Over the years I have seen a lot of flimsy ideas of how to get a set of six pack abs. The most common scams are special machines that will do it and sometimes some kind of drink. I remember at one point Slim Fast seemed to be showing chubby people suddenly spawning a set of six pack abs.
Anyway I wanted to put this notion to rest that there is some magic to getting a six pack. Sure there is some genetics involved in sculpting perfect abs but the two most important factors are diet and exercise.
What? Did you think there was a shortcut?
Six Pack Abs Diet
The diet part is fairly simple; you need to drop any extra fat. You have probably heard this before but there is no such thing as spot reduction when you are losing weight. You will lose weight proportionately, generally, as you lose weight. What you may find is that you have a large stomach and if that is the case of course you will lose that fat faster than you lose the fat on your legs but that is just because that is where the fat deposits will be easiest for your body to use.

I have been writing this blog for a couple of years now and this post should probably have been one of the first posts that I ever wrote. Change is hard, change is difficult, most of all change is exciting and helps you grow as a person.
We all want change and change needs to happen at many points in our life.
Of course that is not always true as our bodies and our minds fight change all the time even when we know how important it is.
So we end up having two choices, we can either stay the same or we can change. I like the idea of change.
So if you want to change, what does it take? I think there are a few things that you can do to make sure that you actually make some or all of the changes that you want to make. Here are a few tips that you may or may not know already.
1. Everytime that you find something that you want to change in your life write it down.
2. Align yourself with people looking to make the same changes
3. Every morning and every night look over your list and look at what you did to get closer to the change that you want to make (who cares what you failed at, we can fake it till we make it)
4. Don’t obsess about what you want but instead look at yourself as having already got there.
The simple fact that is most overpowering to all of these tips is that if you want to make changes then you must internalize and believe that the changes are already a part of your being.
I remember years ago how much I struggled to quit smoking and when I finally did quit I realized that it had not been hard at all as long as I want around smokers. About a year later i ran into lots of people that would say “I quit for 2 years and then I started smoking again” These comments made my will waver a little but I never started again and now after 10 years I do not even feel like I ever smoked. I have lots of things that back me up so it is not just my word in my mind telling my that I am not a smoker, it is my actions.
Fit people don’t smoke
People that exercise don’t smoke
Only unhealthy people smoke
This is exactly the way that my mind now looks at smoking. I am sure that almost everyone that reads this has some kind of weight issue that they are dealing with. You either want to lose weight or you want to gain muscle, or both hopefully. All you need to do is get all of your knowledge together and act on changing the way that you think of or picture yourself using the four points above.

Anyone that does not see scams in the weight loss industry has to be looking the other way all of the time. There are commercials, ads, radio spots and lots of internet based companies selling a dream that can not be possible. I see these everyday and just saw a very complete and well thought out article that exposes Lipozene, a product that makes huge promises and of course only delivers on the TV commercial.
ABC News has an expose type article about how they tested some popular diet pills by themselves to see if they would help people lose weight.
The test was done with a product called Lipozene that costs $81 per month. Lipozene is popular and expensive and according to the commercials it is a miracle that works even when you do not change your diet or get any exercise. This sounds like crap to me already. If this is really true then why wouldn’t somone have found it years ago?
The article is really worth reading, read it now and just skim even through the three pages and see what you think.
The real fact is that no matter what you do to lose weight whether it is diet or exercise or a combination of both the byproduct is that you will become more healthy as a result, if a pill could even lose you the weight it would not make you any healthier which would defeat the purpose of getting in shape in the first place.
OK one more thing. There have been a lot of products in the 90’s and even earlier that would crank up your metabolism and help you lose weight. These products did in fact work but just like in the way that Anabolic steroids will help a bodybuilder gain muscles, a ephedrine based pill will create a substute in your body and in the end will weaken your body by forcing. In the case of Anabolic steroids you pump up the testosterone in your system which will cause your body to stop creating it on it’s own and in the case of Ephedrine it will stop your body from naturally raising it’s own metabolism and also raises the chances of a heart attack.
Stay away from the scam of diet pills

