History has long taken notice of the slim and attractive bodies of men and women from Italy, Greece, Spain, France, Tunisia, Lebanon and Morocco, an area also known as the Mediterranean. Medical professionals have also noted the lesser incidence of heart disease and longer life spans enjoyed by inhabitants of the region.
Mediterranean people have a unique diet, rich in antioxidants and heart healthy oils, which has remained unchanged for more than a millennium. Despite the drastic change in dietary habits in Western countries, Mediterranean men and women continue to consume a diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables and high in whole grains.
Modern researchers have uncovered the reasons why the classic diet provides such incredible health benefits, and diet programs incorporating the Mediterranean style of eating now flourish. Mediterranean diets focus on the key components of olive oil and fresh, high-quality produce.
Adherents of a Mediterranean diet are encouraged to replace dietary fats and oils with heart-healthy olive oil. Olive oil is rich in vitamins A, B-1, B-2, C, D, E, and K, as well as being high in iron. It has also been shown to lower cholesterol and may protect against ailments like stomach ulcers and constipation.
High consumption of fresh produce is encouraged, with emphasis placed on consuming those fruits and vegetables which are minimally processed and locally and seasonally grown. Whole grains, beans, nuts, and seeds, also minimally processed, give the Mediterranean diet variety.
Although fresh produce and olive oil (25 to 35 percent of total calories) are the true focus of the Mediterranean diet, lean meats are allowed in moderation, which reflects the eating habits of the Mediterranean peoples. Lean red meat is not off-limits, but followers of the diet should eat read meat sparingly.
Other protein sources like cheese, fish, poultry, and eggs are to be consumed in moderation throughout the week. Yogurt and cheese should be consumed in moderate amounts daily, while fish and poultry are to be eaten in limited servings weekly. Mediterranean dieters are encouraged to eat anywhere from none to 4 servings of eggs each week.
Like Western eaters, the Mediterranean peoples have long enjoyed a little something sweet each day. The Mediterranean diet calls for daily consumption of fresh, unprocessed fruit as a dietary treat. High fat, high sugar, processed sweets should be limited or cut out of the diet entirely.
Another health-affirming component of the Mediterranean diet is the addition of moderate amounts of wine. While over-consumption of alcohol is discouraged, Mediterranean dieters may enjoy one or two glasses of wine per day.
Moderate consumption of wine has been found to produce many health benefits, including reduction in incidences of kidney stones and reduction in risk of heart disease. Researchers have also found a link between moderate wine consumption and longevity.
While the Mediterranean way of eating is now supported by current dietary research, many adherents choose the diet for the simplest reason: it’s an enjoyable way to eat.

There are literally hundreds of diets, pills, and programs available on the market today for people who are interested in losing weight. While some methods might work better than others, the Ayurveda method of losing weight has been proven to work well time and time again. This method of weight loss is attributed to Buddhist monks and Indian religions. It is natural and works rather quickly; so many more people are starting to try this weight loss plan.
There are three basic principles to Ayurvedic weight loss. The first is to control one’s eating habits and not overdo it by gorging on food. The second principle is to exercise regularly, and the third key is to avoid the causes of weight gain as much as possible.
A very important element of the Ayurveda way to lose weight involves drinking water first thing in the morning. This might be a bit difficult but after a while the body gets used to it. Try to drink several ounces of water upon first waking, and then about 45 minutes later, breakfast can be consumed. A very light breakfast is important, and then juice or water should be consumed before lunch.
Some foods are considered to be real metabolism boosters. These include papaya, mango, ginger root, pineapple and dark greens to name a few. All of these things should be incorporated into your diet in some shape or form, as they are both healthy and touted to kick start metabolism, thus boosting weight loss. Incorporating essential oils into the diet is also important. Olive oil tastes delicious and is great for the heart. A diet high in fiber is definitely recommended.
Sipping hot water throughout the day is another important part of the Ayurvedic way. Ginger tea a few times a week is also ideal, as well as fasting on nothing but liquids one day per week. This can include soups and skim milk as well as teas and water. Of course, breathing properly is also a very important part of the weight loss process.
Practice yoga or meditation and learn to breathe deeply. Breathing properly can add more oxygen to the bloodstream, which will help the weight come off. Massage is a very good bonus that can help remove some fatty deposits around the body. Exercise activities like biking and running or brisk walking at least three to four times per week are also recommended. Recognizing the importance of liquid consumption and awareness can help you lose weight healthily and naturally.

