What is the Master Cleanse Diet?

I believe no matter what some people say that the master cleanse diet is a great idea for everyone to try at some point. I will tell you a bit why.

Most of us go through life having some up and down days and exercise or try to eat better to improve how our energy, concentration and look are. Not trying to hard but doing what we can.

Well for some people that is just not enough. I know that years ago I was the picture of fitness and then through some bad decisions my body started feeling not so great. My wife had to do one of those one day cleanses and I jumped at trying it as well just for a lark on a Sunday.

I can tell you I felt great the next day and for weeks afterwards. That one day cleanse changed the way I looked at cleanses although sometimes the medical community is slow to pick up on the results.

Anyone that has listened to the Howard Stern show on the radio, or has seen the movie Private Parts has seen Robin Quivers, the straight girl to Howard’s crazy antics. Well I just ran across a quote from a People magazine article where she said the following about doing a detox cleansing called the Master Cleanse diet:

“This wasn’t about loss,” says Quivers, who traces her health problems to steroid-based medication that she took in 1989 to regulate her menstrual cycle, “I was really trying to regain my health, and that’s what it did.”

“She’s a whole different person, “says Howard Stern producer Gary Dell’Abate, “I’ve been with her 20 years, and I’ve never seen her this happy and confident.”

As a fitness and health blogger I get lots of people asking and commenting on how good cleanses are for them in general and the master cleanse diet it particular and I know that the medical community is split, but once you do a cleanse, a proper cleanse, you will see and feel the difference as your body becomes much more powerful and you have better concentration and clarity.

Many people will do some kind of fast or detox or cleanse or whatever you call it to lose and although you will lose some it is like starvation , it will come back over time. If however you do the master cleanse diet with the right idea, to make your body healthier and more efficient then you are going to jump start yourself to losing much more easily because you will be in fact making your body work better and you will not be fighting the toxins in your body at all.

What is the Master Cleanse Diet?

Out of all the cleanses out there I had heard that the Master Cleanse is the best one. The master cleanse is also known as the lemonade diet or the cayenne pepper and lemonade diet. The 10 day diet is the detox method that you hear about celebrities doing and having success with. I just also heard from my wife that the girls on The View were talking about the Master Cleanse last week and Beyonce used it in getting read for the movie Dreamgirls. The Master Cleanse diet is free and you can buy the stuff for it at the suppermarket but really it is very very tough to follow through on

Why is the Master Cleanse Diet Tough?

At the start of the Master Cleanse diet everyone is excited but after the first or second day a lot of people bail out. It is importnat ot go through the full 10 days of the Master Cleanse diet and after a lot of searching I have found a way that should help you.

I have found a great and cheap product that not only teaches you how to do the Master Cleanse but since it is so difficult for the 10 days it is also a guide on how to do the cleanse most successfully so that you do not quit half way through.

I have never recommended a fast or cleanse before because I never ran across one that had the support system for it. I could make up a cleanse right now that would probably be good but if I had no support system for anyone to go through is then what would be the point, by lunch the first day you would drop it for a hamburger.

  1. I tried the Master Cleanse, and it was OK. But I now have a better cleanse. Im a very healthy person. I am on my second Dr Max Powers “15 Day Cleanse” and it has really been worth it. I am down 12 lbs! My body feels great, I am not hungry at all.

    I just want to say for anyone thinking about thisโ€ฆJUST DO IT =) I recommend the cleanse, its awesome.

