I had not heard of this until today but a few years ago there was a diet created by General Motors called the GM Diet to get or at least keep the employees in shape (to bad it didn’t help the bottom line) and this diet was really popular even outside of General Motors.

The GM Diet is one of those older diets that seems to be based on heresay and fads more than anything and you can see this in the strange ideas about drinking certain alcohols and the idea of eating until you are “stuffed” can not be at all good over the long term. Also funny is an all meat day as opposed to the fat loss 4 idiots all fruit day.

The GM Diet was originally created by GM and only for the employees and families. Somehow GM (biggest company in the world at the time) got a grant from the FDA and the Department of Agriculture to create this. Johns Hopkins was involved and the diet was approved and launched in 1985.

This GM Diet program is designed for a target weight loss of 10-17 lbs per week. It will also improve your attitudes and emotions because of its cleansing systematic effects.

This can also be used over and over again although I am not to sure about the food balance as it seems to be extreme in a few ways. The GM Diet is designed to flush your system of impurities and give you a feeling of well being. The plan is designed to lose you 10 pounds or so in a week. Has anyone tried and found this?

GM Diet Plan

During the first seven days you must abstain from all alcohol. You must drink 10 glasses of water each day on the GM Diet

Day One All fruits except bananas. Your first day will consist of all the fruits you want. It is strongly suggested that you consume lots of melons the first day. Especially watermelon and a loupe. If you limit your fruit consumption to melons, your chances of losing three lbs. on first day are very good.


Day Two
All vegetables. You are encouraged to eat until you are stuffed with all the raw or cooked vegetables of your choice. There is no limit on the amount or type. For your complex carbohydrate, you will start day two with a large baked potato for breakfast. You may top the potato with one pat of butter.

Day Three A mixture of fruits and vegetables of your choice. Any amount, any quantity. No bananas yet. No potatoes today.

Day Four Bananas and milk. Today you will eat as many as eight bananas and drink three glasses of milk. This will be combined with the special soup which may be eaten in limited quantities.

Day Five Today is feast day. You will eat beef and tomatoes. Eat two 10 oz. portions of lean beef. Hamburger is OK. Combine this with six whole tomatoes. On day five you must increase your water intake by one quart. This is to cleanse your system of the uric acid you will be producing.

Day Six Beef and vegetables. Today you may eat an unlimited amount of beef and vegetables. Eat to your hearts content.

Day Seven Today your food intake will consist of brown rice, fruit juices and all the vegetables you care to consume.

Tomorrow morning from the GM Diet you will be 10-17 lbs. lighter than one week ago. If you desire further weight loss, repeat the program again. You may repeat this program as often as you like, however, it is suggested that you are allowed two glasses of white wine in addition to the instructions on the program. You may substitute champagne for white wine. Under no circumstances are you to drink any other alcoholic beverages with the exception of beer which is allowed. Any liquor (bourbon,vodka, rum) is forbidden.

Cream drinks are especially forbidden on the GM Diet. You may have an occasional cordial such as creme de menthe or schnapps, but you must always limit yourself to two drinks.

If you wine, drink only wine that day. If you have beer, drink only beer that day, etc. Alcohol adds empty calories to your diet. However, after the first week on the GM Diet it will help your digestion and settle your stomach.

GM Wonder Soup

The following soup is intended as a supplement to your GM Diet. It can be eaten any time of the day in virtually unlimited quantities. You are encouraged to consume large quantities of this soup.

28 oz, Water, 6 Large Onions, 2 Green Peppers, Whole Tomatoes (fresh or canned), 1 Head Cabbage, 1 Bunch Celery, 4 Envelopes Lipton Onion Soup Mix, Herbs and Flavoring as desired.

GM Diet Additional Notes

Vegetables as may be taken in the form of a salad if desired. No dressing except malt, white or wine vinegar, squeezed lemon, garlic, herbs. No more than one tea spoon of oil on the GM Diet.

