I had not heard of this until today but a few years ago there was a diet created by General Motors called the GM Diet to get or at least keep the employees in shape (to bad it didn’t help the bottom line) and this diet was really popular even outside of General Motors.

The GM Diet is one of those older diets that seems to be based on heresay and fads more than anything and you can see this in the strange ideas about drinking certain alcohols and the idea of eating until you are “stuffed” can not be at all good over the long term. Also funny is an all meat day as opposed to the fat loss 4 idiots all fruit day.

The GM Diet was originally created by GM and only for the employees and families. Somehow GM (biggest company in the world at the time) got a grant from the FDA and the Department of Agriculture to create this. Johns Hopkins was involved and the diet was approved and launched in 1985.

This GM Diet program is designed for a target weight loss of 10-17 lbs per week. It will also improve your attitudes and emotions because of its cleansing systematic effects.

This can also be used over and over again although I am not to sure about the food balance as it seems to be extreme in a few ways. The GM Diet is designed to flush your system of impurities and give you a feeling of well being. The plan is designed to lose you 10 pounds or so in a week. Has anyone tried and found this?

GM Diet Plan

During the first seven days you must abstain from all alcohol. You must drink 10 glasses of water each day on the GM Diet

Day One All fruits except bananas. Your first day will consist of all the fruits you want. It is strongly suggested that you consume lots of melons the first day. Especially watermelon and a loupe. If you limit your fruit consumption to melons, your chances of losing three lbs. on first day are very good.

Day Two
All vegetables. You are encouraged to eat until you are stuffed with all the raw or cooked vegetables of your choice. There is no limit on the amount or type. For your complex carbohydrate, you will start day two with a large baked potato for breakfast. You may top the potato with one pat of butter.

Day Three A mixture of fruits and vegetables of your choice. Any amount, any quantity. No bananas yet. No potatoes today.

Day Four Bananas and milk. Today you will eat as many as eight bananas and drink three glasses of milk. This will be combined with the special soup which may be eaten in limited quantities.

Day Five Today is feast day. You will eat beef and tomatoes. Eat two 10 oz. portions of lean beef. Hamburger is OK. Combine this with six whole tomatoes. On day five you must increase your water intake by one quart. This is to cleanse your system of the uric acid you will be producing.

Day Six Beef and vegetables. Today you may eat an unlimited amount of beef and vegetables. Eat to your hearts content.

Day Seven Today your food intake will consist of brown rice, fruit juices and all the vegetables you care to consume.

Tomorrow morning from the GM Diet you will be 10-17 lbs. lighter than one week ago. If you desire further weight loss, repeat the program again. You may repeat this program as often as you like, however, it is suggested that you are allowed two glasses of white wine in addition to the instructions on the program. You may substitute champagne for white wine. Under no circumstances are you to drink any other alcoholic beverages with the exception of beer which is allowed. Any liquor (bourbon, vodka, rum) is forbidden.

Cream drinks are especially forbidden on the GM Diet. You may have an occasional cordial such as creme de menthe or schnapps, but you must always limit yourself to two drinks.

If you wine, drink only wine that day. If you have beer, drink only beer that day, etc. Alcohol adds empty calories to your diet. However, after the first week on the GM Diet it will help your digestion and settle your stomach.

GM Wonder Soup

The following soup is intended as a supplement to your GM Diet. It can be eaten any time of the day in virtually unlimited quantities. You are encouraged to consume large quantities of this soup.

28 oz, Water, 6 Large Onions, 2 Green Peppers, Whole Tomatoes (fresh or canned), 1 Head Cabbage, 1 Bunch Celery, 4 Envelopes Lipton Onion Soup Mix, Herbs and Flavoring as desired.

GM Diet Additional Notes

Vegetables as may be taken in the form of a salad if desired. No dressing except malt, white or wine vinegar, squeezed lemon, garlic, herbs. No more than one tea spoon of oil on the GM Diet.

