metabolism boosting foods

I have made comments in bold just to highlight some of my own opinions on how to increase metabolism.

Stoke your metabolic fire and burn calories faster with diet-friendly foods and beverages. Post this list on your fridge next to the photo of you in your “skinny jeans” and make a copy to bring with you the next time you shop for groceries.

Just remember: Calories count, portion control rules and there’s no substitute for a well-balanced diet and regular exercise. So get moving!

How to Increase Metabolism

1. Water – A new study seems to indicate that drinking water actually speeds up weight loss and is a great way how to increase metabolism. Researchers in Germany found that subjects of the study increased their metabolic rates (the rate at which calories are burned) by 30 percent after drinking approximately 17 ounces of water.

Water is also a natural appetite suppressant that banishes bloat as it flushes out sodium and toxins. Drinking enough water will also help keep you from mistaking thirst for hunger. So drink up!

Make sure that you are starting your day with a big big glass of water and drink throughout the day not just all at one time.

2. Green Tea – Studies show that green tea extracts boost metabolism and may aid in weight loss. This mood-enhancing tea has also been reported to contain anti-cancer properties and help prevent heart disease. It’s also a trendy drink among health-conscious celebrities.

You may Have already seen my green tea articles but this may be one really fantastic herb and it tastes nice too!

3. Soup – Eat less and burn fat faster by having a bowl of soup as an appetizer or a snack. According to a Penn State University study, soup is a super appetite suppressant because it’s made up of a hunger-satisfying combination of liquids and solids. In the study, women chose one of three 270-calorie snacks before lunch.

Women who had chicken and rice soup as a snack consumed an average of 100 fewer calories than those in the study who opted for a chicken and rice casserole or the casserole and a glass of water.

I used to joke that soup is not a meal but it really does fill you for very few calories and remember that when you eat a food with a lot of taste it really will satisfy.

4. Grapefruit – The grapefruit diet is not a myth. Researchers at Scripps Clinic found that participants who ate half a grapefruit with each meal in a 12-week period lost an average of 3.6 pounds.

The study indicates that the unique chemical properties in this vitamin C-packed citrus fruit reduce insulin levels, which promotes loss and boost metabolism. NOTE: If you are taking medication, check with your doctor about any potentially adverse interactions with grapefruit.

Grapefruit, because of the soft peel is a nice alternative to an apple of orange and study after study of the last 30 years has shown that it can really help burn fat.

5. Apples and Pears – Over women who ate the equivalent of three small apples or pears a day lost more weight on a low-calorie diet than women who didn’t add fruit to their diet, according to researchers from the State University of Rio de Janeiro.

Do you hate cardio and still want to lose weight? This plan may be exactly what you are looking for Check it out now

Fruit eaters also ate fewer calories overall. So next time you need to satisfy a sugar craving, reach for this low-calorie, high-fiber snack. You’ll feel full longer and eat less.

6. Broccoli – Study after study links calcium and loss. Broccoli is not only high in calcium, but also loaded with vitamin C, which boosts calcium absorption. This member of the nutritious cabbage family also has plenty of vitamin A, folate and fiber. And, at just 20-calories per cup, this weight-loss superfood not only fights fat but also contains powerful phytochemicals that boost your immunity and protect against disease.

7. Low-Fat Yogurt – Dairy products can boost weight loss efforts, according to a study in the April issue of Obesity Research. People on a reduced-calorie diet who included three to four servings of dairy foods lost significantly more than those who ate a low-dairy diet containing the same number of calories. Low-fat yogurt is a rich source of -loss-friendly calcium, providing about 450 mg (about half the recommended daily allowance for women ages 19-50) per 8-ounce serving, as well as 12 grams of protein.

As far as superfood go Yogurt is right there. It includes calcium, protein and a ton of other nutrients as well as good bacteria and probiotics for you digestive tract.

8. Lean Turkey – Rev up your fat-burning engine with this bodybuilder favorite. Countless studies have shown that protein can help boost metabolism, lose fat and build lean muscle tissue so you burn more calories. A 3-ounce serving of boneless, skinless lean turkey breast weighs in at 120 calories and provides 26 grams of appetite-curbing protein, 1 gram of fat and 0 grams of saturated fat.