  3. is it ok to use pure maple syrup if you cannot find grade B maple syrup and also is it important to drink laxative tea and if yes which one should i use?? thanks

    1. You must use pure organic maple syrup or else it will not work as well, if at all. Regular syrup contains many sugars and ingredients you cannot pronounce, not good. I also use real lemons, you can use the small lemon shaped juice that is 100% pure lemon juice, not the one that is made from concentrate. Otherwise, to someone elses question, as per the cayenne tasting nasty and burning the throat. I find same thing but I bear with it. My friend does this MC many times and actually goes to a whole foods store, and buys the cayenne pills, which makes the drink way more sweet to handle. Also it is better to cleancse your body using hot water, it will help you drink more lemon cleance while also cleanse your body, liver, blood cells and kidneys more effectively, You wouldn’t wash your car with cold water right. Also I work out during this diet harder, even if you do a little cardio as well as training you will see better results, the only problem that i have is the constipation, andi have tried everything. I feel bloated and get frustrated. This is also because I am on a medication that has symptoms of constipation. I have been on this for 5 days and haven’t lost anything, but my friend says it usualy takes ten days to feel full effects. And it is important that you take the whole recipe, I use the original;

      100 oz RO water or distilled
      15 oz syrup, Grade B, from farm or health store, the darker the better
      120z of lemon juice
      1tsp cayenne.
      this btw is the minimum amount, although if you are hungry u may have more, i think for this this is more than enough lol. Also have a sip of apple cider vinegar to alkalize body and to cleanse impurities I go in hot shower, let water run down back for 30 seconds than on cold for 30 seconds, do this 3 times, then go to bed for 5 minutes, try to do meditation, yoga or relaxation techniques. I do cheat with coffee or tea though, that is the only thing i can’t stop. If you live in USA, invest in DHEA it is a metabolizer that your body creates naturally, but declines after 30. I also use fish iols, multivitamins, Vitamin B, D. Plus i have a thyroid issues, so that could be an aggravating factor also .

    I want to lose 80 lbs total on the master clense, but I need help. I have started and stoped, started and stopped. I don’t have health problems, but I have to find ways to maintain energy. Also, can anyone tell me the best way to stay on this clense and not cheat. I figure if I stick to this diet from tomorrow August 23-October 23 I will reach my goal. Help and motivation needed or even a partner. Thank you.

    1. That is A LOT of to lose on the master cleanse all at once. Two months is over the recommended amount of time to cleanse. Have you thought about maybe doing the cleanse for a week and then going on a raw diet for a week…then repeating the cycle.

    2. I am starting MC today (August 23, 2011) for the second time, but I think I’ll go 21 days (September 12, 2011 – including ) this time around. The cleaning diet is all about mine over matter. After I did it the first time for 10days, I felt wonderful….best sleep of my life. I have been able to maintain my ; however, my doctor wants me to lose an additional 15 lbs so that my BMI is at the normal range. If you can just not focus so much on food but the end results, it is enough to get you through it. Remember, what doesn’t kill you will make you stronger. I’ll try to post my weekly results and hopefully it will motivate some of you. It really isn’t that hard just stay focus. My current is 165. My healthy is around 150 because I have alot of muscle mass from exercises ( lifting & running). Say a pray for me and I’ll be doing the same.

    3. Hi Ann, I have been doing the sameting cheating but mainly at night because I suffer from insomnia but I do good all day long.. I have a fair amount of to lose too I still have yet you to buy more syrup which is difficult to find where I live but if you like to do this together we can motivate each other..I ahve all my ingredients as well except for the syrup and would like to set a goal would be nice to lose all this before Halloween let me know if you liek to support each other and motivate one another this way we can do it together!     4. I find that it’s very hard to maintain willpower and not cheat with longterm goals. Maybe if you just start by trying to do it for 5 or 10 days, it will be easier. Good luck!

Hey Rosalyn I’m on Day 4 on my 40 day journey Day 3 was pretty cool did a 30 min workout SWF in the morning and Lemonade the rest of the day, i had so much energy i haven’t felt that way in ages, compared to day 1 was the hardest for me with light headaches, but as Day 123 pass by i started feeling better. I’m not going to weigh until next Friday which will be my 10 days.

    i read that you are supposed to drink 6-10 cups of the lemon mixture a day, but i was confused because people were mentioning using epsom salt. So are we supposed to drink another mixutre after the lemon one? And is that all we eat for the whole day?