With due respect to the huge number of posts written on the benefits of calorie shifting, I just wished that the authors of those posts had also taken the time to offer a few easy-go-recipes for the followers of the diet. Regardless, I am going to fill that need with my post. If you have been searching for some good recipes that go well with the concept of calorie shifting, you would be able to find them and more from this post.
For the sake of argument, I am making a few assumptions here, the first of them being that you are quite familiar with the concept of calorie shifting method of dieting. I am also assuming that you are a member of the fat loss 4 Idiots diet program, which follows the philosophy of calorie shifting diet. Now if those two assumptions are true, then you are going to benefit tremendously from this post. I will offer you a days worth of meal plan based on the dietary requirements of fat loss 4 Idiots.
For your information, these meal plans are only for the non-vegetarians; I cannot mention the vegetarian diet here, as it would mean infringing on the copyright of Fat Loss 4 Idiots. If you need the vegetarian version of these meals, you can access that from within their membership area. Read the rest of this entry »

As we all know the popularity of the South Beach diet seems to keep enduring as it is a normal type of diet. The South Beach diet is quite balanced and teaches people to eat better that they do now with foods that they would usually eat and eat at home with food from a grocery store.
Here is an interview with Dr. Arthur Agatston, cardiologist and South Beach Diet developer, as he talks about diet and exercise:
In your newest book, “The South Beach Diet Supercharged,” you write that “the diet debates are over.” What do you mean?
The consensus is that we’re beyond low-fat versus low-carb debates … The answer is healthy carbs — nutrient-dense, high-fiber, vegetables, whole fruits, whole grains; the good fats — omega-3 fish oils, olive oil … These principles are, I would say, set in stone.
Exercise is important
You also include exercise in “Supercharged” because you say there’s new evidence about the best way to exercise. What is that? Read the rest of this entry »

Natural earache remedies are very popular because they are effective in so many cases. As a father with a couple of kids I have seen the problems that my kids and other peoples kids have for earaches and ear infections. Usually you just give them some kids Tylenol but this may not actually be needed.
Are Natural Earache Remedies Effective?
Most infections occur in the outer ear. These infections are easy to access with drops and they usually clear up fast. In these cases, yes, natural and home remedies can be very effective.
However, you should be sure what you are treating before you begin using any natural earache remedies because infections in the middle ear are much harder to treat and can be serious. Middle ear infections are characterized by severe pain which is usually more acute than in an outer ear infection. In some cases, swelling occurs behind the eardrum to the point where the eardrum perforates to allow the pus to escape. This can cause long term deafness. So it is very important to see a doctor before beginning any natural earache treatment, to be sure what type of infection it is.
Inner ear infections can also occur. Often these are not painful at all but the person’s balance is affected. Read the rest of this entry »

It is a fact that men usually tend to accumulate fat around their bellies and waists, while for women the usual fat accumulation areas are hips and thighs. Contrary to what you might believe, the task of weight loss is not difficult at all. In this article I will provide you a step-by-step approach which would have you start burning fat like crazy!
Over the years several weight loss solutions promising ‘quick’ and ‘easy’ weight loss have come and gone by, and almost always people have ended up getting disappointed with them and been forced to return to the old school of diet and exercise. Believe it or not, the proven ways to lose weight are simple and old, even if hard! Yes, diet and exercise may seem to be hard to most people, but you can, if you want, make things easier for you by following the two simple tips below.
1. Your diet must contain foods from all the essential nutrients: Our body needs four types of nutrients in order to function healthily: carbohydrates, fats, protein and fiber. A diet rich in all these four nutrients would help keep your hormones in balance. Cut down or discard any one of then, and the balance is lost and you gain weight!
People think that they need to cut down heavily on fats and carbs for the purpose of weight loss; some even tend to starve in the hopes of losing a few pounds. However, none of these beliefs are true! Like I said, a healthy diet should be rich in all the four nutrients above, and if it is lacking in any one of them, then that diet cannot be called healthy!
Here are some of the foods you may want to add to your regular diet:
Eggs, lean chicken, or turkey or beef meat, etc.: They are all rich in protein!
Whole grains, nuts, organic fruits and vegetables, etc.: They are all rich in fiber!
Cereals, potatoes, etc.: They are all rich in carbohydrates!
Olive oil, salmon and tuna fishes, etc.: They are all rich in unsaturated or ‘good’ fats.
Something else to you need to keep in mind is the source from which you are getting the required nutrients; for example, you can get fat both from a burger as well as a tuna fish, but the difference between the two is that while the first type of fat would make you fatter, the second one would actually help with weight loss!
two. Your workouts must be tailor-made for weight loss: People become bored of workouts simply because they tend to indulge in long hours of boring cardio. For one, cardios are really not suitable for fast weight loss, and for other, there is no reason to spend hours upon hours on them just to lose a few pounds of fat!
What if I tell you that you can lose fat by devoting just fifteen-twenty minutes on workouts per day? Sounds crazy I know, but it is possible with interval training. With interval training, you can burn chunks of fat simply by spending five minutes daily on it.
I usually combine weight lifting with interval training; while I spend five minutes on interval training, it is fifteen minutes for weight lifting. By spending just twenty minutes in gym per day, I am able to burn fat not only during the workout session but also when I am watching TV sitting on the couch with my kids!

