Just caught this long article on Eating disorders on the main MSN.ca site. There are a lot of facts in this article and it is interesting that when people want to better their health sometimes they go to far and actually harm themselves by losing to much weight. I used to hate the talk of Anorexia and Bulimia being a disease thinking that it was just a way for some people to get attention but have really learned over the last few years that this is something that is a very dangerous disease with very deep rooted causes.
Eating disorders have increased in frequency as a consequence of society’s emphasis and preoccupation with thinness. Eating disorders are multi-factorial, with genetic, traumatic and nutritional causes. In North America, anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa are the two most important eating disorders. They predominantly affect females.
What is the difference between anorexia and bulimia?
Anorexia nervosa is a psychiatric condition where people intentionally starve themselves because of a false belief that they are fat, or for fear of becoming obese. In reality, they are almost always underweight or of normal weight when the condition starts. It is estimated that more than 90% of all those diagnosed with anorexia nervosa are female, often from middle and upper socioeconomic backgrounds. This disorder usually starts in the years between adolescence and young adulthood, with the average age at onset of 14 years. Anorexia nervosa afflicts about 1 per 100,000 in the population at large, but the rate is believed to be higher among Caucasian adolescent girls – about 1 in 200. Read the rest of this entry »

Some of the most astonishing miracles to come out of the nutrition laboratories in recent months have had to do with the mighty family of water-soluble vitamins grouped together under the head of the B complex.
When they use the term “B complex,” scientists are tacitly admitting that they do not know all the vitamins that compose it. Yet experiments with animals indicate that the B vitamins may turn out to be the most remarkable treasure house o£ human health thus far discovered.
The entire B complex (not the individual and better known B vitamins) appears to be a preventive o£ baldness and of gray hair, at least in animals, as we shall later see. Liberal B intake in animals is believed by many researchers to encourage greater resistance to infantile paralysis. Also, in very recent experiments, it has proved remarkably effective in preventing the development of liver cancers in laboratory rats. Right now there is a ferment of activity to relate these startling findings to human beings. Read the rest of this entry »

Anyone that has watched the Survivor TV show knows that starvation will help you lose weight. Anyone that has seen a season finale of the Survivor TV show knows that after you starve off the weight you will put is back on again, and fast.
Well the people that make and market Survivor have decided that they can branch out into foods and diet products. We will have to see where this leads.
CBS Consumer Products has signed at least two new licensing agreements for the Survivor brand that will move the long-running reality show into the realm of health and fitness — with the potential for “many more” product opportunities, Daily Variety reported Wednesday.
Survivor Supercharged Sunflower Seeds are scheduled to hit the shelves in March and the Survivor Fitness Program will launch later this spring in Chicago, according to Variety.
Survivor is part of the lexicon now here in the United States,” CBS Consumer Products executive Liz Kalodner told Variety. “We can translate it into any product or experience that is about challenging one’s self, or the ultimate outdoor experience. Both of these new launches play into that.”
Full Charge Energy Foods concocted the vitamin-infused sunflower seeds, which will be supercharged with 100% of the daily recommended portion of vitamins B and C, according to Variety. The Survivor Fitness Program was created by Fitness Team One and will reportedly utilize “Survivor-style game elements and physical challenges” to help participants live a healthier lifestyle.
Kalodner told Variety she’s also finalizing deals that will create Survivor-themed outdoor adventure programs and corporate team-building/leadership development plans.
In addition, Survivor camping gear, active-wear clothing and more energy-based food products could be on the horizon, Variety reported.
“We’ve got a lot of irons in the fire,” Kalodner told Variety. “You’ll see a lot more along the way.”

We all have up days and down days and there are many ways in which we deal with it.
We also usually try to eat well and at other times we eat not so well, but our bodies will take care of us right?
Well for some people that is just not enough. I know that years ago I was the picture of fitness and then through some bad decisions my body started feeling not so great. My wife had to do one of those one day cleanses and I jumped at trying it as well just for a lark on a Sunday.
I can tell you I felt great the next day and for weeks afterwards. Read the rest of this entry »