    1. Janet,
      You should consume at least 64 oz of lemonade mixture a day. The SWF salt water flush is part of the process. This is done every morning. I would recommend purchasing the book. You will have instructions on how to be successful. I am on day 5 and I have lost 11lbs. My goal is 40 days.

  8. I am on day 4 of the Master Cleanse and I’m doing fine. I had a weak moment during lunch, but the headaches and dizziness are gone. I have been feeling fine since day 3. Usually after day 3 it’s a breeze.

    A couple of co workers told me I look like I’m doing . I said thanks and smiled. The cleanse is mainly for health reasons. I have digestive issues and sometimes need to take a break from food. This is the 4th time I’ve fasted and I feel wonderful during and after. If you look at it from a spiritial and health perspective, you will see the real benefits. Good Luck!

I start the master cleanse day 1 tomorrow so excited GOD is with me My navy recruiter said that i need to loose over 30 lbs in order to join the US NAVY before i take my Asvab test I’m not going to give up im so motivated. The first time i did the cleanse the resuls was a great success i completed 35 days and now im aiming for over 40 days LETS GOOO!!!!!!

  10. Hello everyone….I’ve been reading all the posts on here and they’ve absolutely made me feel better about this!!! I’m on day 2 n feel ok so far. No hunger pains or headache but my throat is a bit soar from the cayenne pepper. I did the SWF yesterday and nothing happened…I’m getting ready to do the SWF again so hopefully I get the results I need to get rid of this bloated feeling. I do have a question…is it ok to chew gum through this process?? I need something to get rid of the after taste…

    1. Hi Angie,
      Are you mixing the ingredients? I had the same problems the first couple of fasts. I have also tried Simply Slender. It is a premixed Master Cleanse that can be purchased from the GNC store.

      I add real lemons to my mix, it usually helps to calm down the umphf of the cayenne pepper.

      I’ve managed to gain in stone over the past couple horrendous months – hopefully a good cleanse and a fresh start will kick start a return to normality.

        Best sleep I’ve had in ages!
        Felt absolutely fine Yesterday, had 5 lemon maple drinks, 2 decaf black coffees on the train from London to York and 2 herbal teas all in all.
        Weight 9st 9 – 135lbs [-5 lbs] May have been a couple pounds heavier than normal , TOTM.

        So far:
        – Salt flush [nothing drastic as of yet]
        – lemon maple drink x 2

      2. Day 3

        Forgot to weigh myself, but possibly good to weigh on altenate days.
        Yesterday as fine had 7 of the lemon maple drinks and 1 black decaf coffee, I found the lax tea worse than the SWF but neither are having an impact yet.
        No real hunger or headaches, got a chocolate attack at about 11 and just had a glass of hot water with lemon – soon cured that.

      3. Day 4

        Weight 9st 7 133lbs
        Yesterday was my weakest day – legs felt like jelly!
        7 lemon maple drinks, 2 decaf teas [i had soya milk in both] , lax before bed.
        I went to bed dreaming of an omlette – which is odd because I am vegan and don’t eat eggs.

        Today
        I had the salt flush and thus far 4 lemon maple teas and a black coffee at the funeral.
        Definitely feeling more energetic today.
        Writing down your motivations for completing the Mastercleans and te negative feeling you would experience if you weren’t to complete is a very worth while activity.
        Also physically crossing off the lemon maple drinks helps me to keep track – sounds stuid but I can easily forget it I do an evening round up in a food diary.

      4. Day 5

        Weighing every other day -but feeling quite light
        Yesterday was quite an intense day with close friend family funeral but fasting is seen as a suitable response to death, so at least no one was trying to feed me.
        SWF, 7 Lemon maple drinks, 3 decaf coffees, several caffeine free teas, last night I had a craving for chips – weird because I never eat them.
        More energy today, feeling absolutely fantastic – it’s extremely liberating not thiking about food, meals or food shopping – I can’t blieve i’m half way though as much as I can’t blieve i’m only half way through.