You have above a recipe for the wonder soup which can be eaten in unlimited quantities. This soup is a supplement while you are on the program and it should be a pleasure to eat. Not everyone likes cabbage, green peppers, celery etc. This recipe is not inflexible. You may substitute vegetables according to your taste. You may add any vegetables you like: asparagus, peas, corn, turnips, green beans, cauliflower, etc. Try to stay away from beans (lima, pinto, kidney, etc.), however, because they tend to be high in calories even though they are very good for you.

Beverages you may consume while on the GM Diet program :

1. Water (flavored with lemon/lime if desired).
2. Club Soda is OK.
3. Black Coffee. No cream or cream substitute. No sugar or sweetness.
4. Black Tea = Herb or Leaf.
5. Absolutely nothing else except the fruit juices which are part of day seven. No fruit juices before day seven.

How and Why the GM Diet Works

Day One – You are preparing your system for the upcoming program. Your only source of nutrition is fresh or canned fruits. Fruits are nature’s perfect food. They provide everything you could possibly want to sustain life except total balance and variety.

Day Two – Starts with a fix of complex carbohydrates coupled with an oil dose. This is taken in the morning for energy and balance. The rest of day two consists of vegetables which are virtually calorie free and provide essential nutrients and fibre.

Day Three – Eliminates the potato because you get your carbohydrates from the fruits. You system is now prepared to start burning excess pounds. You will still have cravings which should start to diminish by day four.

Day Four – Bananas, milk and soup sound the strangest and least desirable. You’re in for a surprise. You probably will not eat all the bananas allowed. But they are there for the potassium you have lost and the sodium you may have missed the past three days. You will notice a definite weight loss of desire for sweets. You will be surprised how easy this day will go.

Day Five – Beef and tomatoes. The beef is for iron and proteins, the tomatoes are for digestion and fibre. Lots and lots of water purifies your system. You should notice colorless urine today. Your allowance calls for the equivalent of five “quarter ponders”. Do not feel you have to eat all this beef. You must eat the six tomatoes.

Day Six – Similar to day five, Iron and proteins from beef, Vitamins and fibre from vegetables. By now your system is in a total weight loss inclination. There should be a noticeable difference in the way you look today, compared to day one.

Day Seven – Finished off the program like a good cigar used to finish off Victorian meals, except much healthier. You have your system under control and it should thank you for the flushing and cleaning you just gave it.

I am not sure of the value of the GM Diet but go ahead and try this and see if you are pleasantly surprised. Make sure that if you try this that you also let us all know of the results good or bad in the comments below. Maybe GM Diet will me the legacy that General Motors will be remembered for instead?

  7. Thanks Sanjeev and Kavya – The link was quite helpful but it was not able to answer all my questions for example :

    1) On Day 2 is it allowed to have Yam, sweet potato, Green Peas, OKRA (BHINDI) or Corn kernel (BHUTTA) in unlimited quantity?
    2) What is the measurement of a CUP? How many grams of boiled rice can be consumed in a day?
4)Can I cook vegatables in Indian Style but without Oil. I mean to say can i use all the spices that we put in our curries but definetely no Oil.

PS: I was not aware that i can not have mango in the first day as it was not written in the above description of diet.

Progress : I started on Day One with 98.5 Kgs of on day two i am weighing 96.5 Kgs which is very satisfying. I am in day three will update more as the days get passed.

    3. Hey: I’m on my 5th day and so far I’ve lost about 5 pounds. I’m 5’4″ and was 170 pounds, and as of this morning I’m 165–with no exercise. Today I will start exercising; that will surely speed the loss up lots:)

Day 1, I ate: 1 small cataloupe, about 2 cups of watermelon, 2 apples, and 1 grapefruit. I felt hungry all day this day and kept craving pizza. Was tempted to cheat but resisted the temptation.

Day 2, I ate: About 2 cups of steamed broccoli, 2 large bunches of asparagus roasted in the oven with fresh garlic and 1 tsp of oil. I also had soup made with 3 small chicken bouillon cubes (5 calories each) and 4 cups of fresh turnip greens. I was not sure if I could use the bouillon cubes but I could not find the onion soup mix in my grocery store. This day was the hardest for me so far. I’m not used to eating so many vegetables. My cravings were so strong that I had to go to bed early to refrain from eating!

