I liked to drink a Coke every day but a couple yeas ago quit altogether with no effect of coca cola avoidance at all. You may have heard that if you drink one can of Coke everyday and you take that out of your diet then you will lose one pound of fat per week which works out to 50 pounds of fat lost in a year.

Healthbolt had the following info about the effect of coca cola and what happens to you when you drink a can of coke.

Have you ever wondered why Coke comes with a smile? It’s because it gets you high. They took the cocaine out almost a hundred years ago. You know why? It was redundant.

Effect of Coca Cola On Your Body

effect of coca colaIn The First 10 minutes: 10 teaspoons of sugar hit your system. (100% of your recommended daily intake.) You don’t immediately vomit from the overwhelming sweetness because phosphoric acid cuts the flavor allowing you to keep it down.

20 minutes: First effect of coca cola on your body. Your blood sugar spikes, causing an insulin burst. Your liver responds to this by turning any sugar it can get its hands on into fat. (Theres plenty of that at this particular moment)

40 minutes: Caffeine absorption is complete. Your pupils dialate, your blood pressure rises, as a response your livers dumps more sugar into your bloodstream. The adenosine receptors in your brain are now blocked preventing drowsiness.

Your body ups your dopamine production stimulating the pleasure centers of your brain. This effect of coca cola is physically the same way heroin works, by the way.

The phosphoric acid binds calcium, magnesium and zinc in your lower intestine, providing a further boost in metabolism. This is compounded by high doses of sugar and artificial sweeteners also increasing the urinary excretion of calcium.

The effect of coca cola caffeine diuretic properties come into play. (It makes you have to pee.) It is now assured that you’ll evacuate the bonded calcium, magnesium and zinc that was headed to your bones as well as sodium, electrolyte and water.

>60 minutes: As the rave inside of you dies down you’ll start to have a sugar crash. You may become irritable and/or sluggish. You’ve also now, literally, pissed away all the water that was in the Coke. But not before infusing it with valuable nutrients your body could have used for things like even having the ability to hydrate your system or build strong bones and teeth.

The effect of Coca Cola After the rush

This will all be followed by a caffeine crash in the next few hours. (As little as two if you’re a smoker.) But, hey, have another Coke, it’ll make you feel better.

Yuck, this is not a nice message on what happens to your body as the can of coke goes through it but it is interesting. Now that we know the effect of coca cola maybe we should see the effect of chocolate next.

In researching some more I have found a few more great articles on the effects of Coca Cola. Livestrong talks about Sperm counts and the effect on stomach acid. Also this great youtube video about the disgusting effects of Coca Cola

    1. I hope non of what i write comes off as rude. I hope you see it as constructive criticism and i hope it is helpful. I am an avid diet coke drinker. I have many of them throughout the day, I drink it more than i drink anything else. Soda will not cause anemia. Being a med student, i have learned about anemia. Anemia is a lack of hemoglobin getting to the blood. It has to do with your body’s ability to produce hemoglobin and properly oxygenate that hemoglobin. Depending on the type of anemia, it could be an iron deficiency. This is a problem i had when i was younger. The best bet is to take ferrous gluconate or other iron supplements OR to incorporate more red meat into her diet. Of course not being an actual doctor YET, i would tell you to have her consult a physicial. Now if she is dehydrated, which is completely possible, she needs to cut back on the soda and drink more water. Gatorade and other drinks of that nature do not count. While they do have electrolytes that the body needs, they also have enough sodium in them that helps dehydrate the body. I know water is bland, BUT it is necessary for our bodies to function correctly. All in all, she should consult a physician, but i suggest fewer soda and more water. I hope this helped. 🙂

    1. That is fine but just think of all those chemicals instead of flushing your body with the nice clean water that it wants and needs.

I drink a coke everyday too but I am not going to fool myself into thinking that it is not bad for me, even a little bit

  1. I drink in excess of 3-4 litre’s a day of coca cola and have been for at least four years. I only had one problem which was the acids in my stomach becoming too much but that could be down to other things.

Other then that im a perfectly healthy human being weighing in at 12 stone and at a height of 6ft 3″.

