I have been watching the Biggest Loser since the first night of the first season. It has been a great ride and I have to say that I have learned a lot about struggles, a lot about morivations, and a whole lot about perseverance and seeing the effects of that perseverance.
But I think I am finished with the Biggest Loser now.
There are a lot of kind of negative reasons that I am leaving watching the Biggest Loser but I want to say first that this show is a great inspiration for lots of couch potatoes. But there are some reasons that I do not like the Biggest Loser anymore.
Problems with the Biggest Loser
1. Crazy workout schedule – No one in real life can workout for 6 hours a day like people do on the Biggest Loser. Sure it is important to workout and exercise but there can not be anything healthy about working out for that long. There is not much chance that people can follow through what the show teaches as we all have jobs, urges fed to us by our friends, and heck real life getting in the way.
2. Unrealistic Expectations – Losing 2 or 3 pounds a week is greaqt for almost anyone but on the Biggest Loser you have people competing to lose 100 pounds in 8 weeks or less. This is not something that people can relate to and I feel that a lot of people look at their 20 pound loss as being to small to be a real goal. Look that 20 pound loss over a couple of months will change your life. It is worth doing.
3. Angry Coaching – The Biggest Loser coaches Bob Harper and Jillian Michaels shtick of yelling and berating people working out is getting a bit tiring. The fact is that no one should ever look at their goals and dreams as being something that should be yelled at about. Embrace and be excited.
4. Unhealthy Weight Loss – Losing 100 pounds in 10 or 15 weeks is critically unhealthy and hard to keep up. Your body goes through a point where it has changed too much too fast and you will not have much of a chance of keeping the off. The pressure to keep the down for the contestants must be terrible and We hear about them working out 3 hours a day even at home.
Biggest Loser is Still Relevent
I know the other side of the story. If you are 50 or 100 pounds over it is very difficult to change youor life to lose that . Losing the extra is critical to changing the future health of America and it is important to people, families, even the future of the health system.
You may love the Biggest Loser, I know that I did, but I am starting now to see the Biggest Loser as a show that is starting to do more bad than good. What to me is so much better is a show like X-Weighted here in Canada that shows people losing and changing their lifestyle overall over a period of 6 months. You can learn from that but it is very hard to Learn from the Biggest Loser anymore
