Unless you have been living under a huge rock for a long time, you simply cannot deny the fact that elliptical trainers are the latest craze among fitness freaks. Apart from exercise bikes and treadmills, elliptical trainers offer you the most complete workout you could get at your home. Unlike other fitness equipments, elliptical trainers put very little strain on your body. In fact, they are so easy on body that if you watch a movie while exercising, you won’t even feel like you are exercising.
There are various types of elliptical trainers available in the market. You would want one which is decently built and affordable for your pocket. Yes, I know it is not an easy task, what with numerous brands trying hard to grab your attention with their flashy promises. Elliptical trainers come at several different price tags, ranging from $1,400 to $6,000, and are manufactured by several brands some of which are Life Fitness, Precor, Quantum Fitness, SportsArt Fitness, etc. So which is the best choice for you? Well that is exactly what I am going to discuss in the following article.
If you have never used an elliptical trainer, I would suggest that you join your local gym and try out the fitness equipments there at first. Once you get a hang of them, it would be easy for you to decide whether elliptical trainers are good for you or not. The next thing you need to do is to know the amount of calories you are required to burn on a daily basis; this is something you can learn from a doctor or nutritionist.
As a matter of fact, a decent elliptical trainer can help you burn as many as 750 calories or more per hour. So, if you want to burn 1,500 calories per day, you don’t need to workout for more than two hours.
When buying a home-based fitness equipment, one thing you should keep in mind is the amount of space available in your room for installing it. Treadmills usually take a lot of space unless you go for the portable versions which have limited functionalities. In contrast, elliptical trainers are very compact in size and as such, are great if you live in little condos or apartments like many others.
Make sure that the equipment you buying gives you a smooth and warm feeling when you workout with it. Elliptical trainers are known to put minimal stress on your body, so much so that you won’t even feel like you are exercising.
As for prices, I have found that in general you can get stuff cheaper from an online store than your local store; this is as much true for fitness equipments as other things. Before you buy a fitness equipment, it is probably a good idea to compare the prices of an online store with that of your local store.
On the other hand, if you wish to try out a model before buying it, then the local fitness store would be your ideal destination. You can try out the equipment for a few days until you get a feel of it. Once you are satisfied with the functionalities of the equipment, you can easily buy it from an online store at a bargain price.
If you are going to buy a second-hand or used equipment, then you should definitely head over to sports equipment stores. A lot of these stores sell quality fitness equipments at rock bottom prices. Even though these equipments carry the “used” tag, you have nothing to worry. As a matter of fact, more than half of those who buy exercise equipments never use it at all; as such, you can safely buy one without any worries.
In the end, you will want to get a quality elliptical trainer even if it comes with a decent price tag. Sacrificing quality for the sake of price is not a very good idea, especially when it comes to fitness equipments. Remember that when you are investing in fitness equipments, you are essentially investing in the health and well being of your body. Investing in elliptical trainers is probably one of the best things you could do for your health.

If you thought that the only function an exercise serves is that of helping you lose weight, you are terribly wrong. Everyone should do exercises, whether they are overweight, underweight or of normal weight. Your body weight has something to do with the speed and type of your exercises, but you should be working out nonetheless.
You see, besides helping you maintain a slim and sexy body, workouts come with several other bigger benefits. Studies have pointed out time and again that people who workout regularly are less likely to suffer from heart-related diseases or die a premature death than those who don’t; the same researchers say that women who workout regularly are less likely to suffer from osteoporosis and other body-weakening diseases than others.
Now the million dollar question is: if exercises are so important then why do people shy away from it? There are many reasons behind the ‘unpopularity’ of exercises. Read the rest of this entry »