I find most of this article to be BS apart from the caffience addiction…

  2. Ok, well there goes my worry about the phosphoric acid raping my calcium. I took the time to do a little bit of extra research and found this http://preventdisease.com/news/articles/soda_may_not_hurt_bones.shtml

Ya, so much for that. Turns out that soda’s (Coke) doesn’t effect your bones and teeth at all, unless the soda drinks you are taking compensate for the calcium rich drinks you’d normally have like milk. But as I mentioned in my previous comment, that is not my case (again, I drink plenty of milk, and you should too.)

Before anyone attempts to refute this, just read the link I posted before you do so. No real studies were done to prove this, it was just ASSUMED due to the known fact of phosphorus binding to minerals like Calcium, Zinc, Mg, etc.

    Well, can anyone say DEBUNKED.

    1. I don’t think we should just wait and stop unhealthy habit until there’s a scientific proof for this, coca cola is s such an example. We have to make our own decision. Anyway, excerise is the top priority I think we should do it in our life.

  3. i drink about 5-6L a day for the last 8 years or so and i have gone 2 months with out it and felt fine and well drinking 6L a day i didnt gain more then 5 pounds in 3 years im still 145 pounds and im 18 and i have not been sick in more then 2 years

  4. Am the Same as Phil L .. Drink 2 litres a day and i dont have any problems , look after my teeth eat healthly and i would say am under lol though sometimes i do get annoyied if i dont have any

i would say am addicted to it

  5. a mi papa le dio un paro cardiaco ya que el se tomaba 5 latas al dia de coca-cola y es por eso que la odio………………………………….

    gracias…………………………..

  6. THERE WERE SOME ONE WHO GOT KILLED BY COCA COLA AND SHE WANTED TO DIE READING A BOOK CALLED MUFFY AND FLUFFY AND WHILE SHE WAS DRINKING COCA COLA.?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

  7. thank for the information soooo much it really did help me on my research paper for my sciense fair project!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. Although they might be overexagerating its a good thing because if they are putting people off Coca-Cola they are doing good. I think that soft-drinks are bad in general and i stopped drinking them last year after learning more about them. And for those out there who say they drink heaps of coke with no side affects, well just becacause you cant see them doesn’t mean there not there.

  9. Actually lots of people drink 2 liters of Coke a day. There is the sugar high you get from it as well as a lot of caffeine issues.

Go to a 7-11 and you will see a lot of people that are not fat walking out with super big gulps, they aren’t healthy but they may not realize it either

  10. Thankyou for the information, however much of it is very inaccurate.

“In The First 10 minutes: 10 teaspoons of sugar hit your system. (100% of your recommended daily intake.) ”

    – this article is talking about a CAN of coke – it only contains 35g of sugar, which is just over 30% of the recommended daily intake. NOT 100%.

“Your body ups your dopamine production stimulating the pleasure centers of your brain. This is physically the same way heroin works, by the way.”

    – again, a little bit of scare-mongering here, there are MANY differrent things that up your dopamine production stimulating the pleasure centres of your brain. Dopamine is your brains own mechanism for ‘rewarding’ itself. The most common thing that ‘stimulates’ dopamine production is having sex. But do you hear health gurus telling you not to have sex because it has the same effect on your brain as heroin does?…I think not.

I’m not saying coke is GOOD for you by any means, but I’ve drunk in excess of 2 liters of coke every day for about the last 7 years, and I’ve had absolutley no bad effects from it. I look after my teeth, and they’re fine. I’m not even slightly over, and I dont suffer from any forms of hyper-activity or drowsiness or anything like that.

But yea, obviously I’m excessive in how much I drink, but it just goes to show that it’s usually a COMBINATION of unhealthy lifestyle habits that cause people to have problems. NOT just coke. Trying to scare people into believing that coke is as bad for you as drinking bleach…is not the way.

  11. Thank you for the information. I am addicted to coca cola, I drink 1 – 2 cans a day. Started a few years back when I was having stomach problems due to a medicine I was taking. The syrup in coke helped me to keep my food down. I drink it with ice therefore it can’t be totally dehydrating my system. I no longer take the medicine that made me sick but still drink coke. I stopped during lent this year but started on Easter again. During the period I stopped drinking Coke I would get bad headaches and ended up drinking coffee. I don’t think Coke has caused me to gain , I am active – 126lbs and 5’6″ .
