I saw this great video on from TedX on how fast food marketing to kids works.

What I really took away from this is the fact that businesses in their pursuit of profits will market hard like we would expect and some of it is really underhanded and really not ethical.

Secondly, as we all know most kids don’t care about nutrition and these big conglomerates are really taking advantage of using the kids to pester parents to buy products that are deadly over time.

There are varying opinions regarding the terms Search Engine Results Page (SERP) and PageRank (PR). Many say that these two are entirely different, independent and are not related with one another while others say they are directly related, as one decreases the other follows and as one improves the other one increases. It doesn’t need to be an expert in SEO to explain the relevance, difference and relation of these two terms. One just got to have an open mind and understand the algorithm that is presented by the Google Corporate Technology.

SERP is listing of Web pages shown or returned by Search Engines (Google in this case) in response to searches made by Internet users. Google shows a list of websites (usually ten per page) that is considered relevant based on the keywords used by the searcher. The first page or top SERP is the most important page of all and this is where every webmaster wants their websites to be presented; to hold a position within the top ten websites that will be listed. Having a rank in this important results page will increase the chances of being visited by Internet users because people searching the Internet seldom go the next page of search results. Here is a useful reference for local marketing masterminds, do visit

So now let’s define what is PageRank or PR. Stated briefly, PR is a trademark of Google, it belongs only to Google and it is used to rank websites to show their importance, quality and popularity in the Internet. Valuation of PR is all about quality links pointing to a certain website. Now there are many reasons why websites link to other websites, it might be there importance, useful content, reference or quality. These links also serve as votes and the more quality backlinks a website acquires from other websites, it is assumed that its PR will be higher. These links will be evaluated by Google and will be used in the computation of a website’s PR.

There are millions of web pages out there, and if you do not know where you rank among the millions and millions of sites, then you are unlikely to grow your traffic and, subsequently, your business. As much as rank matters, however, it also helps to know where you rank within the results of another industry. Are you the top dog or is there someone else out there, who is doing it better, cheaper and more efficiently? Once you know where the excellence benchmark resides, you can start shooting for it.

In direct mail advertising, this is known as “beating the control.” The goal of every campaign is to usurp the bestselling champion of campaigns and become the new control. Direct mail has been testing several results against each other for years, but the data has not been instantaneous to come by as it is with the SERP tool.

So you’re at the top. Why is it important to keep monitoring the SERP? Well, the Internet is a global marketplace. It is a place, where someone out there is always looking to implement the next best thing. Picking apart the competition is the hallmark of a good business. You should be doing it, and once you’re at the top, you should expect it from the competition. Resting on your laurels will put you on the fast track to falling behind. Staying on top of your competition’s game allows you to continually find new and creative ways for keeping your traffic interested in what you have to offer.

Many websites get so caught up in their SERP ranking that they lose sight of what their own goals are. Being the best is useless if it is in an area that you aren’t actively engaged in. The only way to reach success as a website and as a business is to know what you’re in the game for to begin with. Do not ignore your own pursuits in your effort to get to the top. The SERP is a great tool, but it can’t always save you from misguided desires.