  12. Okay, day 1 completed. Day 2 has just begun. Woke up, did the dreaded SWF. I was hesitant to try it again because A. it tastes like vom and makes me nauseous, full, and bloated and B. the first day I tried it had no results, only a queazy bloaty feeling that lasted for about 3 blotastic hours. Low and behold, the flush worked today in full force blast hold on to your toilet seat kind of way. Literally, not to get graphic, but we all want to know, it felt like liquid was being fire hosed out my bum, which yes, i’m very thankful for because i’m not AS bloated. However, the flush didn’t occur all at once, more so in intervals, every 30-45 minutes. I added more salt this time and played a “cheers, bottoms up” game with myself to chug that sucker down FAST. Thank goodness I didn’t leave the house to run a few errands, errands as in going to the store to pick up a few more lovely lemons. The laxative smooth move organic tea proved to be a sly smooth mover as well. It snuck up on me at exactly around the 6hr point where I found myself making friends with cozy cold toilet seat at 6 in the morning. Fun stuff. I didn’t really care for the taste of the tea, but whatever, gotta do to do the doo. It’s around 2p.m. in the afternoon, no cravings, hunger pains, or headaches, only feeling extremely uncomfortable because I feel like Violet the bloated blueberry. Will these bloaty blueberry blues ever go away!!!??? I added more cayenne pepper than the day before, because I read the more the merrier and I don’t mind the taste, however, my throat burns, so it’s a little discomforting, but not intolerable. I’m shooting for 10 days, taking 1 day at a time. I’m going to excersie today and see how that goes and i’ll let you know if it boosts my mood or exhausts my pipes.

    I haven’t taken measurements yet, so I guess I’ll be doing that soon. Last question before I go.. How many glasses of water should I be drinking throughout the day to counterbalance the lemon drink, and is there any medicine I can take to rid my body of this gas, or should I just try to ride it out, or should I say roll it out like Violet. ha ha. And, Is chewing gum a big “no, no, didn’t your momma tell you to keep your hands out the cookie jar” or is it ok? I have 2 finals coming up for my summer courses and chewing gum normally helps me focus (trident spearmint gum). OH 1 last thing, my teeth I noticed have become sensitive to water.. is this the lemon juice? I’m drinking out of a straw, but my teeth still hurt, please help!

    I’ve been searching since i was a little girl for a diet to help me lose but i haven’t found anything yet. I hope that changes this next week!
    Is there any advice you guys can provide for a teen girl that is extremely over?
    Also, is it true that the more you , the more you’ll lose in 10 days?

    1. Hey Kelsey. The MC will definitely help you to lose quickly, but it will be hard for the first few days. Normally, people who have more to lose will lose it quicker than other people, but keep in mind that everyones body reacts differently. I’ve been doing a daily update below and if you’ve read it you will see that I’ve lost 7lbs and I’m only just starting day 5, so it is coming off quickly. I would recommend doing some exercise. Just slight stuff to start off with, like walking, but build up everyday. Once you start losing , you will probably have the desire to do this anyway as you will have more energy.         I started last night with drinking the tea. Woke up early and drank the SWF. That was terrible! It wasn’t so bad at first but then i got VERY nauseous for an hour!
        It finally started to kick in about 2 hours later. I was starting to worry.
        The only thing that i don’t have to do this diet is a scale. The scales that go up to the number that i need are expensive and i just don’t have the money. So i plan on going to my doc office to weigh myself but it depends on if they let me do that.
        Besides that, i am very excited about this week!

  14. This is a semi-awkward question,but I know being on this diet you lose between 1-2 pounds a day. When I start this does that mean I will lose my C bra size cup? Gosh, that would be disappointing. Any girls who have been successful at this diet, what is your opinion/backup answer for this question?     1. Ok people, I am going to start the master cleanse tomorrow. I am currently drinking my first cup of herbal laxative tea to get me ready and I am going to give you honest opinions and results. I am hopeful that this will work!!!!! I will post everyday to let you know my progress. I have a positive outlook on this whole diet and I have read many good things so we shall see. All I know is we don’t know unless we try and right now my body feels like it really needs a pick me up. I will post tomorrow with my starting , inches, height etc. I will do a daily update of loss and after 7 days I will update you on inches lost. I plan to stay on this diet for longer than 10 days so wish me luck!!!!

