I had not heard of this until today but a few years ago there was a diet created by General Motors called the GM Diet to get or at least keep the employees in shape (to bad it didn’t help the bottom line) and this diet was really popular even outside of General Motors.

The GM Diet is one of those older diets that seems to be based on heresay and fads more than anything and you can see this in the strange ideas about drinking certain alcohols and the idea of eating until you are “stuffed” can not be at all good over the long term. Also funny is an all meat day as opposed to the fat loss 4 idiots all fruit day.

The GM Diet was originally created by GM and only for the employees and families. Somehow GM (biggest company in the world at the time) got a grant from the FDA and the Department of Agriculture to create this. Johns Hopkins was involved and the diet was approved and launched in 1985.

This GM Diet program is designed for a target weight loss of 10-17 lbs per week. It will also improve your attitudes and emotions because of its cleansing systematic effects.

This can also be used over and over again although I am not to sure about the food balance as it seems to be extreme in a few ways. The GM Diet is designed to flush your system of impurities and give you a feeling of well being. The plan is designed to lose you 10 pounds or so in a week. Has anyone tried and found this?

GM Diet Plan

During the first seven days you must abstain from all alcohol. You must drink 10 glasses of water each day on the GM Diet

Day One All fruits except bananas. Your first day will consist of all the fruits you want. It is strongly suggested that you consume lots of melons the first day. Especially watermelon and a loupe. If you limit your fruit consumption to melons, your chances of losing three lbs. on first day are very good.

Day Two
All vegetables. You are encouraged to eat until you are stuffed with all the raw or cooked vegetables of your choice. There is no limit on the amount or type. For your complex carbohydrate, you will start day two with a large baked potato for breakfast. You may top the potato with one pat of butter.

Day Three A mixture of fruits and vegetables of your choice. Any amount, any quantity. No bananas yet. No potatoes today.

Day Four Bananas and milk. Today you will eat as many as eight bananas and drink three glasses of milk. This will be combined with the special soup which may be eaten in limited quantities.

Day Five Today is feast day. You will eat beef and tomatoes. Eat two 10 oz. portions of lean beef. Hamburger is OK. Combine this with six whole tomatoes. On day five you must increase your water intake by one quart. This is to cleanse your system of the uric acid you will be producing.

Day Six Beef and vegetables. Today you may eat an unlimited amount of beef and vegetables. Eat to your hearts content.

Day Seven Today your food intake will consist of brown rice, fruit juices and all the vegetables you care to consume.

Tomorrow morning from the GM Diet you will be 10-17 lbs. lighter than one week ago. If you desire further weight loss, repeat the program again. You may repeat this program as often as you like, however, it is suggested that you are allowed two glasses of white wine in addition to the instructions on the program. You may substitute champagne for white wine. Under no circumstances are you to drink any other alcoholic beverages with the exception of beer which is allowed. Any liquor (bourbon, vodka, rum) is forbidden.

Cream drinks are especially forbidden on the GM Diet. You may have an occasional cordial such as creme de menthe or schnapps, but you must always limit yourself to two drinks.

If you wine, drink only wine that day. If you have beer, drink only beer that day, etc. Alcohol adds empty calories to your diet. However, after the first week on the GM Diet it will help your digestion and settle your stomach.

GM Wonder Soup

The following soup is intended as a supplement to your GM Diet. It can be eaten any time of the day in virtually unlimited quantities. You are encouraged to consume large quantities of this soup.

28 oz, Water, 6 Large Onions, 2 Green Peppers, Whole Tomatoes (fresh or canned), 1 Head Cabbage, 1 Bunch Celery, 4 Envelopes Lipton Onion Soup Mix, Herbs and Flavoring as desired.

GM Diet Additional Notes

Vegetables as may be taken in the form of a salad if desired. No dressing except malt, white or wine vinegar, squeezed lemon, garlic, herbs. No more than one tea spoon of oil on the GM Diet.

You have above a recipe for the wonder soup which can be eaten in unlimited quantities. This soup is a supplement while you are on the program and it should be a pleasure to eat. Not everyone likes cabbage, green peppers, celery etc. This recipe is not inflexible. You may substitute vegetables according to your taste. You may add any vegetables you like: asparagus, peas, corn, turnips, green beans, cauliflower, etc. Try to stay away from beans (lima, pinto, kidney, etc.), however, because they tend to be high in calories even though they are very good for you.

