I had not heard of this until today but a few years ago there was a diet created by General Motors called the GM Diet to get or at least keep the employees in shape (to bad it didn’t help the bottom line) and this diet was really popular even outside of General Motors.

The GM Diet is one of those older diets that seems to be based on heresay and fads more than anything and you can see this in the strange ideas about drinking certain alcohols and the idea of eating until you are “stuffed” can not be at all good over the long term. Also funny is an all meat day as opposed to the fat loss 4 idiots all fruit day.

The GM Diet was originally created by GM and only for the employees and families. Somehow GM (biggest company in the world at the time) got a grant from the FDA and the Department of Agriculture to create this. Johns Hopkins was involved and the diet was approved and launched in 1985.

This GM Diet program is designed for a target weight loss of 10-17 lbs per week. It will also improve your attitudes and emotions because of its cleansing systematic effects.

This can also be used over and over again although I am not to sure about the food balance as it seems to be extreme in a few ways. The GM Diet is designed to flush your system of impurities and give you a feeling of well being. The plan is designed to lose you 10 pounds or so in a week. Has anyone tried and found this?

GM Diet Plan

During the first seven days you must abstain from all alcohol. You must drink 10 glasses of water each day on the GM Diet

Day One All fruits except bananas. Your first day will consist of all the fruits you want. It is strongly suggested that you consume lots of melons the first day. Especially watermelon and a loupe. If you limit your fruit consumption to melons, your chances of losing three lbs. on first day are very good.

Day Two
All vegetables. You are encouraged to eat until you are stuffed with all the raw or cooked vegetables of your choice. There is no limit on the amount or type. For your complex carbohydrate, you will start day two with a large baked potato for breakfast. You may top the potato with one pat of butter.

Day Three A mixture of fruits and vegetables of your choice. Any amount, any quantity. No bananas yet. No potatoes today.

Day Four Bananas and milk. Today you will eat as many as eight bananas and drink three glasses of milk. This will be combined with the special soup which may be eaten in limited quantities.

Day Five Today is feast day. You will eat beef and tomatoes. Eat two 10 oz. portions of lean beef. Hamburger is OK. Combine this with six whole tomatoes. On day five you must increase your water intake by one quart. This is to cleanse your system of the uric acid you will be producing.

Day Six Beef and vegetables. Today you may eat an unlimited amount of beef and vegetables. Eat to your hearts content.

Day Seven Today your food intake will consist of brown rice, fruit juices and all the vegetables you care to consume.

Tomorrow morning from the GM Diet you will be 10-17 lbs. lighter than one week ago. If you desire further weight loss, repeat the program again. You may repeat this program as often as you like, however, it is suggested that you are allowed two glasses of white wine in addition to the instructions on the program. You may substitute champagne for white wine. Under no circumstances are you to drink any other alcoholic beverages with the exception of beer which is allowed. Any liquor (bourbon, vodka, rum) is forbidden.

Cream drinks are especially forbidden on the GM Diet. You may have an occasional cordial such as creme de menthe or schnapps, but you must always limit yourself to two drinks.

If you wine, drink only wine that day. If you have beer, drink only beer that day, etc. Alcohol adds empty calories to your diet. However, after the first week on the GM Diet it will help your digestion and settle your stomach.

GM Wonder Soup

The following soup is intended as a supplement to your GM Diet. It can be eaten any time of the day in virtually unlimited quantities. You are encouraged to consume large quantities of this soup.

28 oz, Water, 6 Large Onions, 2 Green Peppers, Whole Tomatoes (fresh or canned), 1 Head Cabbage, 1 Bunch Celery, 4 Envelopes Lipton Onion Soup Mix, Herbs and Flavoring as desired.

GM Diet Additional Notes

Vegetables as may be taken in the form of a salad if desired. No dressing except malt, white or wine vinegar, squeezed lemon, garlic, herbs. No more than one tea spoon of oil on the GM Diet.

You have above a recipe for the wonder soup which can be eaten in unlimited quantities. This soup is a supplement while you are on the program and it should be a pleasure to eat. Not everyone likes cabbage, green peppers, celery etc. This recipe is not inflexible. You may substitute vegetables according to your taste. You may add any vegetables you like: asparagus, peas, corn, turnips, green beans, cauliflower, etc. Try to stay away from beans (lima, pinto, kidney, etc.), however, because they tend to be high in calories even though they are very good for you.

