I had not heard of this until today but a few years ago there was a diet created by General Motors called the GM Diet to get or at least keep the employees in shape (to bad it didn’t help the bottom line) and this diet was really popular even outside of General Motors.

The GM Diet is one of those older diets that seems to be based on heresay and fads more than anything and you can see this in the strange ideas about drinking certain alcohols and the idea of eating until you are “stuffed” can not be at all good over the long term. Also funny is an all meat day as opposed to the fat loss 4 idiots all fruit day.

The GM Diet was originally created by GM and only for the employees and families. Somehow GM (biggest company in the world at the time) got a grant from the FDA and the Department of Agriculture to create this. Johns Hopkins was involved and the diet was approved and launched in 1985.

This GM Diet program is designed for a target weight loss of 10-17 lbs per week. It will also improve your attitudes and emotions because of its cleansing systematic effects.

This can also be used over and over again although I am not to sure about the food balance as it seems to be extreme in a few ways. The GM Diet is designed to flush your system of impurities and give you a feeling of well being. The plan is designed to lose you 10 pounds or so in a week. Has anyone tried and found this?

GM Diet Plan

During the first seven days you must abstain from all alcohol. You must drink 10 glasses of water each day on the GM Diet

Day One All fruits except bananas. Your first day will consist of all the fruits you want. It is strongly suggested that you consume lots of melons the first day. Especially watermelon and a loupe. If you limit your fruit consumption to melons, your chances of losing three lbs. on first day are very good.


Day Two
All vegetables. You are encouraged to eat until you are stuffed with all the raw or cooked vegetables of your choice. There is no limit on the amount or type. For your complex carbohydrate, you will start day two with a large baked potato for breakfast. You may top the potato with one pat of butter.

Day Three A mixture of fruits and vegetables of your choice. Any amount, any quantity. No bananas yet. No potatoes today.

Day Four Bananas and milk. Today you will eat as many as eight bananas and drink three glasses of milk. This will be combined with the special soup which may be eaten in limited quantities.

Day Five Today is feast day. You will eat beef and tomatoes. Eat two 10 oz. portions of lean beef. Hamburger is OK. Combine this with six whole tomatoes. On day five you must increase your water intake by one quart. This is to cleanse your system of the uric acid you will be producing.

Day Six Beef and vegetables. Today you may eat an unlimited amount of beef and vegetables. Eat to your hearts content.

Day Seven Today your food intake will consist of brown rice, fruit juices and all the vegetables you care to consume.

Tomorrow morning from the GM Diet you will be 10-17 lbs. lighter than one week ago. If you desire further weight loss, repeat the program again. You may repeat this program as often as you like, however, it is suggested that you are allowed two glasses of white wine in addition to the instructions on the program. You may substitute champagne for white wine. Under no circumstances are you to drink any other alcoholic beverages with the exception of beer which is allowed. Any liquor (bourbon,vodka, rum) is forbidden.

Cream drinks are especially forbidden on the GM Diet. You may have an occasional cordial such as creme de menthe or schnapps, but you must always limit yourself to two drinks.

If you wine, drink only wine that day. If you have beer, drink only beer that day, etc. Alcohol adds empty calories to your diet. However, after the first week on the GM Diet it will help your digestion and settle your stomach.

GM Wonder Soup

The following soup is intended as a supplement to your GM Diet. It can be eaten any time of the day in virtually unlimited quantities. You are encouraged to consume large quantities of this soup.

28 oz, Water, 6 Large Onions, 2 Green Peppers, Whole Tomatoes (fresh or canned), 1 Head Cabbage, 1 Bunch Celery, 4 Envelopes Lipton Onion Soup Mix, Herbs and Flavoring as desired.

GM Diet Additional Notes

Vegetables as may be taken in the form of a salad if desired. No dressing except malt, white or wine vinegar, squeezed lemon, garlic, herbs. No more than one tea spoon of oil on the GM Diet.

You have above a recipe for the wonder soup which can be eaten in unlimited quantities. This soup is a supplement while you are on the program and it should be a pleasure to eat. Not everyone likes cabbage, green peppers, celery etc. This recipe is not inflexible. You may substitute vegetables according to your taste. You may add any vegetables you like: asparagus, peas, corn, turnips, green beans, cauliflower, etc. Try to stay away from beans (lima, pinto, kidney, etc.), however, because they tend to be high in calories even though they are very good for you.

