I have no idea how people will feel about this post but a couple of days ago Oprah had Kirsie Alley on again. There was hype on TV all week that Kirstie Alley would be on again and hints that she gained back her weight. Well in the big releal, yes she did gain the weight back plus apparently 20 pounds.

This story makes me mad for a lot of resasons. I follow celebrity stories a bit and never have emotion about them but this time I did.

Kirstie Ally has all the opportunity in the world. She has the fame of being an ex-TV star, she was a spokeperson for Jenny Craig, almost any trainer would love to work with her and probably for free. And in the end after weight loss Kirstie Alley would have anything that she wants, health, fame, fortune and all that stuff. Good drivers anyway

So, Kirstie Alley seems to have all the ingredients: opportunity, resources, and any number of great goals. Read the rest of this entry »

As someone that follows the ebb and flow of diets I get a chance to see a lot of diets as well as the reports as to whether they work or not.

Over the last few years there have been probably 100 diets released on an unsuspecting public, some gain traction and others don’t but the big diets over the last few years have been Atkins, The Zone Diet, LA Weight Loss, Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig. Most of the diets have not been successful for the vast number of people but two diets have stood out, sort of.

Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers have been the most successful diets over the last few years mostly because of the marketing that they do. Weight Watchers has the Duchess of York and Jenny Craig has had Kirstie Alley and now Valerie Bertenelli as spokespeople. Everyone loves to follow famous people and these famous people have lost weight so why not listen to the success and follow it.

Actually both Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig have been successful as diets the diets are balances with three meals and a couple of snacks and not extreme for high protein or low fat. Mostly Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers are middle of the road type diets that work for most anyone.

The sad thing about these successful diets are the lack of losses that people have seen on them. The average person will lose 10 to 15 pounds in a year on either Weight Watchers or Jenny Craig but the bulk of the weight lost on any organized diet is the fact that there is some kind of accountability in both of these diets. tori spelling weight lossMany of us remember Tori Spelling as the duaghter of Aaron Spelling and as one of the stars of Beverly Hills 90210. More recently Tori Spelling has had a couple of TV shows and got married and had a baby.

As with many people when they have babies Tori Spelling gained a little more weight than she expected during her pregnancy and the tabloids ran with it. This week there was a little bit of a coming out for Tori as she had photoshoots with her husband and new baby and interviews where she showed that she has lost all of her baby weight. The system she used? Nutrisystem.

We have seen lots of B rated celebrities over the last few years doing ads for different wieght loss programs most notbly of course has been Kirstie Alley for Jenny Craig who is probably more famous now than she was when she was on Cheers, as well as many others.

Most interesting to me in the Tori Spelling story is what is Nutrisystem and what does the diet program stand for?

Nutrisystem is a diet that looks at the Glycemic Index of foods and tries to have you lose weight with the GI Diet type of eating. There is some research that shows that the GI Diet is not very effective although the jury is still out. I have more importantly seen that most diets will work anyway as long as you strictly adhere to them as most people will see a little bit of success and then will quit and go back their bad habits and lack of exercise.

So now that we have seen Nutrisystem pass Tori’s lips we have to wonder if there will soon be a Nutrisystem TV ad campaign starring the “Inn Love” “Nortorious” star.

kirstie alleyToday I watched my first Oprah episode in years. The reason I watched Oprah? Kirstie Alley was on to talk about her weight loss over the last year. It has been a pretty amazing year and between the media machine that Jenny Craig created and the media machine that is Oprah this was a very talked about event with Kirstie Alley showing up in a bikini and then getting interviewed while wearing a dress.

It was an interesting episode where Kirstie Alley was very forthcoming about how tough it was to lose the weight and get comfortable with herself as a 55 year old woman, actress and the weight that she is at. Kirstie is 5 foot 8 and lost 75 pounds so she is now at 145 pounds.

The best quote of the show to me was that she never appreciated her body when she was 30. She says she would never appear on T-V in a bikini then because she was too introverted. She says women never feel like they’re good enough, or thin enough, or pretty enough, but they are.

One very sad story to me, was a story about a woman that lost 170 pounds by having gastric bypass surgery to make her father love her. As we all know gastric bypass surgery is very dangerous with close to half of all people getting the surgery dying within just a few years. This story was a real painful one to watch as it really showed the lengths that women are willing to go to for acceptance in society.