Beverages you may consume while on the GM Diet program :

1. Water (flavored with lemon/lime if desired).
2. Club Soda is OK.
3. Black Coffee. No cream or cream substitute. No sugar or sweetness.
4. Black Tea = Herb or Leaf.
5. Absolutely nothing else except the fruit juices which are part of day seven. No fruit juices before day seven.

How and Why the GM Diet Works

Day One – You are preparing your system for the upcoming program. Your only source of nutrition is fresh or canned fruits. Fruits are nature’s perfect food. They provide everything you could possibly want to sustain life except total balance and variety.

Day Two – Starts with a fix of complex carbohydrates coupled with an oil dose. This is taken in the morning for energy and balance. The rest of day two consists of vegetables which are virtually calorie free and provide essential nutrients and fibre.

Day Three – Eliminates the potato because you get your carbohydrates from the fruits. You system is now prepared to start burning excess pounds. You will still have cravings which should start to diminish by day four.

Day Four – Bananas, milk and soup sound the strangest and least desirable. You’re in for a surprise. You probably will not eat all the bananas allowed. But they are there for the potassium you have lost and the sodium you may have missed the past three days. You will notice a definite weight loss of desire for sweets. You will be surprised how easy this day will go.

Day Five – Beef and tomatoes. The beef is for iron and proteins, the tomatoes are for digestion and fibre. Lots and lots of water purifies your system. You should notice colorless urine today. Your allowance calls for the equivalent of five “quarter ponders”. Do not feel you have to eat all this beef. You must eat the six tomatoes.

Day Six – Similar to day five, Iron and proteins from beef, Vitamins and fibre from vegetables. By now your system is in a total weight loss inclination. There should be a noticeable difference in the way you look today, compared to day one.

Day Seven – Finished off the program like a good cigar used to finish off Victorian meals, except much healthier. You have your system under control and it should thank you for the flushing and cleaning you just gave it.

I am not sure of the value of the GM Diet but go ahead and try this and see if you are pleasantly surprised. Make sure that if you try this that you also let us all know of the results good or bad in the comments below. Maybe GM Diet will me the legacy that General Motors will be remembered for instead?

  1. Can’t wait to start this diet! A friend and I at work are goinng to be doing it together and just had a few questions:

What kind of milk can you drink and can you add the pepper to taste?

  2. I started this yesterday. I really REALLY want coffee…which we can have…i just can’t drink it without some cream and sugar. I drink one cup with one sugar and very little creamer will it affect the whole thing?

  3. Can I eat corn tortillas on day 6? I have to go out for lunch on my day 6 to a Mexican restaurant and they serve vegetable fajitas. Only thing I can eat(hopefully)!! Can I eat the fajitas with corn tortillas?? I can avoid sour cream and cheese.

  4. Question – I am starting today. Says fresh or canned fruit. Tomorrow on the veggie day – it say’s veggies. All I want. Does this have to be fresh or can I cook the veggies? I love all veggies but I don’t like raw veggies so I like to steam them. Is this OK for the diet? I don’t want to defeat the purpose of what I am doing.

  5. Starting tomorrow. Does anyone know if we can eat dehydrated fruits that have nothing added just dried?
    Thanks

  6. okay, honest question…how much does this diet make you poop? i wanna try it, but i don’t wanna spend my life in the bathroom.

    1. I don’t really have that problem. My bf did but he ate like 3 huge bowls of soup. I do however pee every 5 mins, For everyone asking about soup. You start soup day 4 and eat it as much as you want throughout the rest of the diet. Day 4-7.

I’m on day 4 and am down 6lbs. BIG tip easy on the salt I lost 3LBs day one, 3lbs day 2. Then yesterday ate a ton of salt on my veggies and lost 0.

  7. They might call it a fad, unscientific, unbalanced, rediculous diet as much as they want…. let me tell you sister, I came down from 85kgs to 64 kgs few years back with this. Of course in the course of next 5 years i gained back about 5-6 kgs, so what….I can live with that kind of number….I owe it all to the eating pattern change gm diet creates in our minds. I have tried meticulous, disciplined, planned eating patterns for years accompanied by well rounded exercises…..but it did not make me lose a pound. Of course, it built endurance and kept my knees and body fit. I hate when thin people say, ‘dont worry about your , keeping fit is the most important thing…..’ Let me cut the crap. Keeping fit is important but losing is also very very important. so i say to all those thin, planned eaters out there… ‘just speak for yourself… may be someone else wants to lose that extra lbs sooner, may be they have a metabolic disorder which can be only jolted with this kind of a diet, let them give it a shot, just mind your own business and go chew some lettuce…..’

