computer support lose weightI have never mentioned what I do for a living but I am a computer geek. I do application support for a big transport company in Canada and have spent my share of hours over the years in server rooms, at desktops, buried in code on my laptop and now deploying software.

One thing that I think that all computer guys have in common is a pretty sedentary lifestyle. The stereotype tends to fit. I know this because I stare into my laptop most of the day everyday. So in keeping with the idea that one of the big two new years resolutions is to lose weight I will appeal to my geek friends and colleagues to make these changes along with me.

1. Make sure that you get away from your desk once an hour. I know that this can be difficult but it is important. The more time that we spend at our desks the more we get done but there is a couple of downsides. First your concentration tends to drop after an hour dug into a problem looking for a solution, second of all as time goes on your posture gets worse and you will find your shoulders falling and your body will start to hate you for it. The aches and pains in your shoulders and upper back are directly caused from this bad posture. Read the rest of this entry »

I had to laugh when I went one of my favorite sites about blogging and ran across an article about how bloggers eat unhealthily. I go to ProBlogger for blogging tips not for eating tips but I think that the article nailed it as far as how people sitting at a computer tend to eat very badly just out of convenience. Here are the tips:

1. Not Planning Your Meals and Snacks
2. Eating sporadically and erratically
3. Loading up on high carb, low fat or low carb food
4. Eating nothing but packaged, high-convenience foods
5. Taking supplements in place of eating real foods
6. Depriving yourself of things you enjoy in the name of ‘health’
7. Ignoring the warning signs your body is giving you

These are for sure a list of great tips that you should take to heart if you work at a computer all day.

I have been telling people to eat six small meals a day for a long time and people usually see big advantages to doing this very quickly after adapting to the new schedule. Now I have proved to myself why.

Over the last couple of weeks I have been pulled into some big lunch meetings with big food. When I say big food I mean a salad, meal, dessert and usually the main meal is pretty big. After grazing for years and never usually eating big meals except on holidays I  have gotten used to that nice even feeling with good energy but never feeling bloated but that feeling has left me these few times. This is not the ideal way to eat six small meals a day.

I eat a big meal for lunch, maon about my fullness, skip dinner, have a bit of a snack in the evening and then wake up groggy and tired in the morning. there is really something to be said for keeping an even blood sugar level.

So again, what should you be eating? Well get all of the food that you would eat in a day, all the meals, pop, snacks, everything! and then split all of this food into six servings so that you have six small meals a day and no snacks. This will have you kind of missing your dinner but loving your breakfast and the snack between lunch and dinner.

Try eating these six small meals a day starting today and see if you start feeling better almost immediately. I would expect that oyu will and the evening snacking will almost completely disappear.
