One of the keys to losing is to burn more calories than you eat. One way to do this easier is to raise your metabolism and allow your body to burn calories faster

Metabolism is a term that describes the number of calories your body burns each day. It has become a very popular term in the loss community with many people believing that boosting your metabolism is the key to loosing .

While metabolism does not have as big an impact as everyone believes it can still help you burn additional calories each day. That is why in this article I am going to be providing you with five fantastic tips to maximize your metabolism.

CHOOSE FIBER RICH CARBOHYDRATES:- Carbohydrates that are low in fiber are relatively easy for your body to digest and the process does not require very many calories. Contrastingly, fiber rich carbohydrates take longer for your body to digest and the process burns more calories.

Therefore, when choosing your carbohydrates you should go for the healthy, fibre rich options such as fruits, vegetables and grains.

EAT MORE PROTEIN:- Your body burns more calories when digesting protein than it does when breaking down carbohydrates and fats.

Therefore, if your diet contains very little protein eating a little more of this important macronutrient is another way to boost your metabolism.

DO SOME CARDIO:- Performing cardiovascular exercise (such as cycling, jogging and rowing) can increase your metabolism in two ways. First, cardiovascular exercise allows you to burn a considerable amount of calories as you work out. Secondly, it also raises your metabolism for a few hours after you finish working out.

Therefore, by making cardio a regular part of your lifestyle you can notably increase your metabolism.

LIFT SOME WEIGHTS:- Weight lifting increases the amount of muscle you have. Your body uses around six calories a day to maintain each pound of muscle mass and two calories a day to maintain each pound of fat.

Therefore, the more muscle you have the more calories you will burn on a daily basis and the higher your metabolism will be.

STAY HYDRATED:- If you are dehydrated your body may not be unable to perform some important functions. This may then lead to a reduction in your metabolism as your body starts to use less calories.

Therefore, by drinking water at regular intervals during the day to stay hydrated you can ensure that you maximise your metabolism.

By following the tips listed in this article you can give your metabolism a much needed boost and increase the amount of calories you burn on a daily basis. Although a faster metabolism will give you this benefit there is a limit to the amount of you can lose this way. If you are consuming too many calories it will not matter whether you maximise your metabolism or not.

However, if you perfect your diet first, boosting your metabolism can be a highly effective loss aid.

  1. Wow, this sounds like an amazing way to increase metabolism! What are your suggestions on maybe learning self-control on not eating fatty, and un-healthy foods that are around the house? I live with my family who have high metabolism rates, and they can eat to high heaven and not gain an ounce, however, I, somehow have trouble. /:( So, we have foods such as lasagna, cookies, breads, etc. etc. etc. around for the people who can eat them, and I somehow can’t help but eat them too, since they’re sitting right there. What should I do?

  2. As a person with MS (over 10 years now) it is difficult to do steps 3 & 4, my question is this; Would increasing 1,2 and 5 make up for not being able to do 3 and 4 very much?

  3. For a carb rich food, rice isn’t too bad compared to bread or pasta. It takes your body a longer time to digest it than pasta or bread.

A couple times I’ve tried low carb diets for a month at a time, and I just started it again a couple days ago. No rice, cereal, bread, pasta, etc. for 6 days a week. The first few days are tough, but you get used to it. Breakfast especially is a big adjustment. I can lose about 15 lbs while gaining muscle (since I’m increasing my protein intake), so I guess I lose around 15 to 20lbs of fat in a month when i do this diet.

I can usually keep it off, but I suffered an injury playing hockey a while back that is just healing now, so I’ve been inactive and I started eating worse (funny how one bad habit leads to another). But I’m determined to get back into my pre-injury shape and hit the ice again!

I haven’t started yet, but I plan to track my progress on my blog (which clicking my name will link to).

  4. Wow, great tips! The only is I don’t think I can cut down on my carbohydrates…Can you suggest an alternative food for rice?