  8. On Day 3, down 4 pounds. The results are as advertised, but I have doubts as to sustainability. First, you’re not burning much excess fat. It’s extremely calorie restrictive, so you’ll probably burn a pound every 2 days, but a majority of the loss will be water (as most calorie restrictive diets are), and stomach/intestinal cleanse. This will return with even a healthy, sensible diet following the GM. I’m hoping for a 10 pound loss, with 4 staying off. I was plateaued, hopefully this is a nice jumpstart to losing again.

    1. Hi I was curious so do you eat the soup everyday? Or just on day 4? It doesn’t really specify. Thanks!

  9. I’m on day 4 and I’ve lost 7lbs already!!! :0) I lost 4lbs on the first day! This clenase/diet is amazing and I’m recommending it to everyone I know! I will be doing this 7 day cleanse/diet the first week of every month until I reach my goal …..36 more lbs to go! :0)

    1. i have a couple questions (if you dont mind) since you did this diet before.
On day 5 it says” breakfast start with braised beef and soup. What is the braised beef? Is the soup the “wonder soup”? I also have heard that you can only have 20 oz total of beef on this day – is that true? Reading the diet it doesn’t make sense cause they say for breakfast you can have braised beef, then lunch a 10 oz hamburger and then dinner another 10 oz hamburger (or i did see the recipe for grilled beef slices). My issue is that i am not a veggie person at all. I only like a few veggies and of course tomatoes aren’t one of them -someone suggested making the tomatoes into like a sauce and then adding the beef… any other suggestions

On day 6 it mentions “vegetable soup” – is that something we make or is there a recipe for this

I am on day 3 and so far 3 lbs down which is great. I am definitely going to do this diet again.

    2. I started today too. This is my second time doing it. The first time I lost a total of 11 pounds and felt amazing!

    3. My husband and I happen to be starting it today as well. I woke up not feeling well today though so not off to the best start.

    4. hi,

  10. glad to see so many diet buddies..my 1st day went off well…had slight craving but was able to control myself…my husband is also doing along with me…but today i’m having problem having vegetables..i can hav salads..but how to cook vegetables without oil..plz suggest guys what all u r having..

    1. Steam your veggies in the microwave. Just add lil water to tupperware and cover, cook about 4 mins. Works great!

    2. hi guys,
i’ve started my diet today. i weigh 150lbs. i did this diet 2 yrs back several times to get back to normal bmi, i’m trying again now as i’m 20lbs away.
      good luck to everyone!
      bye,
      J

  11. I tried this diet a couple weeks ago and lost 8 pounds. It wasn’t hard for me to follow. It put me in a better mood and I lost the craving for a lot of things I would normally eat that weren’t good for me. During the week I was off, I should have watched more of what I was eating so I gained two pounds back. But that’s ok, I expected that. I am now starting round 2 of this diet. For me, it’s a matter of finding the balance when I’m off the diet so that I don’t gain it all back.

      1. walking for about 45 min actually helps. dont run or walk too fast as you might end up being hungry and throw the gm rules out of the window. a stroll will be the right thing

  12. hi guys…i’m starting d diet today onwards..is dere anyone else to accompany me..have high expectations from dis diet plan…hope it works…i’m determined to give it my hundred percent…can v have mango n green grapes….hey guys r u also doing any physical exercises along with d diet…i’m 65 kgs …lets see how much i lose at d end of 7th day…

    1. I am starting today as well!! Does anyone know if you can substitute chicken or another protein for the beef? I too have high expectations of this diet.

      1. I started the diet today too. I am a bit nervous about Day 5 because I do not like tomatoes at all. I wonder if anyone has any suggestions on how I can manage getting tomatoes into the diet.

      1. 2vaGIRL: I would suggest food process the tomatoes into a puree and cook the beef in it like a sauce:)

    2. Hi,am starting today with 58 kg..lets see how much we lose. had watermelon & musk melon for breakfast and lunch 🙂

  13. day 4 & i’ve lost 10 pounds…& i have stayed completely pure to the program…i have another girl at my work that we’re doing it together, & we’ve both lost the same amount…discipline & self-control…if you really want to lose the , don’t drink/eat things that hurt ya before…duh (: blessings!
