I was so excited this year about new years resolutions that I decided to create minor ones to support my big ones for the year for February.

Of course I am a little off pace after January for my new years resolutions but I can almost expect this. I always seem to aim too high and then when real life gets in the way I have to ratchet back my goals a bit. I have done this before and I will do it again and I expect it.

So I have made some nice smaller goals that are all about consistency. I have decided that there are certain things in my life that have not been gelling together and nothing will fix this faster then consistent effort and small results.

My fitness took a bit of a fall in January when I hurt my back and now my back is better so I am again looking at cardio every day and then taking out cardio days for weight days as I go through February.

Last week I was again reading the 4 Hour Work Week by Tim Ferris and it reminded me of a couple of things that I am doing terribly wrong in my life. First email, I check email constantly during the day so now I have decided as a way to save time I will only be checking mail a few times, maybe 3 or 4 times a day and either dealing with or deleting what I do not need. My email mailboxes are sitting at 3000 or 4000 messages across a few accounts and most of it is just junk and spam. I am not much better with reading RSS feeds and right now I follow about 300 different blogs, I will be cutting back on that too.

Another thing that I am looking at now is that I have made really great changes with my eating and not snacking at night. I am proud of these changes but now I am looking back on my new years resolutions and realize that the next step is cutting back on my pop and chocolate. This change in diet will not be as big as the other changes that I have made but I always like to make sure that I am moving in a more healthy lifestyle and going in the right direction at all times is more important then making those big changes that we always seem to strive for.

So now that I have shared all of that what are you going to be doing? As we all know most new years resolutions have failed already for most so it is my guess that now that we are into February you can make some better decisions and easier to attain goals that are all about you and not what you want to tell everyone else.

Share them or keep them private, but I really do believe that this is the best time to make betterĀ  goals and resolutions that will stick.

Osteoporosis is a condition in which the bones become brittle and weak, is responsible for about 70% of the hip fractures in Canada, leading to considerable disability. Healthy lifestyle choices begun at an early age combined with proper screening, early detection, and appropriate treatment can offset bone loss and prevent or delay serious complications.

Throughout our lives our bodies go through a process of breaking down old bone material and replacing it with new bone. In our early years, we make more bone than we lose until we reach our lifetime maximum bone mass. For a woman that can happen in her teen years. For men, it’s a little later. At that point, the process reaches a balance and the amount of bone made is about the same as the amount of bone lost. As we age, we begin to lose bone faster than we make it.

One in four Canadian women and one in eight men over the age of 50 will lose so much of their bone mass that their bones will become fragile and break easily. In severe cases, a simple hug can be enough to break a bone. Read the rest of this entry »

I know that many people are trying to quit smoking right now and now that we are in the second weekend of the new year they are really struggling to keep away from the cigarettes. I wanted to let you know that I understand how tough things are but the end is in sight and you will not have that urge anymore. Here are a couple things that bother a lot of people and get them thinking that smoking is not so bad. If you need a little more help then please go to the quit smoking reviews page

Weight gain after quitting smoking

One of the concerns that many people have when quitting smoking is the possibility of gaining weight.

It is actually one of the reasons why many people refuse to quit and why others will start smoking again when they see that they are starting to gain unwanted pounds. Most people will notice some weight gain when they quit smoking and on average the increase in weight will be approximately five pounds.

There are however many ways to make sure that you won’t put on weight and these are healthy lifestyle choices such as the correct food and good exercise. Read the rest of this entry »

Cardio Free DietI was looking through the local bookstore last night with the kids and saw this book with an interesting if completely wrong title. What the hell does cardio have with a diet. In my mind there are two parts of a healthy lifestyle and those are diet and exercise. Of course the book intrigued me so I had to pick it up.

Well it seems my first instincy was a little unfair. It seems that the book has good intentions. As far as diet is concerned Jim Karas is more interested in portion control then fighting the whole high protein or low fat or nay other high or low type eating style. Portion control is of course for the most important part of a north american diet and once you have that in check then you can worry about everything else. Read the rest of this entry »

How can you be lazy and get in shape? Everyone that wants to get started, or is scared to get started working out and changing their diet to become more healthy thinks that it is a giant change in your life. I would like to warn you not to make too much of the changes that you need to make.

Sure you need to change your diet. Sure you need to exercise but to get started in a healthy lifestyle you do not have to do much more than eat better and get 30 minutes of exercise a day. The changes that you make have an immediate impact to make you feel better and to actually be healthier right away but you still have the opportunity to be lazy a lot of the time.

I remember the first time that a lazy attitude to exercise first hit me. A few years ago when I started running. I had never really run before and the guys that were experienced were giving me tips. Stretch, start slow and start getting faster every week, try to change my route to keep things interesting. And you know what the last, most important tip form the seasoned runners was. Don’t push yourself too hard. Don’t hurt yourself by running all the time as you get started.

When you start to exercise you are going to be working out a half hour each day, six days a week. This will not be running from dawn to dusk. The change in your life to fitness will mean that you will wake up and work out or work out in the evening for a half an hour to get yourself in better shape and then stretch. You can even do this watching TV. Last night I did exactly that.

The other big change is your diet. Is it really so hard to eat better? No, all you need to do to actually to make eating easier and more healthy is to cook your food ahead of time. If you spend some time making a few big meals on Saturday or Sunday and pack these up for meals for the week. Get some Oatmeal or something as healthy for breakfast that will start you day quickly and easily. Get some meal replacement bars (low cal as you get started) and you have the makings of a lazy way to start a great diet without the hassle of cooking all the time.

So do you believe it? You can start a lazy way to get in shape and still change your life for the better. Sure there is a time everyday that you will definitely not be lazy. If you get into action making food it will give you a bit of lazy time later. But, if you are smart, workout hard and eat right this lazy way will hep you to get in great shape without the stress that you have to give up everything in your life.
