I had not heard of this until today but a few years ago there was a diet created by General Motors called the GM Diet to get or at least keep the employees in shape (to bad it didn’t help the bottom line) and this diet was really popular even outside of General Motors.

The GM Diet is one of those older diets that seems to be based on heresay and fads more than anything and you can see this in the strange ideas about drinking certain alcohols and the idea of eating until you are “stuffed” can not be at all good over the long term. Also funny is an all meat day as opposed to the fat loss 4 idiots all fruit day.

The GM Diet was originally created by GM and only for the employees and families. Somehow GM (biggest company in the world at the time) got a grant from the FDA and the Department of Agriculture to create this. Johns Hopkins was involved and the diet was approved and launched in 1985.

This GM Diet program is designed for a target weight loss of 10-17 lbs per week. It will also improve your attitudes and emotions because of its cleansing systematic effects.

This can also be used over and over again although I am not to sure about the food balance as it seems to be extreme in a few ways. The GM Diet is designed to flush your system of impurities and give you a feeling of well being. The plan is designed to lose you 10 pounds or so in a week. Has anyone tried and found this?

GM Diet Plan

During the first seven days you must abstain from all alcohol. You must drink 10 glasses of water each day on the GM Diet

Day One All fruits except bananas. Your first day will consist of all the fruits you want. It is strongly suggested that you consume lots of melons the first day. Especially watermelon and a loupe. If you limit your fruit consumption to melons, your chances of losing three lbs. on first day are very good.


Day Two
All vegetables. You are encouraged to eat until you are stuffed with all the raw or cooked vegetables of your choice. There is no limit on the amount or type. For your complex carbohydrate, you will start day two with a large baked potato for breakfast. You may top the potato with one pat of butter.

Day Three A mixture of fruits and vegetables of your choice. Any amount, any quantity. No bananas yet. No potatoes today.

Day Four Bananas and milk. Today you will eat as many as eight bananas and drink three glasses of milk. This will be combined with the special soup which may be eaten in limited quantities.

Day Five Today is feast day. You will eat beef and tomatoes. Eat two 10 oz. portions of lean beef. Hamburger is OK. Combine this with six whole tomatoes. On day five you must increase your water intake by one quart. This is to cleanse your system of the uric acid you will be producing.

Day Six Beef and vegetables. Today you may eat an unlimited amount of beef and vegetables. Eat to your hearts content.

Day Seven Today your food intake will consist of brown rice, fruit juices and all the vegetables you care to consume.

Tomorrow morning from the GM Diet you will be 10-17 lbs. lighter than one week ago. If you desire further weight loss, repeat the program again. You may repeat this program as often as you like, however, it is suggested that you are allowed two glasses of white wine in addition to the instructions on the program. You may substitute champagne for white wine. Under no circumstances are you to drink any other alcoholic beverages with the exception of beer which is allowed. Any liquor (bourbon,vodka, rum) is forbidden.

Cream drinks are especially forbidden on the GM Diet. You may have an occasional cordial such as creme de menthe or schnapps, but you must always limit yourself to two drinks.

If you wine, drink only wine that day. If you have beer, drink only beer that day, etc. Alcohol adds empty calories to your diet. However, after the first week on the GM Diet it will help your digestion and settle your stomach.

GM Wonder Soup

The following soup is intended as a supplement to your GM Diet. It can be eaten any time of the day in virtually unlimited quantities. You are encouraged to consume large quantities of this soup.

28 oz, Water, 6 Large Onions, 2 Green Peppers, Whole Tomatoes (fresh or canned), 1 Head Cabbage, 1 Bunch Celery, 4 Envelopes Lipton Onion Soup Mix, Herbs and Flavoring as desired.

GM Diet Additional Notes

Vegetables as may be taken in the form of a salad if desired. No dressing except malt, white or wine vinegar, squeezed lemon, garlic, herbs. No more than one tea spoon of oil on the GM Diet.

You have above a recipe for the wonder soup which can be eaten in unlimited quantities. This soup is a supplement while you are on the program and it should be a pleasure to eat. Not everyone likes cabbage, green peppers, celery etc. This recipe is not inflexible. You may substitute vegetables according to your taste. You may add any vegetables you like: asparagus, peas, corn, turnips, green beans, cauliflower, etc. Try to stay away from beans (lima, pinto, kidney, etc.), however, because they tend to be high in calories even though they are very good for you.