Beverages you may consume while on the GM Diet program :

1. Water (flavored with lemon/lime if desired).
2. Club Soda is OK.
3. Black Coffee. No cream or cream substitute. No sugar or sweetness.
4. Black Tea = Herb or Leaf.
5. Absolutely nothing else except the fruit juices which are part of day seven. No fruit juices before day seven.

How and Why the GM Diet Works

Day One – You are preparing your system for the upcoming program. Your only source of nutrition is fresh or canned fruits. Fruits are nature’s perfect food. They provide everything you could possibly want to sustain life except total balance and variety.

Day Two – Starts with a fix of complex carbohydrates coupled with an oil dose. This is taken in the morning for energy and balance. The rest of day two consists of vegetables which are virtually calorie free and provide essential nutrients and fibre.

Day Three – Eliminates the potato because you get your carbohydrates from the fruits. You system is now prepared to start burning excess pounds. You will still have cravings which should start to diminish by day four.

Day Four – Bananas, milk and soup sound the strangest and least desirable. You’re in for a surprise. You probably will not eat all the bananas allowed. But they are there for the potassium you have lost and the sodium you may have missed the past three days. You will notice a definite weight loss of desire for sweets. You will be surprised how easy this day will go.

Day Five – Beef and tomatoes. The beef is for iron and proteins, the tomatoes are for digestion and fibre. Lots and lots of water purifies your system. You should notice colorless urine today. Your allowance calls for the equivalent of five “quarter ponders”. Do not feel you have to eat all this beef. You must eat the six tomatoes.

Day Six – Similar to day five, Iron and proteins from beef, Vitamins and fibre from vegetables. By now your system is in a total weight loss inclination. There should be a noticeable difference in the way you look today, compared to day one.

Day Seven – Finished off the program like a good cigar used to finish off Victorian meals, except much healthier. You have your system under control and it should thank you for the flushing and cleaning you just gave it.

I am not sure of the value of the GM Diet but go ahead and try this and see if you are pleasantly surprised. Make sure that if you try this that you also let us all know of the results good or bad in the comments below. Maybe GM Diet will me the legacy that General Motors will be remembered for instead?

    I am planning to start this diet tomorrow on.i have been regularly gymming for the last 7 months or so and have reduced around 18 kgs.
    the GM Diet says u can loose 10-17 pounds weekly but wil that work in my case aswell since i have already lost over 15kgs ??
    Besides what has been your personal experience ?? what was the maximum u people were able to loose after that week.

    I am on Day 4, I feel so far so good and am not sure how should I take the beef/chicken for my day5.. the beef/chicken should just be boiled or we can add anything to it make it little tastier.. and how much I should be consuming for the day.

    1. i generally have chicken…..and i marinate it with various sauces…in limited quantity….and then grill it!!

    by the end of my diet overall i lost approx 7.7lbs, and i am very pleased.

    my skin looks amazinng i will surely gv my self a seven day break and give it a nother go .

    it was all worth it 🙂

  4. End of Day 3: lost 5.5 lbs overall,

    its amazing how much energertic u feel even after consuming fruit n veg did 4km run on day 3

    going on Day 4 so far 2 bananas down and 1 glass of non fat milk, feel ok so far.

    its so true my cravings have minimized so much

    i am impressed abt my self coz i resist so much treats at work with a smile 🙂

  5. Hi Sandra, ur not alone!! I don’t know what it was either I followed it strictly and lost only a pound on first 5 days and 6th day another pound and on the 8th day 2lbs and in total I lost 4lbs compared to what ppl have lost I was gutted but on the plus side I got a detox, I got into water and fruits and then at least it’s better than nothing!! So my advice pursue on even if it means losing a couple of pounds!! Dont get disheartened!! All the best for rest of days xxx

    This is day 4 for me on the diet, Ive had no problems at all except a massive headache the first day, guess that was caffeine withdrawal. I am a little disappointed though, everyone seems to have lost in the first couple of days. I have lost nothing at all 🙁 I have listed below everying Ive eaten and drank in the last three days. Ive been constantly keeping a food diary.