With the price of chicken going up and up these days Turkey has become a great alternative. Remember that Turkey is a little tougher than chicken and the taste is a little different but it is not just for Thanksgiving and Christmas anymore.

9. Oatmeal – This heart-healthy favorite ranks high on the good carb list, because it’s a good source of cholesterol-fighting, fat-soluble fiber (7 grams per 3/4-cup serving) that keeps you full and provides you with the energy you need to make the most of your workouts. Just be sure to choose steel cut or rolled oats, not instant oatmeal, to get your full dose of vitamins, minerals and fiber.

For many years now Pro Bodybuilders have relied on Oatmeal as a staple of their breakfast, it is amazingly high in nutrients.

10. Hot Peppers – Eating hot peppers can speed up and boost metabolism and cool your cravings, researchers at Laval University in Canada found. Here’s why: Capsaicin (a chemical found in jalapeno and cayenne peppers) temporarily stimulates your body to release more stress hormones, which speeds up your metabolism and causes you to burn more calories.

  1. Hi, Im tonning up my ypper body quite nicely, and starting to look good in the mirror, but the problem is my beer belly will not go away!!!!!! Ive tried sit ups etc and diets but it will not leave me, once i can loose the fat around my waist i will be happy, any advise you can give me.

    Thanks
    Jon

    1. Your body is a physics engine. The is stored in you “Beer Belly” because physically this is the easiest place for your body to carry the . Because of this, it is also the LAST place a person will lose from. The only thing I can tell you is to turn up the intensity on your Cardio. Run, a lot. Sit ups build up your ab muscles, but they do NOT get rid of the body fat over top your abs. You have to do 20+minutes of cardio per day to burn some decent body fat. You won’t see results instantly, but eventually you will notice more and more under you belly as your abs muscles and more come into view. Once your body fat is low enough you will see veins where your “Beer Belly” used to be, that is when you know you’ve truly arrived. (See Cam Gigandet in the movie “Never Back Down”)

  2. Hi Little White Boy,

Eating McDonalds constantly won’t always make you gain ! It may be that you eat 2,000 calories a day but you might just have a naturally high metabolism that means that you burn off the calories during the day!

If you want to gain : increase your calorie intake- I mean a balanced diet, not constant Big Mac meals!) and increase the amount of barbs you eat.

If you are hitting the gym and want to get size you have to commit to it- I’m talking about going down 4 or 5 times a week. Work your muscles in pairs (I do biceps and chest, triceps and back, legs and shoulders- usually throw abdominal work in the leg/shoulder session).

To gain size you need to be doing low rep near your max – eg if your max lift on chest press is 80kg, you need to try and do about 4-6 reps on 70/75kg.

To gain strength you need to do about 8-12 reps. If your max is 80kg you want to be aiming for 8-12 reps on about 60/65kg.

To get tone/definition you need to increase the reps to about 18-21 and have a low intensity – eg max 80kg, you do about 35-40kg..

Keep working and you’ll be buff for freshman year!

    Hope this helps!

    Ash

  3. Okay so i eat MacDonalds constantly but never gain …but at the same time i go to the gym with my mom and never gain muscle. I do get enough protein, but i cant figure out why this is happening, i just want to be buff by my freshman year of collage.. any help??

    1. stop eating Mac Donalds. Start eating fruits and vegetables like snacks replacing all the bad stuff. And exercise using your own . Don’t drink alcohol or sodas. Drink LOTS OF water or fruit juices that have no added sugar or high fructose corn syrup. Eat pulses, grains, nuts etc. Exercise- push ups.pull ups etc. anytime u have. Stop watching TV. Exercise instead. Get fresh air!!! Its a radical but easy change.
Trust God!!! Have fun!!! Get buff and feel good about it! Because you will be healthier!

    2. drink milk, chocolate or strawberry milk, and eat bread and things made with or by bread, donuts, pizza, french toast etc… things like that.

    3. Hi White Boy,

The truth is, everyone’s body is different. It’s great you have a fast metabolism however chomping down McDonald’s five times per day simply can’t be good for you. Keep working at it and surely you will see results.