Day 3: This day wasn’t so bad. I had 4 cups of watermelon, 1 small cantaloupe, half a cup of blueberries, my turnip green soup that I had the day before and a cup of fresh radish. I also had 2 bunches of asparagus roasted with garlic and a tsp of oil. I ate more than I did on previous days so I wasn’t as hungry.

Day 4: When I woke up, I ate two bananas immediately. Then I made a milkshake with 2 cups of skim milk and 4 bananas–it was so sweet! I drank this down throughout the day at work. I wasn’t able to finish it. However, when I came home, I ate the remaining two bananas. Cravings were not so bad today.

Day 5: It’s still only 11am but I feel a real sense of accomplishment making it this far (I didn’t think I would). It’s not only about the which hasn’t been much so far (but again, I haven’t exercised) but I also feel good about eating so many fruits and vegetables and drinking water and herbal teas instead of soda. I ate 5oz of 95% lean beef this morning with 3 small tomatoes. I seasoned it with fresh garlic and chili powder and a little cumin. Washed it down with 4 cups of water. Not hungry at all.

I’ll keep you posted on my 6th and 7th days. After my 7th day, I plan to take a 3 day break from the diet and continue another round, hopefully until I reach my goal .

      1. GOOD TO KNOW YOUR PROGRESS .

        I WAS A BIT DISAPPOINTED ON DAY 8 , I WAS ONLY 5 KGS LIGHTER BY DAY 8 .
ALTHOUGH I WAS 4.5 KG LESS BY DAY 4 .

MAY BE , I HAD FEW MISTAKES HAD LOTS OF RICE , HAD LOTS OF LEMON WATER .

SURE WILL BE CAREFUL NEXT TIME .

NEXT TIME , I AM STARTING FROM 26TH MARCH , HOPE FOR BELOW 90 KG THIS TIME .

      2. Hey: I completed the first round of gm diet on the 17th March and lost 7 pounds. Started a second round the next day without taking a break. Completed the second round yesterday but cheated. I ate beef in addition to my rice and had a couple fruits as well. I also had a slice of pizza and some candies. However, the rest of the week, I had followed the plan strictly. I lost 5 pounds total for the second round. So my has gone from 170 starting to 158lbs in 2 weeks. I’m starting the third round today. I hope to do one more round after this third round with my goal being to get my to at least 148 or so…then I will start eating normal.

I know eating this way is not healthy long term but as a friend once told me when I expressed frustration after breaking a previous diet trying to lose slowly, “There’s a right way of doing things and then there’s the way that works.”

Good luck to everyone on the plan. Hope Ajay has reached below 90kgs.

    1. I am on the 3rd day of this program today and have lost about 4 pounds till now. I almost follow the program as defined except I take a cup of tea in the evening…Also I took a readymade chicken soup on first day evening….I had a severe headache at the end of first day evening and I gave into eating this soup and a cup of tea to suffice my cravings….second day i took all vegies in raw and salad form and tea in the evening….made a dressing of 2 spoonful of curd and salt and pepper…and today i am having veggies and fruits…..and its going smooth till now….lets see in coming days…

  8. Hi Friends,

I have few question regarding GM diet. I hope someone out there will be able to answer my query. Here are the questions:

    1) On Day 2 is it allowed to have Yam, sweet potato or Corn kernel (BHUTTA) in unlimited quantity?
    2) What is the measurement of a CUP? How many grams of boiled rice can be consumed in a day?
    3) How many grms of Meat can be consumed on day three?
4)Can I cook vegatables in Indian Style but without Oil. I mean to say can i use all the spices that we put in our curries but definetely no Oil.
    5) What is the quantity of brown rice on last day?
    6) How much wonder soup can be consumed on all 7 days?

    Regards,

    Darno

    1. You may modify the program a little bit here and there as long as you ensure you are not eating fried and calorie rich and sugarry food…..