You will find a free list of negative calorie foods below, but first let’s consider what this means. There is no such thing as a negative calorie – a calorie is a unit of heat and it cannot be negative. So when people talk about negative calorie foods, this just means a food whose calorie level is low enough that it takes more energy to eat and digest it than the food contains.
For example, if you consider water to be a food, then cold water is certainly a negative calorie food. It contains no calories at all and the body has to expend energy to bring it up to blood temperature. So every time we drink a glass of cold water we burn up a couple of calories and lose a little weight. But there are very few foods like this. Most foods that are on the list do not really use more calories than they add, or if they do the effect is negligible … until you remember that at the same time the body expends energy just to keep alive and breathing. Celery for example does not give us enough calories to cover both the energy that it takes to digest it, plus the energy that we expend even when we are doing nothing. So that is why people call it a negative calorie food.
Negative calorie foods are most attractive to anorexics. A negative calorie diet would obviously result in starvation in the long term and nutritional deficiencies can occur surprisingly quickly. The calories burnt usually come from muscle mass, and the result is debility and wasting.
A more healthy way to use a negative calorie diet is as a form of fasting or detox. It is something you can do for one to three days right after the Christmas season or another time when you have been eating a over-rich diet. Provided you are otherwise healthy it can be a great way to clean out the system. However it is still best to take medical advice before attempting this.
If you decide to use a negative calorie detox, keep the following points in mind:
1. It is never a good idea to eat huge quantities of one type of food, especially fruits. A lot of foods contain substances that can be damaging if consumed to excess. For example, the acid in grapefruit and pineapple can damage your stomach lining. Other foods put an excessive burden on the liver or may cause diarrhea. So try to use all the different foods in small quantities.
2. Do not spend all day eating. You will just become bloated and feel sick. If you are only doing this for a couple days, you should not feel too hungry. Plan four or five salad meals each day, and let your digestion rest at other times.
3. You will feel more satisfied if you eat slowly and chew your food thoroughly. You will also use more calories that way. So if the foods can be eaten raw, that will be more effective than cooking them. Foods like carrots and beets will also be more satisfying if you eat them grated.
4. Schedule time when you do not have any important commitments. As with fasting or any kind of detox, you may suffer some uncomfortable symptoms including headaches, tiredness, depression and irritability. If these become severe, stop the diet and see a doctor.
5. When you end the detox, plan a gradual return to normal eating.
If all the above points are checked and passed, let’s move on to the list of foods.

Often things take a bit of time to take affect. Sometimes you do all the right things but see no results and change tactics, don’t do that ride it out instead.
When people start a new diet they get excited do all the right things and then in the first week they lose 5 pounds or so and are very excited with the results, then the next week comes and the only lose a pound or nothing at all and discouragement sets in.
You hear a lot about yoyo dieting, gaining and losing weight only to gain it back again and often this will happen because people become discouraged and don’t let the changes that they are making to take affect and change to a different type of diet. Although our bodies are complex and in many ways can change very very quickly, losing weight does not tend to be one of these things
If you eat all of the right foods and get the exercise that you need and then at the end of the week you have not lost any weight is it becasue the diet and exercise are not working? probably not. Often when you make big changes your body will start a bit of a backlash. You will retain water, your metabolism will slow down in fear of starvation or your body will just not have caught up with the changes. Often the diet and exercise changes that you make will not show up for a couple or even three weeks. Many of the bog diet companies know this. Jenny Craig only has you weigh in once a week as does Weight Watchers and Weight Watchers cautions people not to weigh themselves at all during the week. As you have probably noticed beofre your weight will fluctuate all over the place during a single day so any changes that you see are very hard to predict from week to week even.
Stay on a course doing the right things and give yourself at least a few months to see if you are tending in the right direction. Do not just take the scale into account but also look at how you feel, how your health is, how your energy is and how well you are sleeping. What you want out of any diet and exercise program is to improve all areas of your life, not just the bathroom scale

Sometimes we can all fall into a rut. Today I am thinking a lot about eating, with the kids leftover candy sitting on my desk but I do not feel like I have much to say. So I will leave the inspiration to others today and tell you what I have seen today around the internet that is interesting and motivating to me.
Burn The Fat Blog: Is starvation mode a myth?- No! It’s very real and here is the proof
Tom Venuto talks about how some people do not understand or believe that if you ratchet down the amount of food that you eat that your metabolism will slow down and reduce your energy as well as your fat burning ability
Fitness & Health with Dr. Gabe Mirkin: Protein: How Much Do You Need?
Dr Gabe Mirkin is a favorite of mine because on his radio show he is never afraid to give people advice, he has some good ideas about how to get a little more protein in and how athletes do need more protein then sedentary people.