Most parents hardly monitor their kids’ calorie intake until they develop fat bellies. It is then that they take their kids to an expert who suggests that weight loss is possible only with calorie reduction. Naturally, those parents reduce their kids’ calorie intake to such a low level that kids actually end up getting malnourished. Remember that weight loss is just another way of getting healthy, and a malnourished kid cannot lose weight. So what do you do? You need to understand your kids’ nutritional requirements and then adjust their calorie consumption limits accordingly.
If you thought that the same calorie rules apply both to you and your kids, you couldn’t be further from truth. There is a big difference between the calorie requirement of an adult and that a child; unlike an adult, a child’s calorie requirements would keep changing as he grows older.
The usual growth period of a human starts at the age of twelve and continues until the age of 21. Further, the growth of human body would be in harmony with his age and body weight. For example, during the teenage period, the body is more likely to grow taller and build strong lean muscles. Therefore the teenage period is the most crucial period for any kid, and you need to make sure that your kid is getting ample nutrition during this time, as lack of proper nutrition could affect his bodily growth.
Now you might ask, how much daily calorie intake is necessary and how much is too much? That is a good question. According to experts, boys should have a minimum of 1,800 calories per day while for girls it is 1,200 calories. However, these are just genetic figures. Since the calorie requirements vary from person to person, your best bet is to have a consultation with your local doctor or nutritionist.
To be on the safe side, here are some tips:
1. Split your kids’ meals into several smaller meals. For example, if he usually has 3 meals per day, split each of these meals into two; that way, your kids would be having six smaller meals per day instead of three large. The big advantage of this eating technique is that since your kid’s body is not overloaded with a lot of calories at once, he is less likely to gain weight. At the same time, he gets the required nutrition too.
2. Make your kids eat only healthy and organic foods such as whole grains, raw fruits and vegetables. Remember that healthy foods are more nutritious and usually contain fewer calories than their unhealthier counterparts.
Remember that while an abnormally high calorie intake may make your kid obese, an abnormally low calorie intake would affect his health negatively. At the end of the day, it is all about maintaining a BALANCE.

Beyonce Knowles-in recent times, days she became more famous for her sudden unexpected weight loss than either her vocal cords or histrionic abilities! Once she claimed on a TV show to have lost almost twenty pounds of fat using a special diet program, everyone went crazy over it. So what is this diet program and exactly how does it work, and more importantly, could Beyonce’s results be duplicated by others? I will answer all these questions in this article.
Beyonce claimed to have lost the weight while shooting for the film Dream Girls, where she plays her real life role, that of a singer. Now anyone who is familiar with the environment of movie sets would know that it is virtually impossible to maintain a strict diet out there. Now you maybe are wondering how she lost weight despite all the odds!
Well, her nutritionist prescribed a special detox drink for her and during the following two weeks, she survived on nothing except that drink! That is a bit tough I agree; I for one cannot even imagine being on a liquid diet, that too, for two weeks straight!
But that is what Beyonce did, and whenever she would suffer from unbearable pangs of hunger, she would douse it with this detox drink. So that is how she lost weight! If you want to follow this diet plan, I would suggest that you don’t use it beyond a week or ten days at most!
Fortunately it doesn’t take a lot of skill or expertise to prepare this drink. All you need is to do is to get eight ounces of clean and pure sprint water, and then add the following ingredients to it:
a) two tablespoonfuls each of lemon juice and maple syrup. Both the lemons and maples should be fresh and completely organic, and the juice must be made at home. Don’t buy high-calorie flavored juices from your local store!
b) If you want you can also add a little bit of cayenne pepper to the mix for taste.
So that’s it! I would say that it would taste best if you cool it off in the refrigerator but of course you can also drink it hot! Both lemon and maple cleanse all the toxins from your body and thus help you lose unnecessary weight!
However just like other liquid diets, this one also has several disadvantages, and Beyonce herself admitted to have followed it out of lack of choice; she further admitted that given a choice, she would prefer a healthier diet plan to this one. If you really want to follow this diet plan, make sure to fix an appointment with your local nutritionist just like Beyonce did, so as to make sure that your body is fit for this diet plan!
The one major drawback of this diet is that it virtually makes you starve, and that is not a good weight loss method. When you starve, you will lose weight for sure but that would be just water weight! As soon as you get back to your normal food habits, you would gain back all the ‘lost’ weight instantly! If you want to get rid of your fat belly or flabby arms, you need to lose FAT, something which this detox diet is unable to help you with!
Fatigue and weakness are some of the side effects you may suffer from the use of this diet, so be careful if you decide to go for it!