You have above a recipe for the wonder soup which can be eaten in unlimited quantities. This soup is a supplement while you are on the program and it should be a pleasure to eat. Not everyone likes cabbage, green peppers, celery etc. This recipe is not inflexible. You may substitute vegetables according to your taste. You may add any vegetables you like: asparagus, peas, corn, turnips, green beans, cauliflower, etc. Try to stay away from beans (lima, pinto, kidney, etc.), however, because they tend to be high in calories even though they are very good for you.

Beverages you may consume while on the GM Diet program :

1. Water (flavored with lemon/lime if desired).
2. Club Soda is OK.
3. Black Coffee. No cream or cream substitute. No sugar or sweetness.
4. Black Tea = Herb or Leaf.
5. Absolutely nothing else except the fruit juices which are part of day seven. No fruit juices before day seven.

How and Why the GM Diet Works

Day One – You are preparing your system for the upcoming program. Your only source of nutrition is fresh or canned fruits. Fruits are nature’s perfect food. They provide everything you could possibly want to sustain life except total balance and variety.

Day Two – Starts with a fix of complex carbohydrates coupled with an oil dose. This is taken in the morning for energy and balance. The rest of day two consists of vegetables which are virtually calorie free and provide essential nutrients and fibre.

Day Three – Eliminates the potato because you get your carbohydrates from the fruits. You system is now prepared to start burning excess pounds. You will still have cravings which should start to diminish by day four.

Day Four – Bananas, milk and soup sound the strangest and least desirable. You’re in for a surprise. You probably will not eat all the bananas allowed. But they are there for the potassium you have lost and the sodium you may have missed the past three days. You will notice a definite weight loss of desire for sweets. You will be surprised how easy this day will go.

Day Five – Beef and tomatoes. The beef is for iron and proteins, the tomatoes are for digestion and fibre. Lots and lots of water purifies your system. You should notice colorless urine today. Your allowance calls for the equivalent of five “quarter ponders”. Do not feel you have to eat all this beef. You must eat the six tomatoes.

Day Six – Similar to day five, Iron and proteins from beef, Vitamins and fibre from vegetables. By now your system is in a total weight loss inclination. There should be a noticeable difference in the way you look today, compared to day one.

Day Seven – Finished off the program like a good cigar used to finish off Victorian meals, except much healthier. You have your system under control and it should thank you for the flushing and cleaning you just gave it.

I am not sure of the value of the GM Diet but go ahead and try this and see if you are pleasantly surprised. Make sure that if you try this that you also let us all know of the results good or bad in the comments below. Maybe GM Diet will me the legacy that General Motors will be remembered for instead?

This is my 5th day! and i lost 2 kgs. i don know what’s wrong, is it because that i intake less water. its just that i forget about drinking water! anyways i’ve been exercising a lot also, atleast 3 hours per day but it doesnt seem working that much! πŸ™ but i still wont give up since this diet has helped me loose my appetite a lot, it really helps in that!
    PS. can i have more tomatoes than included?

  3. hi..im on day 5(dhal and tomatoes day)..i cant eat raw toamatoes..shall i eat fried tomatoes??

    upto now i reduced 4 pounds and im feeling healthy too..thanks for gm diet..

    1. Kavya…..you can make a tomato soup then…..or you can cook them like a vegetable curry with a hint of jeera tadka

      1. It says you can eat wonder soup any day. Can I eat it on day two and it never says anywhere weather we can add salt to any vegetables. Can I add salt in soup or cooked veggies?

      2. hi prakriti…well, i hv completed my diet successfully and i lost 5 pounds,,though i didnt do any exercise…im thinking to continue this with exercise…im strictly following this in weekdays frm monday to friday,,but i cant follow this in weekend……from today i started this diet again…lets see…how it goes..:-)

  4. It says that on the 5th day we can eat 10oz of beef which is equivalent to 6 quarter pounders. Does this mean that i can eat the quarter pounders with bun or without? Please reply soon today is my 3rd day.
    And can i put chicken stock in wonders soup?

