hershey-chocolate-bar.jpgAs just about everyone knows I have a bit of a sweet tooth and am very fortunate that my metabolism allows me to eat some chocolate (my wife says I deserve to be fat).

Anyway we had a bit of a scare this week when there was a recall and fears of salmonella poisoning involving many Hershey products made in Canada. I have grabbed a list that is here but also there is a number on the back that must be between 6417 to 6455 as I have stated below. I am no health official so if you have any real questions on this please call the number below.

A number of popular Hershey chocolate products and candies have been recalled because of fears of salmonella contamination at a Smiths Falls, Ont., plant. Hershey brand chocolate bars, chocolate chips, Oh Henry! bars, Reese Peanut Butter Cups, and Cherry Blossom candies are among the affected products. None of the recalled products were produced for Halloween or Christmas products.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the products.

The recalled chocolate and candy can be identified by date codes found on the back of each package — the affected date codes range from 6417 to 6455. Consumers who have purchased the items in question should contact Hershey at 1-800-468-1714.

  1. A few workers in our area got Salmonella poisoning. It is a good thing that they did not die and they have fully recovered. |

  2. in our place some vegetables have been contaminated with Salmonella. the local health office have been able to react quickly and have those contaminated vegetables taken off immediately from the shelves. at least 20 people have suffered from Salmonella here.

  3. Now I understand why Reeces has just in the last 6 weeks been introduced to our supermarkets in the Uk sales must be dropping in North America.

  4. I visited my brother’s family in NC for xmas.
I ate a Reeses Peanut Butter Cup that afternoon. At 4am I awoke and threw up for about 12hours.
I was so sick, I was literally on the bathroom floor crying.
Every article I have read on the peanut related Salmonella recall never reveals the specific product name of what the sick/deceased victims ate.
I have read that the Hershey company for Reeses has stated 1.29 that they do not buy from the processing plant Peanut Corp. of Amer. (PCA) supposedly linked to the origination of the Salmonella.
Hershey’s Claims Reese Cups Are Safe .. the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups is made in Hershey facilities.
But FDA Says Just Postpone eating the Reeses Peanut Butter Cups.
So what exactly is the FDA saying? Have they specifically investigated this product or what?
I find it hard to believe this product in not connected to the Salmonella outbreak considering how sick I became after eating the Reeses Peanut Butter Cup.

Also as of 1.21.09 Reeses Peanut Butter Frozen Cookie dough has now been added to the FDA list. Is Hershey denying the Peanut Butter Cups b/c they are so popular and the bad publicity would be too damaging?
How much does Hershey lobby our politicians?
It seems that the FDA is delaying their investigation of Hershey Products. Not until the end of January (after much media frenzy had quited down) was their “Rees’es Peanut Butter” dough added to the FDA list. In 2007 Hershey’s Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Sundae Dasher was found to contain Salmonella.
One wonders how a “Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup” Topping can contain Salmonella but the Peanut Butter Cup itself doesn’t? Perhaps because the Peanut Butter Cup Bar is far more popular to consumers. Probably the biggest cash cow for the company. Salmonella Exposure of this item would surely hit their wallet. What’s horrific is that since 2007 product exposure what exactly has Hershey done to protect it’s consumers?

    As of 1.21.09 Recall
Best Brands Corp. 1.5 oz ZT Custom Reese’s® Peanut Butter Precut Frozen Cookie Dough, 20.25 lb case, 216 cookies per case (Item #4369-01)

2007 Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Sundae Dasher contained salmonella.
