What are the foods to gain muscle? I wrote a few posts last week that were about how to gain muacle and how to do weight workouts to gain muscle. One of the things that I kind of glossed over were the foods that you need to eat to gain muscle. Lots of this may just be a recap for lots of people but it is important to know what foods help you gain muscle and what your diet should look like.
Protein to gain muscle
The building block of all muscles is a combination of amino acids (the building blocks of protein) and water. If you look at that as part of your diet then you need to eat lots of protein. Here I want to stress lean protein, you know fish, chicken, lean beef, not Kentucky Fried Chicken or deep fried fish. Read the rest of this entry »

I used to do a lot of really heavy weightlifting, nothing like a pro bodybuilder, but have always been impressed by the Mr Olympia. Last weekend the Mr Olympia took place and Dexter Jackson won the Sandow (Mr Olympia trophy) and the title as Mr Olympia 2008.
Dexter has been a very high level bodybuilder for many years first placing 9th in the 1999 Mr Olympia so it has taken him until his 10th Olympia to win one.
There are many many bodybuilding contest but the Mr Olympia has overshadowed all of them except maybe the Arnold Classic, which is a contest sponsored by Arnold Schwarzenegger. Even the Mr Universe, which was popular in the 1960’s and 1970’s, does not have nearly the hype surrounding it as the Mr Olympia has.
The local sports shows as you may have noticed do not seem to talk about bodybuilding or this contest although there are a lot of hardcore followers that knew exactly what was happening this weekend in Las Vegas. Read the rest of this entry »

One of the biggest complaints that I hear from people getting started, or trying to get stated, in working out is:
“Where will I find the time to workout?”
We all lead busy days and often the time between the morning when we get up and the evening when we go to sleep goes by in a blur of work, family, preparing meals, finding and foraging for food and getting a little bit of downtime.
So where do we find that few minutes a day to workout? I think that I have a bit of an answer.
Get you priorities straight
First things first. Look at your day from the time that you awake until the time that you go to sleep. What are you doing in every 15 minute block? You may think of this as micromanagement but really it is more important to look at your day and see little gaps and times when you are not batching your work. Read the rest of this entry »

I have been working out off and on since I was 15 years old and one of the problems with the whole bodybuilding industry is that it is based on vanity a lot more then it is based on fitness.
I still remember when I was 20 and smoking and going into a bar and a fellow weightlifter told me that bodybuilders don’t smoke they just drink. Well going out boozing is not a picture of fitness to me anymore but the bodybuilding industry is built on vanity just as it has been for many many years.
I found the following interesting article at Intersportswire.
Thirty-five years ago the term “body building “ was synonymous with fitness. But in 2008 these terms are mutually exclusive. If your personal trainer is a bodybuilder, you should move on. Read the rest of this entry »

I have written lots of posts about the importance of goal setting in the past and I am sure they will surface again in the future. Going through my RSS feeds today I came across an arcticle that reminded me more about work than goal setting but it is a great way to set goals
S.M.A.R.T. Goal Setting For Fitness And Weight Management – Fitness Mantra : A Health and Fitness Blog
A SMART goal has the following, it is :
S – specific, significant, stretching
M – measurable, meaningful, motivational
A – agreed upon, attainable, achievable, acceptable, action-oriented
R – realistic, relevant, reasonable, rewarding, results-oriented
T – time-based, timely, tangible, trackable
All of this makes sense right? Well Fitness Mantra has a very good in depth write up of what all of this means. The important thing is to create these goals correctly. If you want to gain or to lose 30 pounds it means nothing unless a clock is ticking. If you want to win the Mr Olympia but you are 40 (like me) then it is not very realistic unless of course there are extenuating circumstances that you know can allow you to achieve.
Check the article and today make sure that all of your goals are time based and realistic. You need a plan and a planned outcome so start this today