    1. You can put chicken stock in the soup. Don’t actually eat quarter pounders, you can just eat that much beef. I would add beef chunks to the soup on Day 5. Have a lean filet on day 6 with green beans and a nice salad.

  5. day 2 for me today. i have to admit that i do feel a bit smaller than i was 3 days ago and can see changes. I have a few queries though:

    it is okay to have watermelon again on day 3 rite.. wat about grapes? Is it really true that u can have any fruit apart from banana?
    for day 4.. what kind of banana’s r u allowed?
    how much tea u r allowed? green tea is what im having with cinnamon and lemon grass. no sugar.
    is smoking allowed?

  6. I completed the diet successfully and followed the entire program very strictly and lost 5 kgs. in total and feel good as I can get into my old summer clothes now.
    One imp thing I wanna share is that – after completing the diet , dont start eating / hogging food all over again as you will gain wt. very easily…..keep ur diet as normal as you can for the next 15 days atleast (if u dont plan to repeat it) , like try having one chapati throughout the entire day and have veggies and fruits and other healthy things….workout harder and avoid food high on calories atleast for the next 10-15 days else you might gain all the lost pounds again…..

      1. Any fruit would do, except for Bananas, mangoes and chiku until day four (that too only bananas on day 4). Day 4 – have any kind of banana……ripen, yellow colored ones will do…. at least 8 throughout the day with 3 big glasses of skimmed milk the entire day.,…..widout sugar….you may add a bit of coffee / tea / honey if you dont like to have plain milk…

    1. yes, many…..have boiled pulses or soya (nuetrella) cooked or boiled or you can have raw paneer or cooked but not fried….or you can have egg white not yellow

    Iam on 5th Day today, have already lost 5 kgs so far…….I have done this diet many times before keeping a gap of 3-4 days. It works really well , only thing required is sheer determination and crave to loose wt….that should be the only thing in onez mind while doing this as it motivates you throughout the diet plan. First three days of the diet are dam tough to handle as its really hard to resist when your friends / colleagues are having your fav dish in front of u n cant have it but if you complete the first three days succesfully, the entire diet goes well and easy to handle. Fourth day – yoru hunger automatically detoriates and you wont feel like having anything high in cal after compromising on the diet for the past three days. Lot of people fail to complete the diet within the first or second day as you are more prone to have your fav dishes after living on only fruits or veggies for a day or two,
    So those who are planning to do this pls be strong enough to complete it, be determined as this needs lot of will power to survive. If you are a vegetarian then you may follow the viggie diet which is equally good….SO ALL THE BEST GUYS!! REMEMBER – DETERMINATION , WILL POWER AND DESIRE TO LOOSE WT. πŸ˜€

      Seems that you’ve done this diet a number of times. I’m on day 3 and have a query about the ‘wonder soup’. I live in the UK and it’s difficult to find the Lipton Soup Mix here. Any suggestions what I can use as a substitute?

Thats not a problem……….U can get those packed soup as well……in India we get “Knorr” packed soup powder which is made by just mixing it in boiling water and stirring well…I had those packets quite a lot throughout the diet….not sure if you get these in UK, but you can try those packed soup powder as well….hope that solves your query !?!

        u said u use knorr soups packets..i am in US..i get them here ..so can we really use them!!!!!i was super shocked to read this ..as they taste good and if can be used…..it will be much easier to diet..\

        We do get lipton soup mix here but not good for my taste..though i can use that..but reading this knorr thing very happy and tears in my eyes to try that…as it is always very diffulct to continue this diet for me..

        some things:
        1)can we use any of them like sweet and sour-corn soup or nay other..i am a vegetarian.
        2)everyday how many packets did u use?
        3)how many bowls can be used after making frm one packet.