New diet programs seem to crop up almost every month, so much so that at times I find it difficult to remember all of them. A new kid on the block is the Ketogenic Diet. You may or may not have heard of it because it hasn’t been able to reach the popularity levels of Atkins Diet or South Beach diet. Nonetheless, weight loss has little to do with the popularity of a particular diet program.
In my experience I have found that people have lost weight with little known diet programs, and the opposite has also happened – that of people getting disappointed with the most popular diet program! The big question is: is the Ketogenic Diet just another fad or does it really work? That is what I would be exploring in detail in this article!
To understand the Ketogenic Diet, you need to know about ketones first, since this diet is based on how ketones function in our body. In short, ketones are the enemies of fats, and the more ketones your body has, the quicker you would be able to shed the extra pounds!
Now, as a matter of fact, our body has a soft corner for fat. It would rather burn your valuable muscles for the purpose of producing energy than that ugly fat. The Ketogenic Diet burns your fat deposits and produces the readymade energy your body can use. This is a win-win situation for you: neither you would need your body’s help to burn fat as it is done artificially by the Ketogenic Diet, nor would you lose your lean muscles!
Now the important part: which foods are you allowed to eat under this diet? Since carbs turn into fat and make you overweight, you should reduce their intake and increase the consumption of fatty foods. This means that you should be eating more of dairy products such as butter, milk, cheese, etc., and less of cookies, cakes, biscuits, chocolates, white breads, rice, pasta, fruits, etc.
The bad part of this diet program is that just like other fad diets, this one too is not without its share of side effects. Some side effects you may suffer from as a result of using this high-fat-and-low-carb diet are abnormal behavioral changes, stomach problems such as bloating and constipation, kidney troubles, as well as high cholesterol levels!
On top of that, there is no scientific or clinical evidence of the effectiveness of this diet with regards to weight loss. So far, only epileptic patients, that too mainly children, have benefited from the use of this diet. If you decide to opt for this diet, you shouldn’t do so without consulting a doctor or nutritionist!

Not too long ago, America was looked upon as the country of ‘obese population’. Today, this is no longer true. As western influences, particularly western lifestyle habits, continue to make headway into the rest of the world very swiftly, obesity is slowly becoming a worldwide problem. As waistlines continue to become wider and buttocks larger in size, we wonder whether obesity is soon going to turn into an epidemic worldwide.
Fortunately, unlike several other harmful diseases, obesity is preventable as well as curable. In my opinion though, prevention is better than cure. An obese teenager not only suffers physically but also mentally. In fact, when it comes to teens, obesity begets obesity.
When obese teens are ridiculed at by their peers, they become depressed. Consequently, they try to find solace and comfort in junk foods and eat more and more of them. This in turn worsens their health. This is why it is a good to prevent weight gain by monitoring the health of your teenage kids right from an early stage.
In any case, it is never too late to begin, so let’s get started. First, let me tell you how obesity could harm a teen:
1. Obese teenagers often suffer from depression for the reasons I mentioned above. They also suffer from low-self esteem, inferiority complex and irritability.
2. Just like their adult counterparts, obese teens also suffer from physical diseases such as sleep apnea, coronary diseases, kidney problems, high blood pressure, diabetes, etc. Additionally, recent studies point that that obese teens are more likely to die prematurely than teens of normal body weight.
3. Obesity can affect your child’s education and career in a big way. Obese teens are more likely to have their education and job applications rejected. They are less likely to get a cushy job as most companies consider the health of a prospect in a big way before employing him.
4. Obese teens are more likely to have marital troubles than others. It is no secret than obese people usually snore in sleep. Believe it or not, snoring is one of the leading causes behind the growing number of broken marriages and divorces.
5. An obese teen is very likely to live in social denial. Being used to mistreatment of the society since his childhood, he would eventually accept it as part of life and continue to allow others to mistreat him. As time goes by, he would become more and more depressed and might even want to end his life when the torture becomes too much to bear.
I am not exaggerating anything; I have seen so many obese teenagers grow and I can say that not many of them are leading happy lives as adults. If you wish to offer your kid a healthy, happy and long life, there are a few things you should do.
Teens take their parents as role models and follow their lifestyle habits. Therefore, you, as a responsible parent, can influence your kid’s lifestyle habits by following healthy habits yourself. Kids usually get attracted to junk foods after watching their parents enjoying them. By getting rid of your junk food habits and switching to healthy and organic foods, you would not only ensure a healthy and happy life for yourself but also your child.
Unless prescribed by a qualified doctor or nutritionist, a teenager shouldn’t be given any kind of diet pill or weight loss supplement. Many of these pills and supplements have harmful side effects which may do more harm than good to your teen kid.
Encouraging him to indulge in performance activities is another good way to overcome teenage obesity. These days, teenagers indulge more in video games and the like instead of playing sports which make them sweat, such as tennis, volleyball, baseball, etc. However you can reverse it by actively participating in these sports. As your teenage kid sees that you are enjoying a certain sport, he would soon emulate you and play it.
Remember that as a parent you are fully capable of influencing your kid’s lifestyle. Use that power now to insure a healthy and positive life for your teenage kid. Remember that it is never too late to begin.

