Biohacking is a natural progression in the way that we try to supplement, test, and track to find ways to improve ourselves in all ways. The most common ways that we try to improve ourselves are strength, endurance, mental acuity, and longevity. Are these your goals as well as mine? Well then biohacking may be a strategy that you might want to look at.
What is Biohacking?
The core of the biohacking experience is to track everything. Once you are tracking everything about how you eat, sleep, exercise and anything else then you can test different protocols and then you can see exactly what the results were of the tests.
The only danger really, and it is a very real danger, is that we don’t know the long term effects of some of the more fringe supplements are.
The biohacker that I follow most these days is David Asprey. Dave writes as the Bulletproof Executive and has lots of info on his site but one of the great pieces of info I believe as an intro to this is the following presentation by David.
I know it is almost an hour long but this talk that David Asprey gave was a fantastic intro. Here are some thoughts that I have on the things that he speaks about.
Vitamin D supplementation – This is one of the greatest things you can do for yourself. Anyone that lives in northern or far southern latitudes is likely Vitamin D deficient so doing this one thing will likely help you more than any other supplement.
Effective sleep – David talks in this video about doing things to get deeper, better sleep so that he can sleep less and be more rested. Although it may be difficult to follow exactly what he is talking about the fact is that sleep is one of the great things that you can do to improve your waking life. Tim Ferris (another great biohacker) talks about using supplementation like Magnesium, taking ice cold baths, and exercise an hour before sleep.
Pranayama Breathing – This is a great method for reducing stress and giving your body better energy. This alone is a great way to improve your energy and focus your concentration as well as super for lowering that nagging stress level that you never know how to handle
Grain fed Butter and MCTs – This is one thing that seems crazy but when it is explained by David how he has improved his health by eating a stick of butter everyday and increasing his intake of Coconut oil (high in Medium chain triglycerides).
These are only a few of the things that we learn on this video. There are many more insights on the video and great tips that you an add to your everyday life to improve yourself.
This is only my first of hopefully many posts that will speak to the ideas of biohacking and how we can use the principles in this always changing field of research. It is very important to be aware that biohacking is not all about just supplements but also about timing eating, exercise and types of exercise, as well as the rest, sleep, and stress reduction that can make you a better person.