I set off a bit of an email flurry a couple of days ago when I suggested that Gastric Bypass surgery is bad and is the wrong way to lose weight so I thought that I would explain why I do not like the idea of losing weight using gastric bypass surgery.
Gastric Bypass for those that are not aware of the idea is a surgery that either puts a band around a part of your stomach or staples your stomach so that it is smaller. This smaller stomach of course can hold less food so most people are going to lose a lot of weight very quickly and because of this Gastric Bypass surgery has become very popular.
OK so it is relatively easy to shed pounds with Gastric Bypass surgery how could I then be against it as a way to lose weight?
The truth is that Gastric Bypass surgery does not make you fit or healthy. The day after your gastric bypass you will have the same issues with food that you had the day before but now you will now be able to eat as much food. Also any emotional issues will not be solved with your weight loss. Most of these issues cause you to overeat although most people that are overweight think that that is the cause of their emotional problems.
Another more important problem is the nutrition that we all need from our food. If you starve yourself like is going to happen then you will have no way of getting the nutrients that you need and have to rely on supplementation to get everything that you need to live a healthy life. Now that I have broached this subject, how about the health aspect of this kind of weight loss? Being thin does not make you healthy as I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, in fact being thin can lull you into the false expectation that you are healthy. If you are getting lots of exercise then you need more calories to feed your muscles and after a gastric bypass you are not going to be able to get what you need actually get healthy.
Lastly there is no guarantee with Gastric Bypass. Once you are at the point of needing gastric bypass you can either die on the operating table or die after during recovery as your body is not strong enough for the surgery. Also there is a way that if you do overeat after your gastric bypass surgery that you may be able to stretch your stomach and now you will be in the same place that your were before.
So what can you do instead of Gastric Bypass?
Gastric Bypass used to be the only way that people that are morbidly obese could think of to lose weight but now that we are in the fourth season of the Biggest Loser anyone can see that there is another option. Sure it may be very difficult and take a long time to lose weight through diet and exercise but people that are really overweight can lose 100 pounds in a year and over this time you can become healthier, happier, build incredible self worth and overcome all of those food demons as well.
If you have been thinking about gastric bypass surgery I certainly hope that this has given you pause to reconsider. There is an alternative.

It was a pretty busy weekend for me and even though I did read through lots of my RSS feeds I did find lots of interesting stories this morning that I would like to share.
A new study seems to show that all of these weight loss pills on their own do not help people lose weight in the long term. I was a little suprosed at just how ineffective the results were but you can see for yourself.

A couple of days ago I said just go out and get 20 minutes of cardio. Well Workout Mommy says hell no push 30 tough minutes though the cardio. I can’t agree more and if you are at that level of fitness that it won’t scare you off of tomorrows workout then great.

What is a low carb diet?
I realized that I have mentioned a bunch of times about how people should lower the amount of carbs in their diet and increase the amount of protein in their diet. This is sometimes called carb depleting but the way I look at it if you drop your carbs somewhat and increase protein you are going to be in better shape. Just so not drop the carbs too far.
Low-carbohydrate diets for weight control have been very popular. Anyone who is considering losing weight has heard about low carb diets. Key questions you may have are: What are low carb diets? Are they safe? How do they work? Can low carb diets have any negative side effects to my health in the long term?

History of Fad Diets
There is an entire industry based around helping people lose weight in strange ways. This is the world of fad diets. I remember years ago my dad did a diet called the Mayo Clinic diet that was based around just eggs and grapefruit. Now the Mayo clinic is a very reputable organization but anytime that you find a diet surrounding only a couple of foods then you know that it can’t last. This is a fad diet.
When you are considering a fad diet what you have to look at is if this diet will become a part of your ongoing lifestyle. If you have an all liquid diet that is suppposed to help you lose weight then what are you going to do after the fad diet is over? Keep eating only liquids or go back to your old diet that was helping you gain weight in the first place.
Fad Diets and Shortcuts
Most diet pills, liquid diets, and diet supplements are short-term solutions that won’t work without long-term changes in your eating habits and physical activity level. And many produce side effects, which can be especially dangerous for people with other health conditions.
Fad diets can be another no-lose/no-win situation. Most are based on an eating plan that is not nutritionally balanced; some even eliminate an entire food group. This can cause health problems, and the weight lost is usually regained quickly once the diet regimen is stopped.
Just about every few months we will find another diet book on the book shelves and creating press around. I have recently stopped watching the TV show Survivor but I was definitly hooked on Survivor for years. I remember when I first started watching Survivor I used to say that I would be voted off in the first week, don’t know how true that is but anyway.
I have always enjoyed watching the people on Survivor do dumbe things and lose weight until the almost disappeared and then in a metamorphosis they would appear to get fat in front of our eyes during the last episode when the show gave away the million dollars.
So two questions, why do they lose so much weight and why do they gain it all back.
Well first of all everyone knows that if you do not eat enough food and still have to get exercise you will lose weight. Look what happens as the show goes on though, people get lazy, sluggish and make bad decisions. The real problem with the contensents on Survivor is that their metabolism slows, they start lacking in sleep and nutrients and finally near the end they seethe end in sight and just push a little while longer.
