Detoxification diets are specially-developed with the main purpose of sanitizing and cleansing the body by flushing out toxins and other synthetic chemicals. Detox diet plans are proven to have good beneficial effects on the over-all state of health of users. However, some scientific studies have revealed that detox diets can harm the body, especially to young people.
What are Detox Diets?
It is common knowledge that detox programs involve fasting. There are various versions of fasting: full, moderate, and maintenance. The full version requires complete absence of solid foods during the detoxification period. The moderate fasting allows only fresh fruits and vegetables with the detox diet. Lastly, the maintenance version set aside one day of full-version fasting every week-which is a diet of no-solid-all-liquid.
The general idea of eliminating waste materials from the body is very good. Who want to store toxins inside their bodies? Cleanliness, inside and out, is very much desired by users of detox diets; even though they have to suffer from several side effects during the cleansing period. Most people experience headaches, dizziness, vomiting, and fatigue. These are negative reactions shown by the body while getting detoxified. It is not surprising that body systems are shocked while massive amount of harmful substances passes through on their way out. Read the rest of this entry »

Margaret Tye has this interesting article about the value of Omega 3 fatty acids. I have written before about how I do take this supplement and my wife actually calls them heart pills because Omegas are supposed to be good for your heart and circulation.
In recent years research has highlighted the benefits of omega 3 fish oil, whether it is taken naturally by eating oily fish, or by taking daily supplements. Fish oil has been shown to help keep the cardiovascular system healthy, reducing the risk of heart disease and eventual heart attack.
Many people take fish oil to help joint movement. Arthritic patients can suffer a great deal of pain and omega 3 fatty acid may reduce wear and tear on the joints and reduce the pain of inflammation. You should always tell your doctor if you are taking fish oil supplements, particularly if you are on any prescribed medication.
In the UK, research showed dramatic improvements in reading skills in children given omega 3 over a period of three months. Both over and under-achievers were seen to improve. Sixteen year old students given omega 3 in the period before taking exams achieved better results than those not taking supplements. Read the rest of this entry »

acai berry (pronounced ah-sigh-ee) has been a real sensation this year with many new products on the market promising everything from weight loss, antivirus properties and even help for people with Leukemia. Earlier this year Oprah put the acai berry on the top of a list of superfoods and you know how things go when Oprah talks about them, the little Acai berry has not been safe since. To me the real story of the Acai Berry is that it is a fruit berry that has strong antioxidant abilities but lets see what we can find out about Acai Berry and your health.
What is the Acai Berry
The acai Berry fruit, a small, round, black-purple fruit is about 1 inch in diameter, kind of like a grape and grows on a very tall tree. Two crops of fruit are pare grown per year. The Acai berry fruit has a single large seed that takes up a lot of the berry. The skin of a ripe berry is a deep purple color, or green, depending on the kind of acai that it is.

Children from newborns to teens need double the previously recommended amount of vitamin D, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). New research points to growing evidence that the nutrient once called “sunshine vitamin” is needed in increased amounts to prevent serious diseases, in addition to strengthening bones.
The new recommendation of 400 units daily replaces a 2003 AAP recommendation of 200 units daily. To meet the new vitamin D recommendation, millions of children will need to take daily vitamin supplements. This includes breastfed infants and many children and teens. The new recommendations include:
- Breastfed and partially breastfed infants should be supplemented with 400 IU a day of vitamin D beginning in the first few days of life.
- All non-breastfed infants, as well as older children, who are consuming less than a quart per day of vitamin D-fortified formula or milk, should receive a vitamin D supplement of 400 IU a day.
- Adolescents who do not obtain 400 IU of vitamin D per day through foods should take a supplement containing that amount.
- Children with increased risk of vitamin D deficiency, such as those taking certain medications, may need higher doses of vitamin D.

I felt is was important to write a quick post about buying Hoodia because people often email me asking how they can trust online retailers and also are interested in the appetite suppression that Hoodia offers. Also if you are like me you probably get a couple of emails a day at least telling you how to buy Hoodia – I hate those spammers!
Hoodia Gordonii is one of the best tools for quick weight loss becasue of it’s ability to stop you from feeling hungry. However, the unfortunate thing is that most, if not all of the Hoodia products available in the market are fakes. It is very difficult to tell whether a particular product is fake or genuine, especially if you are new to Hoodia Gordonii.
There are some important as well as some obvious pointers that you can look for to make sure that you are buying genuine Hoodia. Read the rest of this entry »

People are always asking me whether they really need to supplement or not. My stock answer is always that you may or may not need it but if you are deficient in any vitamin or mineral than it will definitly aeefect your health so go ahead and take at least a multivitamin.
Once you have dipped into the supplementation game though there is a dark side of slanted studies, exagerations and lies in the marketplace.
I ran across a good page of introductory supplement information from the FDA which is great reading to learn more about how to understand dietary dupplements as well as what the FDA does to regulate them.

