Dr Gabe Mirkin on his blog this week talked about how important it is to take in protein after exercise.
Protein as we all know is built in your body and constructed from 22 amino acids. Some of these amino acids can be made by your body and another few namely histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, and valine. In addition, the amino acids arginine, cysteine, glycine and tyrosine are essential amino acids – that is aminos that you need to get from your diet.
Dr Mirkin talks about the fact that your blood levels of amino acids drops after a tough weight workout and the sooner after you take in protein the better.
This is one of those things that I think is a bit of a myth in bodybuilding and that is the taking of amino acids. Amino acids can be bought in pill form but I really think that this is the most expensive way to get your nutrition. How about doing something a little more normal like drinking a protein drink after your workout? Another thing that you can do is make sure that you protein levels are good by eating more steak, chicken, and one of my favorite cheap protein sources, Tuna.
From now on if you do not do it already make sure that you get protein after your workout. Nowadays it is fairly cheap to get a vanilla or chocolate whey protein powder that you can mix with juice, milk or even water.

I have been looking around today and found a few articles with some really good and helpful info that i wanted to share:
MSNBC has an article about dangerous amounts of lead in some multivitamins that were tested. This should make all of us vitamin takers more than a little nervous.
Diet Blog has an article about how Pizza Hut is claiming that Pizza is part of a healthy diet. Now I know that pizza is part of my diet and I really do like it but there is no denying that pizza is very high in fat, so I am not sure how strong this claim can be.
My wife switched us from eating regular table salt (in very low quantities) to sea salt a few years ago and Dr Gabe Mirkin has an article about just this subject, the differences between them.
And finally The Final Sprint has a long and detailed review of a Gel, Boiron Arnicab Gel, and it’s effects on muscle soreness. This has me interested as it gives everyone one more way to combat this real problem of pushing your body to the limits.

Over the years I have tried of and on to be a runner. As we all know running is great cardio exercise but, for me anyway, it is very hard on your hips and knees.
My favorite radio doctor, Dr. Gabe Mirkin has an article about “What causes runner’s knee?”
This is the time of new years exercise when the pain can become a bit unbearable. Make sure you are taking that aspirin and icing your sore spots!