Beverages you may consume while on the GM Diet program :

1. Water (flavored with lemon/lime if desired).
2. Club Soda is OK.
3. Black Coffee. No cream or cream substitute. No sugar or sweetness.
4. Black Tea = Herb or Leaf.
5. Absolutely nothing else except the fruit juices which are part of day seven. No fruit juices before day seven.

How and Why the GM Diet Works

Day One – You are preparing your system for the upcoming program. Your only source of nutrition is fresh or canned fruits. Fruits are nature’s perfect food. They provide everything you could possibly want to sustain life except total balance and variety.

Day Two – Starts with a fix of complex carbohydrates coupled with an oil dose. This is taken in the morning for energy and balance. The rest of day two consists of vegetables which are virtually calorie free and provide essential nutrients and fibre.

Day Three – Eliminates the potato because you get your carbohydrates from the fruits. You system is now prepared to start burning excess pounds. You will still have cravings which should start to diminish by day four.

Day Four – Bananas, milk and soup sound the strangest and least desirable. You’re in for a surprise. You probably will not eat all the bananas allowed. But they are there for the potassium you have lost and the sodium you may have missed the past three days. You will notice a definite weight loss of desire for sweets. You will be surprised how easy this day will go.

Day Five – Beef and tomatoes. The beef is for iron and proteins, the tomatoes are for digestion and fibre. Lots and lots of water purifies your system. You should notice colorless urine today. Your allowance calls for the equivalent of five “quarter ponders”. Do not feel you have to eat all this beef. You must eat the six tomatoes.

Day Six – Similar to day five, Iron and proteins from beef, Vitamins and fibre from vegetables. By now your system is in a total weight loss inclination. There should be a noticeable difference in the way you look today, compared to day one.

Day Seven – Finished off the program like a good cigar used to finish off Victorian meals, except much healthier. You have your system under control and it should thank you for the flushing and cleaning you just gave it.

I am not sure of the value of the GM Diet but go ahead and try this and see if you are pleasantly surprised. Make sure that if you try this that you also let us all know of the results good or bad in the comments below. Maybe GM Diet will me the legacy that General Motors will be remembered for instead?

  1. hi!!! i’m on day 5 feeling pretty good!!! but want to know if ,brown rice tomato (6) a piece of chicken is ok on this day

  2. On day two and I’ve lost 3 lbs already! Weight today, 129! The best feeling I have so far is not being bloated!!

  3. OK. I started this today & am already “cleansing” after just pineapple & grapes for breakfast!! Oh my! Weight today 132.

    1. I also started today as well. I don’t think I’ve ever eaten this much fruit in one day = ) Do you know if we can eat the soup on any day?

      1. I also started today! Day 1 is hard! It says that soup is added on day 4. However many people have written that they ate it throughout. But according to what is listed it starts on Day 4!

  4. I started the GM diet on Monday at 126.4 lbs when I weighed in the morning. I’m on day 5 (beef and tomatoes) and so far I’ve lost 7 lbs. I’ve been very strict in following the diet to a T. Monday I had apples, watermelon, and grapefruit, Tuesday I had tons of squash/zucchini and made a potato casserole with zucchini/squash/red bell peppers to get my potato in in the morning without it tasting horrible. Wednesday I had green beans, watermelon, apples, and a plum. I thought wednesday would be horrible, but it wasn’t too bad. I had 5 bananas and the 3 cups of skim milk – no soup needed.

Overall the diet has been pretty easy – I haven’t felt hungry, light headed, or dizzy. I drink about 3 liters of water with it every day. In my opinion day 5 (today) is the worst because I’m finding it hard to eat 5 whole tomatoes today. I tried getting creative and made a spaghetti sauce with a couple of cans of diced tomatoes and 96/4 extra lean beef.

Anyone have any comments on whether the stays off or not?

    1. Hi I began this on thurs. I am on the banana and milk day. I eat the soup when I need it haven’t yet today though. Even though I have cheated and had a few beers. I am down 7lbs. But I am heavy already. I was just wondering Natalie what were your final results?