When you are starting to lose weight, it is inevitable that you will take the help of weight loss supplements to accelerate the process. Speaking of weight loss supplements, have you ever tried the natural supplement called Garcinia Cambogia? It is touted as being better than the fad diet pills, because unlike them, it is much more versatile.
For example, there are diet pills that would help in blocking carbs from getting converted into fat; but these pills won’t suppress your hunger. Then there are pills that would suppress your appetite but won’t help you block the carbs. However the Garcinia Cambogia will do both: it not only blocks the conversions of carbs into fat, but also helps you by suppressing your appetite. With its dual approach, you cannot help but lose weight!
Years of research has proved the fact that most people become obese as a result of eating more than their normal diet. And the reason behind overeating is often emotional. People eat to soothe their stressed nerves and calm their anxious minds. If you are suffering from stress and depression, it is inevitable that you will eat in order to soothe yourself! This is where Garcinia Cambogia can help you.
Garcinia Cambogia contains a substance called serotonin, a chemical which is already present in our brain and helps in soothing our frayed nerves. Garcinia Cambogia increases the level of the serotonin chemical to make sure that your anxious mind is calmed down so that you don’t overeat as a result of anxiety or stress. Most other fad diet pills won’t help you in this regard!
In order to get the optimum results from Garcinia Cambogia, it is important that you follow a diet that is low on carbs. You don’t need to eliminate carbs altogether from your diet; that is neither possible nor desirable. What you can do instead is eliminate foods that are rich in fast carbs, such as sugary products. Most of the fruit juices, cakes, etc., should be avoided if you want to lose weight with the help of Garcinia Cambogia.
In short, if you are serious about weight loss, there is no reason why you shouldn’t give Garcinia Cambogia a try. Garcinia Cambogia can help you with weight loss, especially if you gained weight as a result of emotional eating. By taking the anxiety out of your mind, it will soothe and calm you down so that you won’t feel the urge to eat whenever you are stressed out or depressed.
Also, if you have a large tummy then you have even more reason to use Garcinia Cambogia. Not only is tummy fat ugly for the eye, it is also indicative of the fact that your insulin levels are not enough to control the amount of sugar you are consuming; the reason why you are accumulating fat around your belly. If you don’t get rid of that belly fat quickly, you may soon contact diabetes!

What is the Dietrine carb blocker?
As you know I am a big proponent of using a good diet and exercise to lose weight. There is no such thing as taking a pill to lose weight and even if a pill did the job I am not sure that in the end it makes you any healthier than a classic couch potato.
Most of the time we can just exercise and have a good diet and will lose weight easily that way. Sometimes this does not work though. I get emails every week from people that seem to have trouble losing weight, if they just have two pieces of bread they seem to gain weight easily the next day. I have looked around for a long time for something that would help everyone with this problem.
I have just run across a type of diet supplement known as a carb blocker.
The Dietrine Carb Blocker works with your body’s own natural processes to prevent carbs from being stored as fat. The effective ingredient works by neutralizing the alpha amylase enzyme, effectively limiting the breakdown of carbohydrates into glucose and fat, meaning that your caloric intake can be dramatically decreased, even with carbohydrate-rich foods. I have mentioned on this blog many times that I take vitamins and that I recommend people to take vitamins. The problems is that vitamin and other pills are usually not a magic bullet to losing weight but people often treat them like they are. As we all should remember supplements are an addition not a core of our diet, health and fitness programs
Now I just ran into Lipovox. Lipovox is supposed to be some kind of wonder pill as it contains all sorts of superfoods that are great for you. The list of what is has includes Green Tea, DMAE,
Alpha Lipoic Acid, Cayenne Pepper, Wheatgrass Extract, Flaxseed Oil, Alfalfa, Salmon Oil, Soybean, Buckwheat, Lactobacillus Acidophillus, Garlic Extract.
We all know how good each of these things are for us, in fact all of the antioxoidants and Omega Vitamins in this seem like they would make for a fantastic supplement but I hate the idea.
Why would I hate a pill that has all the good things? Read the rest of this entry »

Caffeine is one of those drugs that we just tend to accept in society and there are reasons for it. Caffeine is in coffee and coffee is one of those popular drinks that people accept as social and not dangerous, a little jolt can help you at work and lots of research indicates that caffeine can improve concentration.
Thats Fit has an article about how the elderly can be helped in various ways using caffeine.
It turns out that drinking a caffeinated beverage raise blood pressure to what researchers referred to as a “healthy level” after someone has consumed a meal. This rise can counteract the temporary drop in blood pressure that typically occurs after a meal. This drop is most commonly known to occur in the elderly.
The researchers point to their findings that people who consumed four or more servings of caffeinated beverages daily had a 53 percent lower risk of death from heart disease than did those individuals who consumed less than half a serving a day. And, with respect to the people who only drank two or three servings of caffeinated beverages a day, they had a 32 percent lower risk than those who drank less than half a serving a day.