Beverages you may consume while on the GM Diet program :

1. Water (flavored with lemon/lime if desired).
2. Club Soda is OK.
3. Black Coffee. No cream or cream substitute. No sugar or sweetness.
4. Black Tea = Herb or Leaf.
5. Absolutely nothing else except the fruit juices which are part of day seven. No fruit juices before day seven.

How and Why the GM Diet Works

Day One – You are preparing your system for the upcoming program. Your only source of nutrition is fresh or canned fruits. Fruits are nature’s perfect food. They provide everything you could possibly want to sustain life except total balance and variety.

Day Two – Starts with a fix of complex carbohydrates coupled with an oil dose. This is taken in the morning for energy and balance. The rest of day two consists of vegetables which are virtually calorie free and provide essential nutrients and fibre.

Day Three – Eliminates the potato because you get your carbohydrates from the fruits. You system is now prepared to start burning excess pounds. You will still have cravings which should start to diminish by day four.

Day Four – Bananas, milk and soup sound the strangest and least desirable. You’re in for a surprise. You probably will not eat all the bananas allowed. But they are there for the potassium you have lost and the sodium you may have missed the past three days. You will notice a definite weight loss of desire for sweets. You will be surprised how easy this day will go.

Day Five – Beef and tomatoes. The beef is for iron and proteins, the tomatoes are for digestion and fibre. Lots and lots of water purifies your system. You should notice colorless urine today. Your allowance calls for the equivalent of five “quarter ponders”. Do not feel you have to eat all this beef. You must eat the six tomatoes.

Day Six – Similar to day five, Iron and proteins from beef, Vitamins and fibre from vegetables. By now your system is in a total weight loss inclination. There should be a noticeable difference in the way you look today, compared to day one.

Day Seven – Finished off the program like a good cigar used to finish off Victorian meals, except much healthier. You have your system under control and it should thank you for the flushing and cleaning you just gave it.

I am not sure of the value of the GM Diet but go ahead and try this and see if you are pleasantly surprised. Make sure that if you try this that you also let us all know of the results good or bad in the comments below. Maybe GM Diet will me the legacy that General Motors will be remembered for instead?

  1. My 5th time – Today is my first day of the diet…and I guess this is THE one that can be the most difficult!
    I looking forward to having the Wonder Soup tomorrow!

    For all you people who are so happy about the loss, please note it surely comes back…how soon is totally up to you!

    My husband and me do it every few months when we feel our eating is going way out of line. We treat it more of a sanity check on what /when / how much to eat. It changes the way one can eat…like detoxicate totally. So more of a bringing balance back to eating and keep the away for longer by taking a total new look and eating!

    i heard about GM diet about long back(about 6 yrs back) but this was the first time doing this. i was feeling great… this was my 7th day lost 7lbs.. i was thinking of doing again but “how many days we need to give the gap for starting again?” can any one suggest?

      Info I have says to give your body a 2-3 day break before starting again. This is the first time I’ve done the GM Diet and I’m happy to report that I lost 13 lbs in 1 week. I’m taking a 3 day break and will start week 2 on Sunday, 7/16. It’s a good diet to lose the excess we all have but it’s changing our portion size, eating habits and increasing our activity that will keep it off. I know it’s hard, but stick to it and you’ll feel great come Day 8 🙂

  3. Starting diet today . . nothing but watermelon and cantaloupe today . . . so far. I may have an apple for dinner. I’ll post (hopeful) loss tommorrow.

  4. I am a public school teacher and I use this to jump start my summer. I am 29 years old 6’5″ and my is always around 220 at the end of the school year. Like every other American I over eat throughout the year on all the holidays and at the end of every school year we seem to have luncheons and retirement parties every day. Also, it does not help that I am a head coach and father, so my gym time is cut down during the winter.

    Last summer I lost 12 lbs in a week continued to eat healthier and exercise 3-4 days a week and I got back down to 200lbs by July. My bench press was 4-5 reps with 185 lbs, mile time 8:00, perform 20 push ups without stopping, curl ups were easy as hell….

    Helps me feel better, look better in a bathing suit, and I get more energy.

    It is year 2 of testing this diet and I am on day 5 right now, which is the toughest day(tomatoes and beef) and I’ve already lost 6 lbs, wedding ring is too big, watch doesn’t fit, and my stomach is shrinking.