      1. Also ensure to keep drinking lots and lots of water….I have around 3-4 lts on daily basis….and I have made this a habit now…

  9. guys comeonnnn……!!!!
i have read a lot of comments and most of them sounded like they are forcing themselves into this programme without realizing the after effects….
some reviews that made me wonder why people are really into this:
-“So today was def better, it actually filled me up, though I did happen to get stomach cramps throughout the day that were unbearableā€¦ canā€™t explain why”
-“I felt head ache and tired”
-“Its been going good so far, but have cravings for some carbs. Right now, dreaming of a nice hot roti!! ”
    —–the list goes onnnnnn

some day you will grow tired of this and will let yourself completely loose to carbs and fatty foods and then you will probably end up gaining double , if not more than what you have lost with this insane program.
i mean this programme is not magic…….you eat no fats and min carbs you will ofcourse loose fat…..but thats not the point. you have to remain healthy, fit and full of energy while you are loosing fat…….

I am a person who have fought overweighness…….and am proud to say i am successful….
i am a normal engineering professional and has to work all week, have to do travelling more often than not, love to eat food, very non-vegetarian. Anyone can relate themselves to me- a person with not a lot of free time, cant resist eating good tasty food. BUT i managed to reduce 25kgs , again a big BUT…..NOT IN 7 DAYS or 1 MONTH…..took me more than a YEAR!!! i want to make it clear, i didnt follow any get lean quick scheme. One fine day i realized i had to do it myself, find my own routine.
the most important ingredient is SELF MOTIVATION. dont give up if you dont see results on the second day for god sake………i mean you are fat , you can afford to stay fat for some more time….but you keep going and one day you will be as happy as I am, i promise.
My routine consisted of eating healthy food, with reduced deep fried food, reduced fast food, more of white meat than red, more fish and……believe it or not EXERCISEE (mix of cardio and training)……no point of a diet without exercise……its not hard to find time to do a 30 minuite routine every day comeon. the first 20 kgs that i lost, i did without going to a gym but just with exercises at home- pushups, spot jogging, situps, crunchs, chin ups etc.
and when i say reduced quantity of some foods, i do mean reduced and that i didnt give up on it as i love it.
now my stomach (appetite) has shrinked, can’t eat a much as i used to (great achievement), fat percentage is way low, very fit (can job for an hour without problem). I have fallen in love with exercising, and has become a routine rather than a temporary means to loose fat (second great achievement)

if you are really interested for some words of advice let me know, i was fat once and i know the feeling.
i emphasize the fact again that i am no professional dietician or trainer, but a normal young professional like you all.
    sincerely,
    Anand

  10. Im onto day 2 and to be honest im struggling.
Day 1 wasnt to bad as i quite enjoy fruit and i was able to beat my cravings as i was quite motivated.
Now on day 2 and only eating veggies and it seems to be effecting my concentration and generally speaking i feel a little be down from only eating veggies and the wonder soup. Can anyone tell me if this is normal and you just need to fight through and it gets easier?

    1. hi josh,,

    2. Hi josh,

  11. I have almost finished 2 days of GM diet , but i dont see any changes in my !! i dont know whether i have lot more than i needed . I have just taken corn flakes in the morning on Day 1 , 2-3 buiscuits … i have made chinese vegetable … for the Day 2 …. yet i dont see any change ! On Day 2 i have not taken any corn flakes or buiscuite … Please let me know why i dont see any changes ??

    thanks

    1. Because you are not following the diet properly at all………..there is no cornflakes recommended for day1…..you need to follow the diet very very strictly in order to see best results….

  12. i have just started this diet!
the thing i cant have bananas caus i have tis allergy!!
can someting else substitute with bananas!!
n secondly can i put lil chocolate powder or suger in the milk caus i cant have plain milk!!

    1. there is no substitue for bananas šŸ™ and if you cant have plain milk, dont put chocolate powder or sugar, put lil coffee or tea for taste or honey or 2 tablets of sugar free…….

      1. so, i’m allergic to bananas too. if i just do that day minus the bananas and just eat the soup and drink the milk will i feel really really crappy or will i be able to deal with it?

  13. Today is my 6th Day. I have a doubt since day 1. Do we need to restrict to 10 glass of water or its minimum quantity?

    1. there is no limit for water..drink as much as you can….the more you have, it increases the chances of wt. loss……

  14. i’m on day 7 but don’t have any brown rice, can u plz tell me what can i use for a substitute ?
    thanks