  5. I started this diet (I hate referring to things as a “diet”) on Sunday. Today is my “beef and veggie” day. Nothing beats having a nice juicy steak for breakfast. This has been amazing for me. I ate somewhat healthy before, but this has been so much easier! No measuring, no watching the clock to make sure I am eating every 2 to 3 hours. I am loving this! The first couple of days I was really tired, but not so much yesterday or today. I do kickboxing 3 days a week and training 3 days a week. I am going to continue this plan next week, but take my pre-workout energy drink (which I did not take this week) and I could tell I didn’t have as much energy during my workouts. Today, (day 6) I put my jeans on and I was able to use the next smaller belt notch! My husband has even seen a difference in how I look.

  6. I started this diet on monday. It is now thursday and I am down 10lbs already. I have not had the soup yet and I do not starve myself. I eat a TON of fruits and veggies in all sorts of different ways (veggie stir fry, steamed, raw, etc.) and I am loving this diet. For workouts all I did was walk a lot of stairs the first day that we have at my work. Then I started walking on the treadmill. I walked 1 1/2 miles wearing a sauna suit and I feel amazing. We will see where I am at when this is done, only 3 more days!

  7. Hello All, I started GM Diet Oaln on last sunday and today is my fifth day.
Today is a feast day but for me being veggie I hv enjoyed rice after full four days.
Banana/Milk day was the tough day for me… I had loose motions in the night…
I am not checking my everyday and keeping it suspense for myself.
Anyone please tell me if I can avoid or put less onions in the wonder soup ?
May I have sweet potato on vegetable day ?
I have avoided beer or wine on all these five days.
But anyone had beer and wine and still lost the ??
I do walk about 4 kms a day but hv stpopped since I started the diet plan.
Is it okay to work-out or walk during these 7 days.
I will let you all know how much weigh i lost after 7 days.

    1. I changed up the soup for sure because I do NOT like the tecture of onions…I used 3 tomatoes, the water, 3 packs of soup mix, 1 large onion, 1 large green pepper, corn, green beans, carrots and then just added pepper for taste. I haven’t tried it yet, my boyfriend has and he loved it..so I get to have it in about an hour for my lunch on veggie day! Day two is going much better than Day one…didn’t realize how much fruit can really be too much for me! I was craving veggies like CRAZY and the baked potato this morning was like gold! I did lose 3.7 lbs already though!

  8. Has anyone done this diet more than just the 7 days? I need a big kick start after a long month of February! I was hoping to do this for 14 days then hop on the 17 day diet wagon again before going back ot the Church of Weight Watchers.

  9. I wonder if anyone here has tried it for a longer period of time? Any gain after this diet? I mean, I am going to continue to eat healthy after it but just wonder about long term results? I’ve heard that it’s just another fad diet so I’m not going to count on it as a loss tool but more of a “cleansing” tool. I would like to hear from the people that have tried it a while ago and their success with it in regards to long term?

  10. I started the gm diet on sunday. Its day 4 and I have lost 5 lbs. Not going to lie, the first three days were brutal but its getting easier.

    1. Yeah! I agree! Day 3 is way more manageable….It’s day 3 for me….and I’m getting through it….I try to get myself excited about what I get to eat the next day….
With this diet I see the MAJOR benefits…not just loss, but healthy eating and preparation of food….you are more conscience of what you are putting in your mouth and it also teaches you to be more creative with the natural food that GOD put on the Earth for us to eat!
I’m definitely done with the “prepared” meals…..I’d rather cook!!!!

  11. I am starting tomorrow! I just have a question, can I still take my daily vitamins? I take a multi and a fish oil pill along with amino acids before I workout. I am training to do my first 5K also, so just in the beginning of the training, so it shouldn’t take too much energy to get through the workouts. I am very excited and know I can do this cleanse…I am a little worried about the banana and tomatoes…but I think I read in the comments I can freeze the bananas and make a shake with them and the milk and I can cook the tomatoes with my beef? I sure hope so! Any help would be great! I hope this works so I can then follow a healthy diet for a couple of weeks then try it again with my friends if it works 🙂

    1. This recipe is from gmdietworks.com
Banana Shake Recipe for Day 4

      Ingredients:
      •2 bananas, sliced
      •2 glasses skim milk
      •2 glasses crushed ice

      Procedure:

In a blender, mix all ingredients until a creamy, frothy shake is formed. No sugar is required as the flavor is already naturally sweet. Serves 2.