  4. I have the slowest metabolism on earth. I inherited it from my father’s side. It’s hard to find one specific sport to focus on too. I’ve tried martial arts, swimming, tennis, basketball, soccer and I’m telling you, no loss whatsoever (well my legs became nice and shapely but my belly just wouldn’t lay flat). Do you suggest any physical activity that would reduce belly fat and arm fat?

    1. Hey Amy,

One of the most annoying things about the human body is that it chooses where the fat goes, not you.

Likewise, when you play sports etc it also chooses where it comes off as well! (as you have probably seen with your legs)

The best thing you can do is keep going with the sports, preferrably interval training (2 minutes low intensity then 1 minute high intensity for abotu 15 minutes) on a cross trainier or running! You will find the fat will slowly go (I was average build, now I am pretty stripped and lean – found mine went from my arms, then my legs, then my belly).

Like I said, the biggest pain is that no specific excersise will get rid of fat from a certain area of your body so keep working hard, try and add in some interval training, drink 8 pints of water a day and try to cut down on too many carbohydrates such as white bread, pasta, potatoes etc.

Hope this helps and good luck!
      Ash x

  5. I am having such a hard time losing . I want to eat better but i cannot afford to buy food for me I have to eat what my husband wants. I am in a wheelchair so it is 100x harder. The only exercise I get is the wii. help, I need the magic pill to lose and throw one in so I can walk again.

    1. I empathize with you. I was in a wheelchair for a short period of time, from a stroke i was paralyzed on the left side of my body, and after a long hard slog at rehab, I learned to walk and talk and eat etc and it depends on your personal circumstances you need to be at your optimum health to assist when you start walking again. I would hope that your husband is empathetic towards you to help you reach your goal My partner at the time I had a stroke decided it was all too hard and left me, his loss I say, however I had another stroke 8 months ago,no paralysis I have several other side effects that require medication with side effects of gain due to slowing the metabolism. I have put on30 kgs very quickly so I will give this a go and see if i can’t reverse the effects and increase my metabolism and keep you posted on this method, sounds good,
I wish you all the best on your recovery, Kris

  6. I have being tracking your blog for a period of time and i must say you have a very interesting topic going on here. I myself also used to suffer from gynegomastia, also know as man breasts. Thus i did some research on Bing and manage to find your website. You got a loyal reader and i am telling my colleagues about this. Thanks.

  7. Hi..
I have recently lost of about 20 kgs over a period of one year under the guidance of a nutritionist mainly by EATING correctly.
I jus want guidance (list of foods etc..)to MAINTAIN and enhance my SHAPE of body., i.e TONE IT.
reduce belly fat FOR GOOD and maintain.
    thanks.
    P.S. I am a vegetarian.

  8. This is an amazing list..i had no idea that hot peppers could speed up my metabolism. since i had my son i havent been able to maintain my and i am the heaviest i have ever been, i plan to use these steps faithfuly i am truly desprate.

    1. It is a list that is easy enough to put into my diet i like this I also herd (not sure how effective) that green and red bell peppers help with appetite control so maybe this will be good to put in there with all those calorie burning foods!
I to have gained a tone of with having kids lost 50 need to loose another 40 and just not feeling it! but this i can try!

  9. Hello,
I am 38 and disabled with server back problems as well as I am super morbidly obese. I know that I have let my self go and it is my fault, but I have realize that no one but me has to live this life and I am the one that is making it harder on me. My metabolism is so low that the diets i have tried in the past has desperately failed. I am not able to exsercise the way I need to because the doctor has said that the only thing that is holding my spine together is the weak muscles surrounding my vertebreas. He says that i need to lose a hundred pounds before i can really excercise to lose the rest of the that I need to. I really need help! Is there any advice to help me or any foods the will increase my metabolism greatly that way I can get my life back cause I really dont want to die?

    1. Hey man, try this routine.

In the morning: drink juice of 2 lemons in 1 bottle of water (1 litre approx). Use sweetener if you want, but NOT sugar!!
drink green tea (again, use sweetener if you need, but not sugar).
eat a small proteine meal (some turkey ham, low fat cheese).

Drinking these and eating proteins in the morning should give a boost to your metabolism.

Also: drink other 2 litres of water each day and have veggie/soup snacks every 3 hours or so. Also you need to eat yogurt or other diary products. If you don’t manage to eat only vegetables (maybe you are used to eat stuff that taste better) start with easting half-half. This way you will feel full with eating less.

