If you are over fifty it is natural for you to become less active and lazier than you were in your younger days. However, just because your youthful exuberance is no longer there doesn’t mean that you should be afraid of doing rigorous workouts.

A common pattern I find among women and old people alike is that of avoiding strength training workouts, usually because they either feel they cannot bear the pressure of such heavy workouts or they believe that strength training is not worth the trouble. However, if you are young at heart, you should be able to do strength training workouts no matter how old you are.

Some people believe that for them, life begins at 40. Some even think that life begins at 50. Yes, life indeed begins at 40 – it begins to deteriorate. As you reach 40, you start losing your lean muscles mass, and the more lean muscles you lose, the quicker you add fat to your body. Since muscles burns fat, it is important that you stop the process of muscles loss, if you don’t want to become fat and ugly, that is. As a matter of fact, one of the easiest ways to gain lots of lean muscles quickly is by indulging yourself in strength training.

For your information, muscle loss doesn’t just result in weight gain. Muscle loss also makes your body weak and susceptible to injuries. In other words, even if you are not worried about weight gain, you should build muscles through strength training so as to make your body stronger and more energetic.

In simple words, if you want to:

a) Build a strong body

b) Enhance your immune system

c) Strengthen your bones and muscles

d) Relive your youth

e) Stay lean and fit

Then strength training is probably your best option.

While strength training is good enough in itself, I strongly suggest that you also follow a healthy diet to make it even easier for yourself to stay fit. With the combination of diet and exercise, you cannot but stay fit and lean no matter how much you age.

Did I tell you that even if you occasionally indulge in junk food eating, you still won’t gain an ounce of fat because the muscles you acquired from strength training would help you burn off the extra calories gotten from those junk foods.

All in all, you have got more than one reason to start doing strength training workouts. While joining a fitness center is one way to do this, you can achieve equal results from home by using dumbells. In addition, if you are new to strength training, I would also suggest reading a good “how-to” book on the subject.