Guess how you gained so many unwanted pounds? I am not sure whether you were eating fatty or healthy foods before your weight gain, and I won’t even ask you about that either, because the type of food you eat doesn’t always determine whether or not you would gain weight!
Case in point: almost everyone would tell you that if you want to lose weight or avoid weight gain, you should steer clear of junk foods! But if that were true, I would have been overweight by several pounds by now, because I am a self-confessed junk food addict! If someone tells me to avoid junk foods, I won’t be able to follow his advice!
Hardly a week goes when I don’t have chocolates, cakes, white breads, etc. -all high-calorie junk foods supposed to make you overweight, but they haven’t affected my body weight over the years (yes, I have always been like this). I find also find it hard to resist the temptation of going into a fast food restaurant and taking a bite!
Now, here is a second scenario: I know a friend who ate nothing except fruits and vegetables. He would eat the fruits raw and the vegetables roasted or fried in olive oil. You would think that he is slim and fit, right? Wrong!
Recently he was fired from a lucrative job, thanks to the economic downturn which is affecting the world like never before. Needless to say, he soon got depressed and began to eat more than before. Again, he was eating only ‘healthy’ foods, just more of them than before. A few months into this lifestyle and now he flaunts a very big, fat belly in place of his original flat belly!
Were you surprised? Don’t be. It is all about controlling your food portions. In my case, what I didn’t tell you is that I ‘limit’ my junk food intake. I don’t visit fast food restaurants more than once or twice per week; as far as chocolates are concerned, I have a small bar every week but no more than that. I usually have white breads and cakes every two or three days, but both the bread and cake are half the size of what my brother has!
In essence, I have learnt to control my junk food intake in a way which lets me enjoy my favorite foods without the additional headache of weight gain.
My regular food habit is something I should tell you about too. Unlike most other people, I don’t have two or three large meals per day. Instead, I split those large meals into several smaller meals, usually no more than five or six. I have each of those small meals every two or three hours.
Of course maintaining a healthy diet comes easy for me since I work from home. I also make sure that I snack between two consecutive meals, and contrary to what you might believe, my snacks are anything but junk foods! I usually have a carrot or an apple as snacks; sometimes I even cook popcorn at home using low-fat oil and then store them in my refrigerator to serve as snacks!
In case of my friend, he followed healthy eating habits all along, but he erred on one count: he increased his food intake drastically owing to depression. In essence, his body received more calories than required, and consequently deposited those extra calories as fat, thereby making him bulky!
There are people who believe that the source of calories DOES matter when it comes to maintaining a slim body; however, as you saw from the above article, weight maintenance is all about exercising portion control. Give your body exactly what it needs at a particular time; that way, it would never have any extra calorie left to deposit as fat and you would always be able to maintain your lean, slim figure!

In losing weight, you have to keep several things in balance. This might sound difficult, but it is really quite natural. They are things you already do, like eating, activities, and socializing.
The only differences when you’re losing weight are little adjustments to your habits. Most of your habits are fine as they are – you probably already get some exercise just by going to work. Maybe a little more would be nice. As for your friends, the best ones will let you talk about the changes you’re making. If they’re not supportive, they weren’t friends in the first place! Out of all the changes you have to make to lose weight, the most important change is to your diet.
So how do you change your diet to lose weight? One thing most of us have heard about by now is to reduce the amount of food eaten. That is far from the only thing we can do, though. Just as important is to switch out some of the foods you eat for alternatives. When you do this it may help to know that proteins trigger your body to burn sugar and fat as fuel, while carbohydrates signal it to store them up in fat cells. Read the rest of this entry »

 weight loss study
A new diet study conducted by the New England Journal of Medicine has had some interesting results. I am always a little shocked by the poor results of these studies but lets dig into it.
The study was done in Israel with a group of 332 moderately obese people, that is people that knew that they had to lose some weight. The group dieted for two years and most of them, 84% were still on the diet at the end.
There were three diets, a low fat diet, (standard diet) a Mediterranean Diet (like the book), and a low carb diet (Atkins). The people stayed on the diet that was chosen for them for the entire two years.
The shocking part? That the did not lose very much weight at all over the two years. Read the rest of this entry »

I have written before about the best way to suntan and the best ways to get rid of a sunburn but now that Summer is here and I really do get concerned about the people that read my suntanning articles.
I worry that people will get sunburned, I know that people can easily get skin cancer from overexposure to the sun but also I remember how hard I tried in my late teens and twenties to get the best suntan possible with the skin type that I have.
These sun worshipers bake themselves carefully and with proper apparent care. They are careful to turn and twist their bodies in a way best calculated to get an even, rich suntan over as much of their skin as possible. They slather themselves with the latest lotion that promises to keep out harmful sun-ray effects and most importantly guarantees a deep tan.
“Ah, it feels so good,” they say. And I, with a trace of the sun worshiper still in me, agree. The warmth feels like a balm. Vitamin D is brought to the body by the sunlight’s effect on the skin. The pimples of acne can diminish or disappear when the sun’s ultraviolet rays play upon them.
Any teen-ager who winces with pain of sunburn when clapped on the back can testify that the extra time in the sun is never good. For everyone there is an amount and degree of sun beyond which danger lies.
Even a person who tans readily and easily may get harmful changes in his skin if he has too much exposure. Read the rest of this entry »