      1. Thanks! I think that will really help me on day 4!! Starting day one today…sitting at my desk eating bunches of watermelon and water with lemon 🙂

      2. MMmmmmmmm that sounds delicous!!!!! I start day 4 tomorrow!!!!! Can’t wait…

      3. I am afraid of day 4, I already have a lot of stuff planned to do that day so I don’t think about being hungry…

      1. Thanks, still didn’t have an answer for that, so I just took my vitamin B to get some extra energy 🙂

  12. After day 4, my husband has lost 6 1/2 lbs, I have lost one pound. I was down 2 lbs yesterday but up one this morning. My husband is really happy with the results but I am a little discouraged. I have followed the diet exactly and have been incorporating excercise. I do feel better though, I am going to stick it out and repeat again next week. Is anyone else had the same result?

    1. Today is day 3 for me…..I got on the scale like an idiot and I saw that I lost 2lbs. I had a higher goal in my head….but it says after day 3 your body is ready to burn the fat…..so can’t wait until the AM to see!!!

    2. I have not had real good results and have followed it, This is my day 7 and have only lost 2 pounds. I had put on after day 4 ad 5. Did not cheat!! I do admit that I am very confused about the soup…just when can you eat it??? Can’t wait to get on the scale tomorrow and have lost 8 pounds!!!

  13. This worked for me and I can never lose . I started at 140 and as of this morning on day 7 I was 130…. So pleased and feel accomplished!! But I am scared about what to do now!! How am I suppose to eat. Meat, carbs?… I plan on trying it again in a few days so maybe just satisfy my cravings until then…. Meaning French vanilla coffee creamer and some vino!! Good luck all…. Ps I didn’t have the soup until 4th day and only had more today… It is delicious !!

  14. So I started the diet on Wednesday and went the whole day just eating fruit, until night time when one of my friends made pasta. So I decided to start again on Thursday, and I made it through Thursday and Friday with no cheating. The only thing is that yesterday morning I started eating my potato and started to feel really sick and on the way to a work meeting I threw up. I kept going with the diet and I’m on day 3 now, and I keep getting a weird feeling in my stomach/chest. I’m not really sure what to do. Any suggestions?

    1. More water?? I got sick on the second day with all the veggies… I think it was all the toxins leaving aka caffeine withdrawal for me but I nearly fainted and I puked

      1. I drank coffee black….so nasty….but when you are used to it…you gotta have the java!

    2. I felt really sick on day two! It takes a lot for me to throw up but I Felt really close on this day- I would say its from the caffeine for me too because I normally drink so much of it but after not using cream I dont like it. I noticed a huge difference in my on this day?

  15. Hello,

I was wondering what i can subsitute in place of the bananas, I am highly allergic to bananas. But I would really like to try this.

    Thank you

    1. I think it said potassium intake was the purpose for all of the bananas. So, I think kiwi might do the trick. Not sure, just a suggestion.

  16. I am doing this with a coworker- we started on Monday. We are on day 5 and I am down 6.2 lbs and she is done 6 lbs! It was definitely tough the 2nd and 3rd day but if you stick with it- you really do feel great by the 5th day and see some loss. You can have the soup all week long but don’t feel like you have to- it is just there if you get hungry. If you eat all the things it tells you too though you really won’t find yourself hungry that much. Definitely will do this again.

  17. I’m on Day 4 and I’ve lost 4.8 lbs so far. I did not eat soup until today, but I’m wondering how Day 5 will be since I’ve been able to eat unlimited quantities of fruits and vegetables until now. I’m also not looking forward to beef for breakfast, but I love tomatoes so that will be good.

  18. I started the GM diet 4 days ago. I am on the beef and tomatoes day and so far it is going GREAT! I am down 6.2 pounds since weighing in. I did not lose anything after my bananas and milk day. I lost 3 pounds after day 1, 1.5 pounds after day 2 and 1.5 pounds after day 3. I love how I feel, and I still seem to have enough energy to workout!

    1. I hate tomatoes too, but I’m going to cook them with my beef to try and “tame” them down. Hope this helps!