    2. Try doing more search on fruits and veggies. I have heard that grapefruit is a fruit than burns more calories to digest than it contains. There is a lot of good advice in here. Ultimately your mind is in control. Look at some NATURAL appetite suppressants that will provide nutrition. Not the quick fix advertisements You can do this. Wish you the best!!!

    3. Slowly cut down on calories, eat a healthy breakfast with a lot of protein (egg whites, grapefruit, kiwi, turkey bacon, chicken, other fruits an vegies) eat a small snack in between lunch. Eat a healthy lunch with some complex carbs like wheat bread. Wheat bread an tuna with a tbsp of low fat miracle whip is a great lunch. Eat a small snack in between lunch an dinner an for dinner get a little less protein then breakfast with little to no carbs. Eat 5 times a day, take multi vitamins, take fish oil, stay away from simple carbs, stay away from sugar, stay away from anything fatty unless its nuts, drink coffee in the morning, drink green tea with your lunch, try to get to the ultimate goal of 1200-1500 calories a day, drink a lot of water (8-12 glasses a day an whenever your hungry in between meals) eat at least 1 spicy meal a day (it will increase metablilsm by 25%) an the best way to lose is to ask yourself why you want to lose it. Really dig deep down inside yourself an find the answer. If its “because I don’t like the way I look” or “because I want people to notice me as good looking” then its not the right answer. Keep asking yourself why you want to look good or why you want people to notice you’re good looking until you find the real reason. An emotional reason that only you know about. That is the key to motivation. Please feel free to e-mail me with question or your progress. I would love to hear about it or help you.

    4. Hi, I really feel for you Tonya. I am 65 and have a huge tummy problem. I have just started an eating plan, NOT a diet. It means eating 6 SMALL meals, high protien with a small amount of carbohydrates, per day. You will not be hungry, and this will boost your metabolism. Also, (see your doctor first), try the “lemon and cayenne drink” (google this and find out more).. Having cups of green tea and glasses of water also helps clean out your waste-matter, helping in wieght loss.

    5. Hi I am 40. 10. I have been the over kid since I was about 10 and I’m nearly 20 now….No matter what I do I can’t seem to lose . I’ve tried diets, I was in sports from 4th Grade until I graduated, I’ve worked out lifted s anything you can think of. I don’t eat that much but I have seemed to accumulate 350 lbs. (probably more now) I am 6’4 but I still hate seeing myself like this because people say “Well you’re tall you have more to fill out.” Well obviously I’m almost to the end of my chain with that. So what I need is tips, tricks, sooooomething to help me. I want to change so bad for me and my family and just overall be healthier, and I want to do that in a healthier fashion, no pills no miracle diets like atkins or something because well trust me that DIDN’T work. So please only constructive criticism that’s all I want………

    1. I too have always been heavy and as a kid my mom had me on every diet there was at that time. i am 63 and still fighting all that extra . but i wanted to tell u that i started out maybe 6 months trying what one of my doctors told me. 8 ounces of v-8 juice a day and i was eating jimmychingas( spelling), the steak and cheese ones, not much else. some fruit and i could eat other meals sometimes without feeling deprived of food. i went from about 300 lbs down to 263. when i stopped eating that way, i went back up to 273. so i have to start over. it is the easiest “diet” i was ever on. i take vitamins. multi, vit e, vit c. calciumwithd, and i can tell when i am out of these things. this might help u. altho i think everybody’s body is different.. i have a lot of medical things wrong with me, so i really do try to take better care of myself. I had cancer 3 times, diabetic, fibromyalgia, arthritis(2 kinds), bi-polar and depression and that is just part of it. but if this can help you, i would be happy for u u are so young. hang in there sincerely wanda price.

    2. Find things that keep you motivated! Success stories help me there are a ton on the net! Eating right and working out can’t go wrong there. Coffee really helps with appetite and metabolism just dont put a ton of crap in keep it black. And happy tummy means happy person pro biotics every day will help with this and foods high in fiber try yougurt and lots of veggies. good luck!

