I have always fought with the idea of weather to stay home from work when sick. Some companies are very progressive with this and others not so much. In my workplace it is expected that if you are sick you stay home and if you are well enough to work but nervous about getting people sick then you just telecommute (freedom of being an IT guy)

Just keep this in mind: “There’s no antibiotic that can get rid of the common cold or flu or stomach virus,” says Horesh . “That’s my pet peeve … antibiotics only work with a bacterial infection … bacterial bronchitis, pneumonia, strep throat, earache, pink eye.”

Also, be careful about which medications you take for the common cold, says Nathan Segall, MD, a private practice allergy specialist in Atlanta. Read the rest of this entry »

exercise-dvdWith so many of us canceling gym memberships and turning to home-based fitness regimes, exercise DVDs seem to be the way forward for a cost effective, high energy workout. But with a whole myriad to choose from in the market, which one do you go for?

The selection seems infinite with a wide variety of DVDs targeting different areas of the body like glutes, abs and legs, or arms, shoulders and abs right through to all over cardio workouts like dance based routines or even pole dancing! There are also mat based body conditioning workouts such as pilates and yoga.

But, why limit yourself? We all have low energy days and a more relaxing stretch workout may be more suitable than a high energy one, so purchase a selection.

It is definitely worth spending time reading user reviews to make sure you choose the right workout DVD for you. However, here are some criteria to get you started.

Start by taking into account your preferences for exercising. Do you want to use equipment like weights or a step (for step aerobics) for example? How do you feel about music? Whether it is high octane or relaxing, have a think about whether music suits you. Read the rest of this entry »

pregnancy-weight-gainItching to shed those postbaby pounds?

Dr. Karen Nordahl, cofounder of Fit to Deliver International, suggests cutting yourself some slack.

“It took nine months to put it on; give yourself at least nine months to take it off,” she says.

To make the most of that time, focusing on fun activities will definitely be more effective. So, to aid the bulging battle, here are a few mommy workout ideas with a little extra spice.

WII

It’s amazing how much more enjoyable a workout can be when it comes in video-game form. Moms on the pregnancy and parenting site TheBump.com are all about Wii Fit workouts. “Love the Hula Hoop and boxing,” says one mom on the message boards. The Wii won’t give you all the exercise you need, but it can be a fun supplement that concentrates on your core. Get your husband to join in – he might just lose a little “baby fat” of his own. I think I made it clear last week in one article about doing weight workouts to increase your strength that it is importatn to do a very few sets with low reps to failure. I keep finding however referwnces to the 300 workout. The 300 workout si a workout inspired by the movie called 300 and is supposed to make you lean and incredibbly strong and buff. We will see how this influences regular workouts but this is long and mentally grueling with lots of sets and lots of reps for a workout.

Chris Aitkin is a martial arts trainer and expert and inspired this spin to the 300 workout which although I believe would work very well for overall fitness would also take a long time and really beat you up. I can’t wait to try it out.

What is the 300 Workout?

Ever since the movie “300″ came out and the rippling abdomens and rock-hard pectorals of dozens of stars and extras made their debut, many versions of the so-called “300 workout” have arisen on the internet. As a trainer and someone who enjoyed watching that movie, I was interested in what types of exercises these body-breaking workouts were employing, and I managed to find three or four different variations on the same theme.