Vitamins during pregnancy are very important.
If you have ever attempted to go on any kind of diet that involved reading the information on the nutritional labels of your food you are all too familiar with the fact that those little words and symbols can start to look like Greek after a while. If you’re not a doctor or a nutritionist you probably have no idea of what Vitamin B or Folic Acid are, much less why they’re important. The first step to conquering pregnancy nutrition is understanding what you’re eating, how much you should eat, why you’re eating it and how it’s going to help your baby.
A quick note. In the following section you are going to see several mentions made about the negative consequences of overdosing on specific vitamins. You must understand that this overdose very rarely occurs because of the foods you eat. More often it is because mothers have chosen to consume extra supplements in an attempt to “help” their baby or they have forgotten to tell their physician about other vitamins and supplements they take on a regular basis.
Be sure when you go in for your prenatal appointments that your physician knows exactly what vitamins, medications and supplements (including herbal) you take, regardless of how insignificant you may believe them to be. Read the rest of this entry »

With the rise in awareness about the different diseases associated with obesity, more and more people are trying to lose weight. People can lose weight in several different ways. There are weight loss programs created by professionals which individuals can join for a fee; then there are diet pills and supplements that claim to help people lose weight.
However, as a matter of fact, not all weight loss pills and supplements are that effective and it is hard to tell which ones would really work! A better option is to start losing weight through a healthy diet plan coupled with an effective exercise program.
First of all, you need to decide what you really want from your weight loss program. Do you just want to shed off a few pounds, or lose weight? Remember there is a difference of heaven and hell between losing weight and losing just a few pounds; the former will require an entirely different approach than the latter. Setting short term weight loss goals is very important. A couple of nights ago I was watching a fitness show filmed out of Vancouver called the Last 10 Pounds Bootcamp, and it really got me thinking about goals that most people have for their fitness.
Last 10 Pounds Bootcamp is a 30 minute show with a trainer and a nutritionist. The idea of the Last 10 Pounds Bootcamp is that the person will change their life, for a reason, by losing 10 pounds in one month. The girl on the show this week was going with some friends to Los Angeles and wanted to fit into a new dress for the trip. In the end the girl did lose the weight and looked great after losing 10 pounds.
The show really illustrates the power of short term weight loss goals. The reason that the show got me thinking is because most of the time we hear about people with really long term goals. Lose 50 pounds, lose 100 pounds, run a marathon, completely clean up your diet. What if instead we got shorter term goals that we could achieve quickly, easily, and repeatably?
Of course all of us that have tried to complete a goal have been able to make these long term plans but I am suggesting that you make no plan for change that takes more than a month. Can you instead set a short term weight loss goal? Can you lose 10 pounds in a month? Why not make a few goals not for the next month and then after you have achieved, or almost achieved your short term goal you can go and make another similar goal.
If you have a very large dramatic life changing goal it is going to be hard to keep up the work it takes to attain your goal if it is going to take three years or something so instead I suggest you break down that life changing goal in to a smaller goal, maybe a short term weight loss goal, that you can still get excited about and you can then work towards this bite sized chunk and then slingshot yourself to the next goal on this success.
My wife has always said that she wants to lose 100 pounds. If you saw a pic of my wife I am sure that you would agree with me that there is no way that she can lose 100 pounds but she could probably lose 30 if she wanted to. I have seen up close how my wife, although well meaning has struggled with temptations, occasional lack of motivation and sadness because she has set her self up to a goal that is to big to easily see the end of. If I could have her just see the end of the month or maybe by now the end of December and no later then she would have a lot more success.
If you are having some struggles try this idea of looking at where you are today and where you want to be in a month and see if you can do this instead. These short term weight loss goals are the real secret to continuing on your diet.