The second episode for the Biggest Loser this season was a two hour episode just like the first episode was. We get a bit of a recap and then watched as the two main teams worked out and the Black Team headed by Jillian Michaels had their first weight in. These guys are all working out really hard and in fine Biggest Loser form we are getting to see punishment.
One of the great things about the Biggest Loser is the little short tips that you run into during the show. One of the guys was eating next to nothing and got beat up for it. If you do not eat your body goes into a starvation mode and you will not be able to raise your metabolism to lose weight. Kim Lyons also brought up the idea of eating ground turkey instead of ground beef. Turkey is high in protein and very low in fat so it is a great alternative whether ground up or just cooked instead of steak or chicken.
I want to skip the other stuff for now from the show because I think the real highlight in the two hours was the read and blue teams finally seeing the cast-offs, the black team coached by Jillian Micheals.
“strong like a tidal wave” I have no idea who used this line as it came so fast but one of Jillian Michaels people used this term to discribe one of his team mates. This was the day that the red and blue teams got to meet the black team. As happened last season the read and blue teams did not feel that the black team deserved to be there but just because they did not see them does not mean that the black team was not working hard. The problem last season was that all of the bonding that went on meant the the people working out from home were looked at as infiltrators and were never really accepted…we will see how this season goes as there are now three pretty evenly matched teams.

In the first part of this article Tom Venuto told us how fat cells are created and live. In this second part Tom tells us how to shrink them and lose weight.
When the FFA’s are released from the fat cell, the fat cell shrinks and that’s why you look leaner when you lose body fat – because the fat cell is now smaller. A small or “empty” fat cell is what you’re after if you want the lean, defined look.
It was once believed that the number of fat cells could not increase after adulthood, only the size of the fat cells could increase (or decrease). We now know that fat cells can indeed increase both in size (hypertrophy) and in number (hyperplasia) and that they are more likely to increase in number at certain times and under certain circumstances, such as 1) during late childhood and early puberty, 2) During pregnancy, and 3) During adulthood when extreme amounts of weight are gained
Some people are genetically predisposed to have more fat cells than others and women have more fat cells than men. An infant usually has about 5 – 6 billion fat cells. This number increases during early childhood and puberty, and a healthy adult with normal body composition has about 25 to 30 billion fat cells. A typical overweight adult has around 75 billion fat cells. But in the case of severe obesity, this number can be as high as 250 to 300 billion!
The average size (weight) of an adult fat cell is about 0.6 micrograms, but they can vary in size from 0.2 micograms to 0.9 micrograms. An overweight person’s fat cells can be up to three times larger than a person with ideal body composition.

Many people ask me what the best food for losing weight are and I have to day that there are a few things that I like to tell people before I answer that questions. First there is how your body uses energy and then there is how to make sure that your body does not store fat.
First of all your body is a machine that needs to use a base sugar called glycogen to function. Glycogen is a broken down version of sugar and is not eaten by you but instead is broken down in your body so that you have the energy available to your muscles that they need.
So now the important question is what does your body need to create this glycogen stuff? The answer is that your body can use anything, protein, carbohydrates or fat to create glycogen but it uses the items in the most efficient form possible. Your body will use simple sugars first, then carbohydrates, then fats or protein. This single fact is why the Atkins diet works best over the short term but now in the long term. If your body does not have access to carbohydrates it will in a pinch use the fats in your body to create glycogen for your muscles and at the same time your body will start slowing your metabolism as it will think it is going into a starvation mode.
So now we know why Atkins works in losing weight for the first couple of weeks but after this usually people have trouble losing weight on Atkins and that is because your body thinks that it is starving and slows down. There is an alternative and that is to stop your diet after a few days and then move to another diet a few days after going off of that diet.
If you use this cycling method of dieting you will be able to lose weight consistently and not have to go through the expense, and vitamin needs of Atkins. Eating a higher protein diet as well as having the fruits and vegetables needed to stay healthy is the best fat loss diet possible
The two diets that I know of that use this cycling method of changing your diet after a few days is the Body for life system which has six days on the diet and one day off the diet. The other diet that uses cycling is fat loss For Idiots which uses 9 days on the diet and then 4 days off the diet.
The most important thing here as you can see is to use confusion to your body in your diet.