  11. I’ve cut back on the no-no foods, but ever since Menopause ended, I seem to be gaining pounds instead of losing. Ten years ago, I weighed 140 and I just weighed in at the doctor’s office at 167. This is the most I’ve ever weighed in my life. I’m 60 years old and would sure love to lose at least 25 pounds and feel as good as I did 10 years ago. So, I’m going to try the foods listed (except for grapefruit and hot peppers) and change out my workouts to see what happens.

  12. One thing that you should also do to increase your metabolism is to cut back on your meat consumption. Eating a lot of meat (especially red) will just kill your metabolism.

Vegetables and fruits are the way to go!

More steps you need to take to lose your metabolism

  14. The author’s syntax in the following paragraph did not make sense to me. I was wondering if she could rephrase please? Particularly, the first sentence is difficult to follow.

“Another Good way to raise your metabolism is to try a new diet that cycles your calories with some on day and other days off of your diet. This is a new style diet that works great, the name, Fat Loss 4 Idiots. Check out the review that I have done of the diet that is really built to boost metabolism.”

  15. Yeah they should mention men too! I tried to lose also when I was younger and really I understood that the bets way was to have a healthy lifestyle. It means eating good food and doing weekly exercises…nowadays I’m thin like a cigarette! LOL

  16. Hello all those on the same scale of pace i have been on 🙂 i started a diet last aug i have lost about 61 lbs i go to the gym at least 3times a week for about 2 hrs each day i do eat right BUT i have been at a stand still for about 10 weeks cant seem to break my cycle fo standstill- I started at around 233 and im at 171 now and have been. I dont know what to do i have been reading alot about jump starting my metabolism what foods to eat i know to change my workout here and there but anything helpful someone can tell me would be great. Good luck to all those who stick to it im 48 yrs old i feel great! We as people who are on this type of lifestyle and take it seriously may email me for anything
or words of encourgment! good luck!

    1. Hi Lydia,,,,,you’ve done really really well,,,bravo!!!,,,i kept getting bored at the gym too but now i just switch machines a lot more often,,,,,5 or 6 minutes of really hard work on 4 or 5 machines is very doable and before you know it you have 25 to 30 minutes of a great workout,,,,,Jim

      1. Reduce your caloric intake it needs to go down as your goes down to keep losing
use an online caloric calculator , after you input your info , current height , activity level ect and how much you want to lose in what amount of time it will gfive you the number of calories to take in each day, and you will lose if you follow it , and reach your goal, good luck 🙂

    2. I think this is just a typo. If there was an ‘s’ on the end of the first word ‘day’ it might make sense. Eg: “Another good way to raise your metabolism is to try a new diet that cycles calories with some on days and other days off of your diet”. I could be wrong but I think that is the problem and the name of this style of diet is called “Fat Loss 4 Idiots”. I hope that makes sense now.

    3. Good on you Lydia. You are quite inspiring. I am not at all sure about the idea of reducing calories at the moment. It is quite common for people to reach a plateau at times throughout the process of losing . With time your body becomes more adjusted to your new lifestyle, ie taking in less calories and using up more energy. Your metabolism becomes slower and your body more efficient and during this plateau it is as though your body is waiting to see if this is a situation where you may be going into a famine in which case it needs to be prepared for “starvation”. This of course means the body will need to take longer to burn what calories it takes in as a survival mechanism. However, if the body finds that there is plenty to eat, no threat in the future, the metabolism will get faster and start burning up those calories once again. So you need to increase your calorie intake at this stage but wisely of course. Perhaps you could take in more protein-rich foods since you are doing a lot of exercise but I would suggest asking one of the trainers at your gym about what are some good foods to add for your particular situation. By all means see if they agree with what I have said. The way I have explained this is my way of understanding it though I have heard it explained ‘chemically’ and ‘nutritionally’. Even if you decide not to take my advice on increasing your calorie intake I would suggest you discuss the idea of reducing your calories with a doctor or dietician before you take action. I see it as potentially dangerous to keep lowering your calorie intake as you lose more . It is setting up a cycle in which you would be eventually starving yourself.

    4. I went from 248 to 170 and could not get off that mark I tried so hard and in the end I gave up! back up to 195 any words for when I hit that spot again I really would love to bee 145-150 which is on the high side of average for my height. so that goal isn’t bad but I seem to start zoning out if I cant loose at least 1 pound a week.