    DAY 1
    half a water meon
    2 x sharron fruit
    half cantoloup melon
    2 litres of water
    1 cup of mint herbal tea no sweetner or sugar

    DAY 2
    potato for breakfast with some herbs sprinkled on
    4 bowls of wonder soup made as follows
    1 spring cabbage
    1 onion
    6 sticks of celery
    herbs and sprices
    one jar of passatta
    2 litres of water

    DAY 3
    quarter cantoloup melon
    2 apples
    handful of grapes
    big bowl of sprouts
    big bowl of carrots, cauliflower and broccoli
    2 liters of water

    DAY 4
    sor far today small glass of 1% fat milk and 1 bananna
    half litre of water

    Please let me know if ive done anything wrong.

      Because I had loads of fruits and veg when compared to ur list and all vegs were steamed.

      And I am following 40mins cardio exercise plan as well

      Try increasing ur fruit n veg qtys and try to eat more water based fruits and avoid fruits like sharron fruits,

      Adding to Ashanthi’s point, the reason why you had headache on the first day was because your were still empty stomach. The first day you are supposed to eat too much. For e.g. One big watermelon, one medium cantaloupe, 2 liters of water and after eating all this if you still feel you need something then another kind of fruit staying away from banana and mangoes. Second day you should tray to stay away from the wonder soup and herbs/salt. I did exactly the same like you did my first time around and lost nothing more than 4 pounds in total. The next time I did this diet I made sure I ate a lot on the first three days, and lost 4 pounds just in one day. So try to keep the wonder soup till the 4th day and follow the diet plan exactly.

      1. Hi thanks all for your responses. I seemed to eat loads, I was totally full. I never add salt to anything, it makes me vomit, so I know that wasnt a problem. Can someone answer another question for me, how much rice do we eat on the last day ?

    at the start of day 3 i am abt 3.5lbs lighter to what i was (since i starteded) i am so happy and i was shoked i had so much energy at Day 2 i did 5km run i am very imressed. feel so good and my skin has improved so much so its all worth it.

      I could tell you what I ate:

      Day 1:
      I ate only – I cut up a whole small watermelon, cantaloupe and honey dew mixed togther and ate that all day long. I had one apple in morning and one apple at night. lost 5lbs first day

      Day 2:
      I ate my potatoe for bf and was really hungry by the afternoon so had 2 bowls of soup carrot and celery sticks in between and a corn on the cob and broccoli for dinner.
      lost 2 lbs

      Day 3:
      Ate some more of my melons I cut up on day one 1 bowl of soup for lunch, dinner another corn and broccoli (I made fresh broccoli it was really good) and finished off my melon for snack. I was also eatin cucumber with lemon and salt on it that was really good too. lost 3lbs

      Date 4:
      I ate 6 bannas and and drank my milk I could barely eat another bowl of soup but I tried.

      Day 5:
      I made a roast in the oven for dinner some grape tomatoes. I had roast beef lunch meat and grape tomatoes throughoutt the day.

      Day 6:
      More roast for lunch and 1 plain double hambuger with veggies I cooked all together cabbage, carrots, broccoli, califlower and corn it was a really good combo.

      Day 7:
      I had some brown rice with my veggies from the day before mixed togther with a little hot sauce for lunch and it was so good I ate it like that for dinner too. I also snacked on my cucumber and lemon while watchin TV

      I did not lose any after day 3 weird but I aint complaining:) I have since gained 2 lbs back but I’m will be tryin this again next week but I still feel really good and assumed I would gain a couple back.

  10. Day 2

    Skipped e potato & butter for bf.

    Made a tomato veg masala-: YUMMY!!!
    4 large carrots
    1 green pepper
    Baby corn
    1 can green peas
    4x med tomatoes
    Oyster mushrooms
    Shitake mushrooms
    Long beans
    2 large onions
    Cldn’t find garlic at hm so used Hunt’s tomato & garlic paste (64cal for 1/2 small can)

    Added-:
    6tbspns olive oil
    1 tbspn cumin seeds
    2 tspns veg masala
    1 pinch M.S.G (flavour)
    1 pinch salt

    This would make about 16 servings that u can spread out over 2-3days. Adjust portions as u like. 🙂 U can actually just use mixed veg & its good too.