      1. Day 1 has begun! So to start with I will give you all my stats.
        Height – 5ft 6in.
        Starting – 11st.o4lb (154.04lbs)
        Chest – 38.5in
        Waist – 32in
        Hips – 38in
        Left and right leg – 24in
        Left and right arm – 12in
        So last night I had my herbal laxative tea and this morning I did my SWF. 2 hours have passed and nothing so far!!! Not sure if that is a good thing. The SWF is not very nice to drink but it’s not so bad that I wouldn’t do it. I can force myself to drink it if it will help eliminate things from my body! We will have to wait and see if it will work first though. The actual lemonade is quite nice so I don’t think it will be a problem for me to drink it. I will also be doing some moderate exercise to make sure I don’t lose muscle tissue like some people say you do. Other than that there is not much to report.       2. Day 2 on the detox and all is going well. I weighed myself this morning and I weigh 10st 12.2lbs (152.2lbs) so I’ve lost just under 2 lbs in one day. The SWF and the laxative tea have had no effect on me as yet so we will have to wait and see how that plays out. I’ve read a few times that it takes some people a while for this to work so I’m not worrying. I didn’t get hungry at all yesterday but you definitely have to mentally prepare yourself for this detox. I spent the last 3 hours before I went to bed just thinking about food, but I got passed it. Today I have a slight headache but nothing too bad. I have just drank 2 cups of the lemonade and that seems to have helped a bit. I also have a sore throat but I know that is because I have stopped smoking so I’m not going to blame the MC for that one. I would have got that anyway from stopping. I’ll get back on tomorrow with more updates.

      3. Day 3 and I am a complete believer of this diet already. Weighed myself this morning and my current is 10st 9.4lbs (149.4lbs). 5lbs lost in 2 days!!!! I can’t quite believe it and the difference you can already see in the way my stomach looks is amazing. I have got no doubt that at the end of this diet I will look the best I have looked in years. I still haven’t managed to go to the bathroom yet but I’m still not worrying about that either. Still thinking about food of an evening time but like I said yesterday, that it just the mental barrier you have to get over. My throat is really sore today as well but I suppose with stopping smoking and doing a detox it is getting all the crap out of my body quicker so it is only to be expected. Have a slight headache today but no where near as bad as yesterday (and that wasn’t too bad) I was actually weighing myself throughout the day yesterday and everytime I did more would have come off which is a great to spur you on. All gong good so far people! I will keep you posted.

      4. Hey guys. Sorry I didn’t post yesterday. Had some problems with my internet. So day 4 started with me weighing myself and I was 10st 9lbs (149lbs) which was a bit disappointing as I had only lost 0.4 lbs from the day before. It was probably the first time I had been disheartened on this diet. However I persevered and today on day 5 I weigh 10st 7.2lbs (147.2lbs) So nearly 2 whole pounds lost since yesterday which has give me a little boost again. I have been experiencing a little pain in the lower left side of my back and left leg since the end of day 3 but that seems to be easing up a bit. It was just like an annoying dull ache. I am really not feeling hungry anymore when I wake up. I think yesterday I only had 3 or 4 of cups of the lemonade as I just didn’t feel hungry enough to have anymore. I also have the coating on my tongue that Stanley burroughs talks about in his book. For those of you who don’t have it, he says that you will get a whitish coating on your tongue and you know when you are completely detoxed as the coating will disappear. My tongue has had the coating on it since day 2 so something is definitely happening! Don’t worry, it’s not gross though, No one would even notice as you tongue just looks paler than normal.     2. Well everyone is different when losing … losing it in different spots. Mine never get much smaller than a DD or much bigger no matter how much I weigh but my buddy that does the MC about every year loses a lot of in her chest and gains it there too when she gains .

