The Center for Disease Control is reporting that Measles Cases are at the highest rate in over 10 years. Most of the reason for the really high rate of Measles outbreaks is because of the fear of Autism from kids getting the

More measles cases have been reported in the United States since Jan. 1, 2008 than during the same period in any year since 1996, according to a report released today in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

One of the biggest complaints that I hear from people getting started, or trying to get stated, in working out is:

“Where will I find the time to workout?”

We all lead busy days and often the time between the morning when we get up and the evening when we go to sleep goes by in a blur of work, family, preparing meals, finding and foraging for food and getting a little bit of downtime.

So where do we find that few minutes a day to workout? I think that I have a bit of an answer.

Get you priorities straight

First things first. Look at your day from the time that you awake until the time that you go to sleep. What are you doing in every 15 minute block? You may think of this as micromanagement but really it is more important to look at your day and see little gaps and times when you are not batching your work. Read the rest of this entry »

Anyone that has been on a diet knows that one day there is no easy way to get past the first day of the diet. On the first day of a diet everything is fine and exciting. On the second day of a diet there is no way that all of those great thoughts of the first day will still be carrying you forward.

Here are some cant miss diet tips to help you after the first day of the diet.

Have a great bunch of reasons

Everyone has goals when they start a diet but these goals are usually far out. You know a picture in your mind of you and a bikini in Hawaii or something like that. Well if you have reasons then it will make things a lot easier. How about thinking about how much better your health is today when you are reaching for a cookie. Another great thing is to make a day of how great your day is today. Look back at the day from the beginning and only notice your successes. Keep your head in the sand about the bad things unless you have to and make sure that you dwell on great things so that you can do more of them all of the time. Read the rest of this entry »

Well spring seems to have finally arrived here in Calgary and not a moment too soon. There has been a lot of snow and late snow at that across Canada and the northern US.

Many people have been trying to follow through on New Years resolutions and others of courese did not bother. Well here we are at the beginning of May and as the month starts we look down to see a bit of flab, or the muscles don’t look as firm as we would like or even our eating amy not be up to our wished for standard.

Don’t despair it is not to late to be ready for Summer.

I know that I pushed myself harder then usualy back in February and March to get ready for our family vacation to Hawaii and was pretty happy about the changes that I made. Really all you need to do is make a few short term goals. Read the rest of this entry »

This is a post that I have written also for my new Family Vacation blog about eating when on vacation.

Vacations are marred by bad eating and not only bad eating but usually our daily schedules are thrown out the window.

When you are away from home it is very common that you eat based on hunger and snacks are almost always bad food. Both of these are very bad and there are ways to avoid it. Last month while on vacation my family was able to conteract this bad eating structure by planning all of our meals and snacks and here is how:

Kitchenette – The hotel we stayed at had a kitchenette and this was easily the best way that we were able to avoid any eating issues. Kids are terrible for not wanting to eat when it is time to eat and then being suddenly starving. With the kitchenette we were able to prepare probably about half of our meals and warm up other meals as well. Read the rest of this entry »

Thanks to Christine here at work. Here is a list from Divine Caroline of the worst fast foods to eat.

Dennys smoked sausage slam has 88 grams of fat? That is more than I probably get in a couple of days, and some people in a week.

Chilis Awesome Blossom was an appetizer that I had when I was in Hawaii. It is a broken up onion that is breaded and then deep fried. It was free with a coupon that we had and everyone in the family had a piece or two and then it sat. I tasted like crap and I tend to like a couple of onion rings. The bottom of the plate is just completely full of the dripped off oil.

Check the list, not before lunch or dinner. Makes me more aware of foods that you have to watch out for but we should all know that frying food is never good for you.

alli diet pillsWhile in Hawaii I finally had a chance to see the type of marketing that Glaxo Smith Kline are doing for the Alli weight loss pills. And wow I bet they are selling well.

First of all we all know that there are some side effects to Alli. The pills make you leach a bit of oil from your bum when you are taking them, other then that the Alli diet pills are basically a fat blocker that lets you know that you have eaten too much fat and stops your body from storing it.

Back to the marketing. Part of the problem that diet pills have had over the last few years is that they are very flash in the pan and no one trusts them, usually from good reason. I am not sure how many different diet pills there have been between Phen-fen to Hoodia and in between but there have been lots. Read the rest of this entry »

I have been away on vacation for the last few days. I went with my family on a vacation to Hawaii. We spent 7 days in Waikiki and the rest of the island of Oahu and I have a few stories that I am looking forward to telling about the weather and sunburns, about eating at restaurants, about exercise and workouts and also about people trying to have the best beach body.

I am still getting my bearings back since I have had to move back and forth across four timezones but I am less sleep deprived today then I was yesterday.

More articles this week. I am hoping to be a bit of a posting demon getting lots of tips up this next week.

Oh, and the Biggest Loser? I have missed two straight episodes so I will need to watch those and post about those as well.

It is no big story that obesity rates are rising in the US but there are new numbers out, and reccomendations from The Trust for America’s Health.

The gravy train — make that the sausage, biscuits and gravy train — just kept on rolling in most of America last year, with 31 states showing an increase in obesity.

Mississippi continued to lead the way. An estimated 29.5 percent of adults there are considered obese. That is an increase of 1.1 percentage points when compared with last year’s report, which is compiled by Trust for America’s Health, an advocacy group that promotes increased funding for public health programs.

Meanwhile, Colorado remains the leanest state. About 16.9 percent of its adults are considered obese. That mark was also up slightly from last year’s report, but not enough to be considered statistically significant.

The only state that experienced a decrease in the percentage of obese adults last year was Nevada.

“Quick fixes and limited government programs have failed to stem the tide,” said Dr. Jeff Levi, executive director of the trust, in explaining the rise.

Health officials warn that the incidence of obesity in a particular state doesn’t mean it treats the issue less seriously than others. States have different challenges to contend with when it comes to obesity, said Dr. Janet Collins of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

I just found an article over at Ediets of seven foods never to eat.

1. Doughnuts It’s hard to resist the smell of a Krispy Kreme doughnut, which is why I never step foot in the store. Doughnuts are fried chock-full of sugar and white flour and loads of trans fat.

According to the Krispy Kreme website, an average 3.5 ounce sugar doughnut weighs in with about 400 calories and contains few other nutrients besides fat. These sugary treats may satisfy your craving but it won’t satisfy your hunger as most of the calories come from fat.

“Eating a lot of refined sugar contributes to blood sugar swings or extreme fluctuations, eDiets Chief Nutritionist Susan Burke said.