        pl pl let me know asap..wanting to astrt

      3. Thanks for that! We do get those soup mixes here. How many cups of soup can be conusmed on day 4? The recipe calls for adding the soup mix to the veges…is tht essential or can the mix be consumed in itself? Also is there a particular one I must stick to or can I go for any of the vegetarian ones and non-vegetarian ones on a meat day? xx

Hey all…..YES, you can try those knorr soup mixes….if ur a veggie….than I think those mis veg ones would be gud, you can choose any one of the variants according to your taste. try having one cup at a time…..and then whenever u feel hungry….you can have one cup……and PLS PLS PLS dont neglect water……drink atleast a min. of 3 ltrs per day……that helps in beating the hunger down by 50 %…..DRINKING WATER IS VERY ESSENTIAL THROUGHOUT THE DIET!
        to make things easy…..Keep a 1 ltr water bottle with you all the time and keep refilling it and drinking it the entire day………..all the best!

  9. Day 1 – lost 4 pounds. I couldn’t believe all the fruit I actually ate. I probably ate about 1/3 of the watermelon! Lost of water, I was going to the bathroom 2-3x an hour! TMI – sorry….

    Day 2 – lost 1 pound – I noticed I was not as hungry and felt like my stomach was shrinking. I ran 4 miles and felt pretty good. I was a real heavy coffee drinker before doing this. about 1/2 pot in the morning at work. While doing this I would drink tea and coffee 1-3 times a day, but only after drinking lots of water!

    Day 3 – I only ate about 1/2 the food I prepared. Really not as hungry and feeling good….I’ll weigh myself in the morning and report…almost half way there….

  10. This diet sure works…. I am on Day 7 and have lost 6-7 lbs o far..Could have lost more had I not had all those Hamburgers on Day 5 & Day 6…Next time around will take care of that….The best thing this diet did to me was it uppressed my cravings for Non Vegiterian foods…Hopefully I should be able to better take care of my body now on….All the best for those who wants to try this out….If you can survive through the first 3 days then you have a better chance of completing this diet….

  11. Im on day 3 today. Overal feeling very tired and a pounding head ache. My hasnt changed an ounce as yet. I hope to see some diff tom. I have done this diet before and it worked great. I will be substituting beef w/ chicken. Gud luck all of u.

  12. Since I am a veggetarian, I had look for veggie recipes from http://www.gmdietworks.com – worked pretty well. Combining surya namaskara/Yoga really really helped

    Day 1: Lost 0.5 lb
    Day 2: Lost 2 lb
    Day 3: Remained same
    Day 4: lost 2 lb
    Day 5: Lost .5 lb
    Day 6: Remained same
    Day 7: Lost 1 lb

    Overall lost around 6-7 lbs and feeling a lot lot better

  13. I’ve done this before and it really works! I lost 11lbs the first time I followed this diet. My sister lost 18lbs but she exercised in addition to the diet. By day 8 I felt fabulous and could not believe that my clothes were actually looser than they were a week prior. I’m back on the detox but this time I’m going to exercise in addition to following the diet and maintain my loss by following a diet similar to this one. Try doing this diet with a co-worker, friend or family member. The support and encouragement of others really helps. Good luck!

    1. I agree with you Leann…..yea doing this with exercise is good….I did the same and lost 5 kgs till the end of day 5 and I think following the veggie diet is better than the non-veg one!

    This is my 3rd attempt to follow this diet. every time i did it, i failed badly after 3-4 days. I have packed my fridge with fruits and veggies and preparing myself for this diet plan. Hopefully i will stick to this all 7 days. I will keep posting about the progress.

    1. good luck rosy……..remember just one thing throughout YOU HAVE TO LOSE WT.ANYHOW!!! I can understand how tough it is….even I failed after few trials , but then my wt. was at an alarming stage which motivated me to do it more and cautiously……..U can do it…all the best!!