    3. women usually lose what they dont want 1st, you cant with any diet ir excerise determine where the should be taken off, wish we could though, cause thats the first for me, love handles and belly next. in vest in a padded, push-up if need b, the only way people dont lose in this section inf they have implants

  15. Hello all! I have started the MC as of this morning. I woke up in the morning and just decided to go for it. I have already had the lemonade and just did the SWF and everything went to plan as hoped. I’m a little worried about making it 10 days as I love food. I’m also a little concerned about packing on the pounds after I’m done with the cleanse as I’m sure it messes with metabolism.   16. I’m going to start tomorrow after I buy the lemons and maple syrup tonight. I’m doing this more because I keep trying to lose and I do well then set myself back then do well again and set myself back again. I overall want to lose 20 lbs. That’s good for me. Recently these last two weeks I’ve eaten junk so I just want to start fresh and I heard nothing but good reviews about this (except that its hard to follow). So I will be trying this and hopefully have good results. I’ll post back.

    1. I started today, drank the tea, did the SWF and drank 9 glasses or lemonade. Day 1 was not what I expected. I didn’t feel hunger pains, headaches and the smell of food didn’t tempt me. I just felt bloated from all the liquid! My concern is that everyone says “be ready” after the SWF, but it didn’t do anything for me. I’m kind of concerned about this. Has anyone had this happen before? Maybe I’m speaking too soon? I was just so gung-ho about experiencing the after-effect, because I {literally} just want all this crap outta me so I can feel a little better.   17. I’m on day 5 and feel great. Being in a working environment its quite hard to control your cravings when everyone is having their lunch time. I could smell food from other offices but had to stay focussed. Can anyone advice on the usage of contraceptives during the MC?

  18. Today is day one for me. Its about 9:30 AM. I just had a cup of Smooth Move tea. Just the thought of the salt water flush makes me gag, so I’m contemplating whether or not I will try that component. I may just try the tea morning and night. I haven’t made my lemondae drink yet for today, but I guess I need to get going on that as I am already feeling hungry. (Not a good sign!) I weighed myself and I weigh a ridiculous 258.4. Last night, I “stored” up in preparation for the cleanse by gorging. I know that was not the right thing to do, but it’s how I mentally psyched myself up to get going. I’ve been a little anxious about this whole thing. I love food. I look forward to eating. And not healthy foods….So this will be a real challenge for me. I am not going to use the cleanse as a diet plan. I just need a jump start. I think that once I experience some loss, I will be motivated to press on. I have read many testimonials of people who say that they, after cleansing, have the desire to eat healthier afterwards. I’ll keep my fingers crossed about that one. This may not be the best time to begin the cleanse as July 4 is approaching….Barbeque, potato salad, desserts….Sigh….But I’m going to try. I am going on vacation on July 17 and I want to lose some before that….Why? Because I anticipate there will be lots of pictures taken and I don’t want to look “swollen” in the pictures. LOL….That’s my truth. As crazy as it sounds…Ok…I’ll try to post daily as a means of sorting out my feelings and as a means of soliciting support from other people going on this journey.   19. Hey everybody, this is my first time ever doing any type of cleanse. Tomorrow I will be starting on the Master Cleanse. I am really excited about giving it a try so I can get my body back healthy like it should be. So, I am here for support and to keep you all updated on how it goes. I do have one question. Do I have to do the laxative tea and the salt water flush? thank you.

  20. I ordered my Master Cleanse stuff last week and can not wait to get it in. So as soon as it comes in I am going to start. Kinda nervous about the whole not working out part considering that is part of my job daily. So, hopefully it will not be too bad for me. My roommate and me are starting together so we can make sure each other do not cheat! Can not wait for the results to show. I am 20, 5’4 and 121…my friend did it last week and she lost 23 pounds hopefully, I will loose at least 15 pounds!
