drweilLast night as I was flipping around the channels I ran across Larry King on CNN talking to Dr Andrew Weil about health and specifically about the Swine Flu.

For anyone that has not seen or heard Dr Weil, he is a very interesting guy. He is not a big fan of drug companies, is really interested in alternative medicines and therapies and has the research to prove his point. And he really has the hippy look to him.

Anyway Dr Weil mentioned that Astragalus is available in health food stores as a capsule and that he would be taking it starting soon to avoid the Swine Flu (H1N1). Also he was very clear that to avoid any flu that you should do the following:

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after using it.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
  • Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
  • If you do get the flu (or any contagious illness, for that matter), stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.

One other tidbit. Dr Weil told Larry King that he thinks that the Swine Flu will not be as bad as some fear this year but it is a very important test of our systems for a future bird flu or other flu that will likely come along in the next few years.

  1. So far the news is reporting severe cases of H1N1 in people with chronic illnesses. These people may have weakened immune systems from their illness. If you are looking to be as healthy as possible, then make sure you do not for get about your immune system.

Every year most of us increase our intake of vitamin C, that’s good, but we should also increase the L-Carnitine in our system. I also include niacin. L-Carnitine is essential to a healthy immune system.

Above all do not panic or be fearful. Keep your peace. Fear is just as dangerous to your health as H1N1. If you decide to take the shot or not, I would do everything in my power to be as healthy as I can.

  2. Everything I get goes to the lungs. That’s why I’m particularly scared of this Swine flu. I am 75, female, and go to ballroom dances. I can’t wear a mask at these dances. Or? And how would I know if someone was sick if they are at these dances?
Germs are also airborne, as we all know. Is it worse to take the Swine flu shot and Astragalus – or better? Or hope that Astragalus or another natural substance does the job. What other info can you tell me relating to an accommodating immune system? I had a mediastinal cyst, which was benign, located behind the sternum, removed a year ago (they also removed the thymus gland).