    My problem isn’t really hunger, but not eating enough. Like in my prev. post that I had to stuff myself with fruits, I really wasn’t hungry but forcing myself to eat a min. of 3 portions so my daily calorie intake won’t go below 1600-1800cal.

    Weighed myself dis morning & didn’t lose any at all, nor fat. Did 45mins on treadmill last night too.

    For those who didn’t manage to lose a single pound, I suggest increasing your calories so your body doesn’t think it’s starving & HOLD ONTO yr fat instead!

    I ws so doubtful of this concept & stuck to a 1000-1200cal diet for almost 2yrs & doing 600-1000cal wrkouts 5-6x/week, & still nothing.

    Last week I decided to take a break & did shorter & less intense workouts, & despite eating lotsa chocolate, I lost a few pounds. MIRACULOUS rite?? lol

    Anyway, I’m stickin to dis diet & I wna finish it cz it also helps cleanse the body. Hope it’ll be of some help even tho’ I smoke! haha

    above to start my day 2 with a yummy baked potatoe and will have a bowl of vegs for lunch

    Ate an apple & an asian pear for breakfast.

    1/4 watermelon & 1/2 a papaya for lunch.

    1/4 watermelon & 1/4 papaya for dinner.

    Honestly went thru’ e day in a breeze. No headaches or hunger pangs. e only problem I had ws forcing myself to finish the fruit on my plate.

    Ws truly stuffed.

    e only problem I hv now is not hving any potatoes which shld be my bf for tmr. Veggies all covered tho.

    Ws thinkin of hving some oatmeal to replace the potato, cz it’s also a complex carb. But so sad cz i loveee potatoes!!! lol

    Also wondering if I shld avoid weighin myself till the 8th day so I won’t get disheartened if the numbers aren’t budging & quit!! What do u guys think?? 🙂

    I started GM diet today, so far so good, had watermelons,pineapple,pears,orange and litres of water. I feel a little dull, but hey NO PAIN NO GAIN.

    I even went for a walk atleast an hour. I didn’t have the soup though, will post my loss tomorrow.

    All the best dieters, you have started this diet with your Will Power, so don’t give up, be steady and success will follow….

    I am K. S. Jayakumar. I am following this diet since 2009. The following are my experiences about the GM Diet:

    1) Whenever I put my more than 80, I start this diet.

    2. This diet plan helps you to control your food habit. (i.e. control eating whatever you see )

    3. It mainly detoxify your body rather than reduce your . As a I HINDU, I see this is one of the FASTING Method. My grand parents follow similar kind of food habit during GOD festival.

    4. Weight reduction is side product of GM Diet.

    5. The minimum recommended calorie for adult is (Man: 1800, Women: 1300). After the diet plan, If you eat for 1800 Calories, You never feel hungry.

    6. I never feel any sick during the plan.

    7. I use this plan every 2 months or 3 months mostly I put more than 80Kg.

    8. If you really want to do loss, follow this rules
    a) take GM diet Plan
    b) After the GM diet plan, control your food calorie to Max of 1800 and Do Exercise 4 times a week
    (Guide line is: If you cut down 7700 Cal per week, You can reduce 1 Kg of per week.)
    c) Reducing of one kg per week is the best option. This reduction will be permanent.

    9. Whether you are in Diet or not, One meal should be made of only fruits and vegetables. (eg: If you eat three times per day, one time food will be veg and fruits.)

    10. Since GM diet plan makes your body clean and neutral position. From the neutral position, if you eat more, the body demand more food, this can happen even 8th day. If you eat less, you get little hunger.

    1. Thanks Jayakumar, I found this to be a good read. I did it once and lost 10lbs took 3 days off and started again Monday but I noticed during those 3 days I was still craving veggies, fruits and other healthy stuff. I didn’t even really til my second day off that I hadn’t even had a diet coke yet. I to plan on doing this every 2 months or so if I notice a gain or have not reached my goal .