    I recommend this diet to anyone who wants to lose quick and then start better eating and exercising habits. (If you don’t change your habits, then you will slowly put the back on, like I do during the school year)

  5. I DID IT NUMBER OF TIMES AND I LOST WEIGHT UPTO 11 KGS.
    BUT KEEP TRACK OF THE BLOOD PRESSURE SINCE WITH THIS DIET THE BP FLUCTUATES.

    I WILL DO IT AGAIN AND AGAIN AND KEEP FIT.

  6. Since I am a veggetarian, I had look for veggie recipes from http://www.gmdietworks.com – worked pretty well. Combining surya namaskara/Yoga really really helped

    Day 1: Lost 0.5 lb
    Day 2: Lost 2 lb
    Day 3: Remained same
    Day 4: lost 2 lb
    Day 5: Lost .5 lb
    Day 6: Remained same
    Day 7: Lost 1 lb

    Overall lost around 6-7 lbs and feeling a lot lot better

  7. Yesterday was day 4 for me and I lost 3 pounds as of yesterday. I am not going to weigh myself again until the 7th day. I was wondering for the seventh day, can I have ANY type of fruit juice. i.e. apple, grape, ?

    1. today is my 5th day . but still no change ! but i am continuing lets see what will happen .. in day 5th hamburger is ok ..but if i want to take 1/2 slice bread with tomatoo and beef is it ok ? pls let me know

  8. Today is 7th day and I lost 3 pounds. Did not work for me. I wanted to loose 0 pounds, lost only 3 on first day of the diet and after that it was same no change.

    1. rara exactly the same as me. I did it for 2 weeks, I know how slow my body is and only 3lbs in the whole of that time. I stuck to it religiously. Very disappointing. 🙁

  9. I want to start this diet as soon as possible. I weigh about 200 pounds, do you think I will lose faster than thinner people?

    I also don’t really like bananas and I hate milk, is there a substitution for that day?

  10. Hi, I have started this diet today. i hope it works. my only concern is, how well i can keep it off for longer. when i go back to my normal diet will i gain all back?

      1. I think you can have it only on day 4. I was going through some other websites on GM diet, everyone says only day 4. but you can have the soup in unlimited quantities that day.
        i will post again tomorrow about the change. i started with 155.4 lbs.

  11. Guys, One suggestion pl dont starve yourself with this diet. You are just punishing your body with this diet. PLZZ DONT DO THIS. The best way to loose your is by going to gym, exercising regularly or walking atleast 30 mins a day. With such diet u only loose your body fluids and no fat which you will gain sooner than later. Many of you will witness headache and feeling low its bec u r deprived of all good nutrients. Always remember a good body should not loose more than 1 kg per week. Continue with your low fat diet, daily exercising and you will loose all those flabs slowly but steadlily.

  12. Im starting this diet tomorrow. It was giving to me by a friend and she stop at day 5 bout she said she lost 4 pounds while on it. So i figure if she lost 4 pounds and didnt finish the whole diet. Then im bound to lose some . Just one question with the vegetables can i dip it in some dressing. if so what kind of dressing??? Thanks.

  14. Some questions on GM diet. Please help me resolve, before i start on this program:

    1) can i consume bread in this diet? if yes, on which days?

    2) wheat pancakes (chapatis) are they fine with veg soup or chicken/beef? if yes, on which days?

    3) can i have eggs? if yes, on which days?

    4) to cook vegetables and beef/ chicken how much oil/butter can i use?

      You should follow the diet as it is only the foods it states. There is no bread, eggs or oil.

  15. I lost 20 pounds in 2 weeks! Awesome diet! The whole trick to this diet is EAT EAT EAT!!!! if you don’t eat the moment you wake up and eat at least 6 times a day, it won’t work!!! And eat till you are full! Pounds will shed! Next goal, 30! I want to lose a total of 35. Will be a breeze on GM!

  17. Hi this is my second week of the diet day 5. The first week I stuck to the plan religiously, no cheats, drank 2.5 – 3 litres of water per day and only lost 2lb, my body I have known from previous diets is a little slow, so decided to stay on the diet for a second week, give it time to catch up. I am currently on day 5 of my second week, stuck to it again, and am so disappointed, my is back to what it was before I started the diet. So frustrating………anyone else have this problem.

Yes Sandra, I had the problem, i did it earlier .. lost 10lb but then it came to level zero.. so i started the diet agin and voila my didn’t budge for the next 4 days.. frustrated i said good bye to the diet and resumed my daily normal intake. I started exercising and it is definitely helping me. so don’t go to extreme diets like this even if u do i suggest you to walk for an hour everyday.