  17. Hi. My name is Katie and I’m 12. I’m trying to loose . I have a question. One of my friends told me that blueberry juice can boost metabolisim. Is this true?

    1. I have nooo idea if its true… but im 12 too and i really wunna lose lol(: But i just wanted to say good luck 2 you and i hope you lose as much wiegth as you want(:

    2. hi katie try 8 ounces of v-8 juice a day and eat cottage cheese. been working for me and i am 63 years old. since you are young it may do you easier and better. good luck sincerely wanda

  18. Weight loss is a hard thing. If it was an easy thing then everyone would be doing it. It also doesn’t happen over night. It takes time and persistance. You cant give up!

Justin- The foods to help boost metabolism will work for men and women. The amount of calories that you should consume a day depend on a couple factors. One factor is how much you currently weigh and how much you want to loose. The recommended calorie consumption a day is 2000 calories. But that is if you want to maintain the you are currently at. If you want to loose you need to cut back a few hundred. Another factor that needs to be considered is how active you are on a day to day basis. If you are running 5 miles a day then you are going to need more calories than someone who walks a mile everyday. Food is energy and if you exerting alot of energy then you need more food.

To all those who are exercising and dieting and not loosing – I have struggled with loss for over 7 years. I started reading books and educating myself on what I was really eating and how it was distroying my body functions. I found out that everything I thought that I was doin to help myself was wrong! For example, I would eat lean cuisenes for lunch and slim fast meals for dinner. Helathy right??? WRONG! Those are all prosessed foods and prossessed foods are a big player in why americans are over. Another example, anyhing that says “diet”, “lowfat” is sooo dangerous! You would think the first step to dieting would be to eat diet and low fat foods. Well let me inform you that these foods can be labeled lowfat because they substitute sugar with an artificial sugar. Artificial sugars such as aspartame do serious damage to your bodies systems. Same goes for bleach flour, high fructose corn syrup and all the chemicals and perservitives they put into our food. The stuff is DEADLY!

I am not an expert but have learned alot over the years. My advice if you want to loose is to read up on this stuff and find out what you are really doing you your body. You can exercise day and night but if you are not eating right then you will never loose . Nutrition is HUGE!

    1. Katie- you are SO right and I needed that reminder. It is absolutely amazing how we are so accustomed to believe advertising statements and we are being lied to. FRESH FRESH FRESH is really the best way to go. And can I just get on my soapbox and say that cow’s milk is terrible for our bodies as well? I did some research due to a child with special needs and found out how bad dairy is. These cows are malnourished, sickly, pumped full of hormones, antibiotics and steroids. If you think about it, we cant take meds and breast feed our children, so why would we take breast milk from a cow that has been pumped full of toxins?? Cow’s milk is meant for a baby cow, to plump them up quick, not for human consumption. We are the only species to drink another species breast milk- yuck! It causes allergies, exzema, abnormal cell growth (ie. cancer), etc. PLEASE PEOPLE, research this! There are sooo many other options! Almond milk, rice milk, coconut milk and soy milk (though I am not a huge advocate of soy) that’s a whole other story. LOL! Anyway, education is vital and knowledge is power. We can’t leave our health to the government, look at our fat/unhealthy leaders!

      1. This is not true!! I was at one time engaged to a dairy farmer and there was no steriod or hormone pumping. At when any cow was on antibiotics or just gave birth they were milked last and that milk went to a seperate machine to be discarded.

Instead of doing research, why don’t you just go out and watch with your own two eyes!!

  19. How come they only mention women? These should work for men too. Men also need to lose . Apparently, according to my female cousin, men on a diet need to eat more calories than women do. I don’t know if that’s true and does this article aim for both men and women or just women?

    1. Men as a rule should be able to eat more than woman if there isn’t any underlying problems my husband can eat almost 400 more calories than me keep in mind he works out hard. Just try to make sure those calories you eat are healthy calories if u eat junk you will feel like poo!

    1. I did the same thing. Just stop looking at the scale, love. It is very discouraging and right now you need motivation, Watch your clothes and how they fit. Sometimes it can take up to a month to see results because your body is balancing the fat/muscle change and your muscles will retain water until it finds its equalibrium. If after a month, start researching what your eating and make some changes, Until then, numbers don’t mean much 😉 Hope this helps!
