eat rather than on what you should. The reason for this is obvious enough. When you want to shed pounds, you have to cut back on calories, which means eating less. Some foods, however, can help to regulate your metabolism. This can make your body burn fat more efficiently.

One rule to follow when it comes to superfoods is that you should consume superfoods instead of other, less healthy foods, not in addition to them. If you continue to eat junk foods, it will be difficult to lose weight no matter what else you do. It’s also important to get regular exercise. Again, no matter what you do or don’t consume, if you aren’t getting enough physical activity it will be almost impossible to lose weight. Read the rest of this entry »

This article will give you some natural weight loss tips that you can use right away. Natural weight loss simply means losing weight without drugs, including so-called diet pills or medical procedures.

I would add another characteristic to my definition of natural weight loss -avoiding extreme, crash or fad diets that tell you how to lose a large amount of weight quickly. This is not natural for the body, and even if you do lose a lot of weight fast, you are very likely to gain it back -and then some. This is because the body has certain nutritional needs, and when you deprive it there is a balancing mechanism that comes into play.

So natural weight loss is really healthy weight loss. Being overweight or obese is not healthy -we all know that. But simply losing weight, without consideration of how you are doing it, can be just as unhealthy. Read the rest of this entry »

Are you trying to lose weight fast? The 5 tips that follow will help you. Keep in mind, however, that if you want to lose weight and keep it off that you have to change your lifestyle. That means following these tips consistently. It can be difficult to change life-long habits. Starting out is usually the hardest part. Once you develop healthier patterns, they too can become habits!

1. Eat Healthier Fats -the latest research shows that it’s not so much fat itself that is the problem when it comes to health and weight loss, but the kind of fat. In general, it’s a good idea to avoid trans fats, which are found in many junk foods, margarine, partially hydrogenated vegetable oils and commercial sweets such as cakes, cookies and donuts (you can find healthier, organic versions of these products). There are many forms of low carb diet but probably the most famous of all is the Atkins diet, created by Dr. Robert Atkins and popularized in the last quarter of the 20th century. Fad diets come and go, but the Atkins gained enough celebrity and medical support that it developed its own momentum, and took off in a big way.

Low carb diets vary in what they suggest that you eat. The strictest form, such as the induction phase of the Atkins diet, can suggest that you cut out almost all carbohydrate foods. This includes potatoes, rice and other grains, bread, sugar and anything containing it, and many fruits. Even carrots may be considered a medium carb food and eliminated for this phase, although green vegetables are fine and should be eaten in large quantities. Read the rest of this entry »
